Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite A Raccoon’s Tale: Seven Saves the Notch is a preteen and young adult animal adventure book written by Fran Hodgkins and illustrated by Donachada Daly. Seven-Rings had always lived in the abandoned church with her mother, Runner Moon, brother, Typhoo, and little sister, Arnica, until the day the giant yellow machine came and began to rip apart the Ladies’ Group parlor where their nest was located. Runner Moon had always been a bit concerned about her smallest and last-born kit, Arnica, who wasn’t quite as strong and playful as her siblings, and when the walls began crashing down around them, she charged Seven with getting Arnica and herself to safety. As they rushed down the stairs, a friendly rat from the basement told Seven about an older raccoon who lived nearby. His name was Greyson, and he actually happened to be Seven and Arnica’s grandfather. Greyson told Seven the legend about the raccoon with seven rings who would save the Notch, the heart of the forest, and who would be born when there was a copper moon. Seven knew she was born during a copper moon and had seven rings on her tail, but she’d never even heard of the Notch before and she certainly didn’t see herself as a legendary hero. Fran Hodgkins’ preteen animal adventure book, A Raccoon’s Tale: Seven Saves the Notch, should delight nature and animal lovers of all ages. I know that I was transfixed by this action-packed and highly entertaining story from the moment I began reading it to the very last sentence. The author’s main character, Seven, is clever, loyal and resourceful, and the canny reader will soon come to understand that this is more than just an animal fantasy. It’s a coming of age tale complete with challenges, obstacles and a most important quest, combined with a credible and environmentally conscious look at the incursions of mankind on the few remaining wild and natural places. There’s also a marvelous animal mythology that the author weaves throughout this well-written and highly accessible tale. I had a grand time following Seven and her companions in their efforts to save the Notch. A Raccoon’s Tale is most highly recommended.
This is a great story about a smart raccoon who goes on an adventure to save her forest...and her friends along the way. Seven Rings Moon is a character your kids will love. She is intelligent, brave, and responsible. She is a great role model. The story also brought up issues around deforestation and the destruction of forests. Its short chapters and creative illustrations also helped to encourage them to keep reading. My children loved this book and could not put it down. This is a must buy.
