Against The Odds (Anna Dawson Book 1) by Mara Jacobs

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Mara Jacobs comes Book 1 in the Anna Dawson mystery series.

My name is Anna Dawson, and I'm a gambler.

And like any gambler will tell you, sometimes that's good, and sometimes...not so much. And sometimes it's an outright problem.

I love Vegas, and I love the life I've built, but when one of my friends is murdered, and another one shot at, I know I need to take a serious look at myself. And I need to call in the big guns. Even if that means teaming up with Detective Jack Schiller, a man battling his own demons.

Right now I'm just trying to juggle protecting my friends, helping Jack while not letting him get too close, and finding a murderer. And oh yeah, no one can learn about my gambling.

Or this will be the last hand I'm dealt.

*NOTE: The case is solved, the perpetrator caught, but there are a few threads that are continuing on through the next book and the series.

Books in the Anna Dawson series thus far:
1 - Against The Odds
2 - Against The Spread
3 – Against The Rules

The gambling aspect makes for a different setting than the same old, same old. The characters are genuine. I can't wait to start the second book.

On choosing this book and won ! Learned enough to be intrigued and to avoid becoming Jo-Jo, ! Different theme with lessons but, decidedly, not preachy. Old people coping with age in unique way was an interesting aspect. Hated to have it end.

I've lived in Vegas for 40 years. Worked in casinos for 39. This is one of the few books that gets it right about the people and the small town that it really is. Hard for me to believe the author didn't live like her character does. In a town like Vegas, few people ever get the inside right. She comes as close as anyone I've ever read. Will follow her books again.

Not a badly written book. The plot kept me intrigued, and I liked the insight into the mind and heart of a true addict (gambling vs. alcohol). If you enjoy reading about the underbelly of Vegas culture and are interested in people being beaten to settle gambling debts, then this will suit you nicely. It just was not quite my cup of tea because gambling and the coarse culture it seethes with are not a match for my tastes. It is certainly not the coarsest book one could pick up, but it is coarser than my tastes. I won't look for others by this author. She does know how to spin a tale, however. She kept me guessing and wrapped up the plot with a satisfying ending.
