Absolution by Kaylea Cross

A lifetime of regret...

After legendary CIA contractor Luke Hutchinson unknowingly trained the man who would become the world's most dangerous terrorist, he has no choice but to hunt him across the globe. Driven to complete that final mission, he fears his enemy has targeted the only woman Luke has ever loved. Unfortunately for him she's his ex-wife, and already facing another deadly threat he can't protect her from.

A lifetime of pain...

Emily always hoped Luke would find his way back to her, but she's finally given up on that impossible dream. Now that she's fighting her own life and death battle, the last thing she wants is to get entangled with the man who ripped out her heart and left her to raise their son on her own.

One final chance at absolution...

Undeniable sparks fly when they're forced to share a roof, but unless Luke can get Emily to trust him, they won't get the second chance they've waited over two decades for. And time is running out. The monster Luke created is on the move again, bent on destroying him and anyone who gets in the way.

This is a hard review to write because of the sad and romantic struggle of Luke and Emily. I found much of the plot just plain stupid. What kind of idiot would even consider taking a woman with stage III cancer to the Middle East because it would be safer than staying in the states. Also, what 50 year old man is still a CIA field operative. Giving it three stars was generous.

Perfect ending to a great series! This end to the incredible series is quite the emotional read. Happy, sad and everything in between! In this book, all of the heroes and heroines from the previous books are together (more or less, except Rayne and Christa). Luke is on his final mission to find Tehrazzi and take him out. They set up base at Bryn’s father’s place in Beirut and because Luke realizes Tehrazzi has been targeting the females of his team he feels the last one that is in danger is his ex-wife Emily. He learns that Emily is battling cancer and in order to keep her safe from Tehrazzi while she undergoes treatment (while Nev oversees that treatment), he asks her to stay at the compound with the other women. I liked many things about this story. While Rhys and Nev’s story is probably my favorite with regards to the action, etc, I think this one is my favorite for the emotional pulls. After 20 years apart, Luke and Emily find each other again. I liked that the hero/heroine were older (50ish) and brought a different type of relationship to the series. They had an unbelievable amount of respect for each other even though they had not been married for several years (although Emily made a comment about not signing divorce papers, so…). I felt that their story of finding each other again was very real since it involved so many raw emotions from both of them. Kaylea did a great job with the love scenes, too! I really enjoyed watching all of the characters in the book interact together. Surprisingly, while Tehrazzi frustrated me in the previous books, I actually enjoyed his POV’s more in this one. I thought Kaylea did a great job on how things ended between Tehrazzi and Luke, as it was quite the build for the past several books, and I was wondering how that would happen. I thought she pulled all the relationships together nicely and I could not have asked for a better ending to the series. I highly recommend this whole series. Kaylea did a wonderful job with them, considering she had the same storyline through the entire thing (rather than the same characters with different problems each book). She really keeps you engaged in all the books so you love the characters and you feel like you are fighting along with them until the end.
