Greg Heffley, the world-famous Wimpy Kid, has been the hero and narrator of 13 books. But just how reliable a chronicler of his own life is he, really? We may find out, now that it’s Rowley Jefferson’s turn to tell the story. He’s Greg’s best friend, and so we know him quite well already, but this time we’ll be seeing things from his point of view!
Greg has told Rowley to write his biography (because, of course, Greg will be rich and famous one day, and his own autobiography won’t be enough). Rowley, being the guileless kid that his is, will almost certainly be frank with the reader and portray Greg’s life just as he sees it. Because he finds his own life and family more interesting than Greg’s, and because that’s what he knows more about, it looks like will get more about Rowley’s own life than about Greg, but that’s fine (Greg has had plenty of time in the spotlight!). We can also expect that as a biography it will be a funny mess, and not at all what Greg was hoping for, but as a window into Rowley’s life and point of view, it promises to be a great addition to the Wimpy Kid world.
Rowley and Greg are very different kids. Rowley is much nicer (many readers actually like him better), and he doesn’t care about being popular and growing up in the same way Greg does. Rowley and Greg have had their share of ups and downs, and though this new book won’t be visiting those past unpleasant events directly, it sure will be interesting to get a look inside Rowley’s side of things!
What will we learn about Rowley that we didn’t already know? What will we learn about Greg, and their past adventures, now that we’re seeing him from the outside? Will those of us who wonder why Rowley puts up with Greg finally understand? And with Rowley drawing the pictures (over 300 of them!), how different will everyone look?
And, more importantly, with Rowley, a fundamentally kind person, as the narrator, will the wicked humor that made Greg’s diary so fun still be there? Almost certainly, but I can’t wait for the new twist on the familiar world of the Wimpy Kid!
