Sanibel's most unlikely private detective has decided to call it a day. Battered by hurricanes, their Captiva home in ruins, Tree and his wife Freddie are moving to Chicago.

Just before he leaves, Tree gets a call from his former wife, Judy Markov. Known as the American Oligarch, thanks to the business she inherited from her late Russian husband, Judy demands a favor of Tree.
