Kat Martin's stories have entertained me for years and I thoroughly enjoy romantic suspense. This wasn't my favorite. The editing was not the best. There were grammatical errors - you're instead of your -twice. Amelia as a psychiatrist would have been an M.D., not a Ph.D, although psychiatrists can be Ph.D's as well as medical doctors. Psychologists are Ph.D's. Dylan did not make an effort to spend time with his daughter...even for a short team each day. There was no sitting on Daddy's lap, reading books, no watching movies with popcorn in the evening. This seemed off to me. There didn't seem to be much effort by the author to allow Dylan and Emily to forge a tentative bond, or to work toward mending the strained father-daughter relationship. When Lane heard things in the hall, it was odd that Finn didn't get up and act interested or curious in what she was doing or where she was going. Those points seemed like gaps to me. All the dogs that I have owned would have barked, growled or at least investigated with nose down and ears pricked. I enjoyed the appealing male characters, including Caleb and Nick as well as the feminine, talented and intelligent Lane. This novel didn't match prior well crafted stories that I am used to by this great author.

Dylan Brodie knew Lane Bishop was trouble for him in every way shape and delectable inch of her but it did not stop him from hiring her as his interior designer.  Not for one second did  Dylan question that Lane that the talent to take his lodge in Alaska and make it a show place for every one looking for relaxation and adventure.  Dylan was starting a new life for him and his  daughter and knew he could do it all in this one breath taking area of Alaska. Lane also knew better than to get involved with Dylan because he was a man with too many secrets, but she had been attracted to him from the minute they met.  Lane is good at what she does and the challenge of a large design job to show case her talent as well as being close to Dylan was too great a thrill to pass up.  What Lane did not see coming was a historical past connected to the lodge  that has some creepy sounds mixed in with a ghost story or two surrounding an otherwise quiet existence.   Dylan will figure out the ghost that is haunting them as he smells a set up from the get go. Supernatural existence this does not add up to be, but something a person would take on, why is the bigger question.   Dylan has to keep the schedule on time to finish, gossip about problems to a minimum, and hopefully work with everyone including Lane very closely to get the lodge up and running.   Question looming between them is this a short term romance or can Lane be strong enough to deal  with him, his life, and the place he calls home.  Dylan has been loved and deserted before leaving a mess in its wake but trying to control his feelings for Lane is harder than he ever expected.   Dylan knows there is chemistry between them and his fixation is something he cannot control and there may be another that is equally fixated with Lane and obsessed with having her at any cost. Kat Martin is an author with a talent take each book up a notch in romantic suspense and have every reader anxiously waiting for the next book to be released.

Great story, with right amount of mystery to keep you glued to it. On to another awesome story, with Nick.

The story is well written and you could feel the suspense. At one point I wanted to smack the hero and heroine for being so stubborn. Thankfully they get their heads on straight and admit their feelings.

I thought I had outgrown romance novels, but found myself drawn into this one with it's predictable mystry / thriller sideline. The characters are good people who you would want as your friends. Perhaps it was the Alaska background that really drew me in since we will be leaving with that destination in 3 days. I do hope we see all this beauty as described in the story.

Rough, tough, and handsome are three ingredients for a great hero, and Dylan Brodie is such a man, and a chivalrous one at that. I enjoyed getting to know the first of the Brodie brothers in this new series. I loved the Alaska setting, and of course the nicely spun suspense and murder. The author did a nice job delivering in both the action and excitement departments. Lane is a fitting match for Dylan, and her gradual acceptance of him and Alaska felt natural. The romance was more sex than romance in the first 3/4 of the book. Those can sometimes go hand in hand, but in this case, it was just sex. I didn't feel the thrill of their relationship until the end of the book, but I'm glad it ended on a more romantic note. I personally didn't think the abundance of sex added anything to the story, but if you're like me, you skip over it and move onto the good stuff. There was plenty of good stuff to enjoy in 'Against the Wild' and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good romantic suspense set in the wilds of Alaska. One of my favorite characters ended up being Nick, Dylan's brother. Another tough and handsome guy who will no doubt delight readers when he get's his own story.

Which turn "cozy" readers off. Subjects would be alaska lodge romance paranormal mystery. how regional one needs to go depends on how accurate your basic info is tourist wise. Just remember that grizzley bears eat people and do not scare off like black bears who might

This is the first book in the Brodies of Alaska series and I loved it. I am a huge fan of Kat Martin and all that she writes. The characters in this story were well developed and interesting. The story was full of mystery and intrigue and just a hint of the paranormal in the form of ghosts. The romance was also well developed and written. A definite must read.

J: Just too darn much hot steamy "romance" so much that it distracted from the suspense of the story. The story itself could have been good enough and did not need redundant sex. However this entire series reads like a pattern and it was painfully predictable.

3.5 Stars While Against the Wind was a very good read, it wasn’t what I expected. Dylan Brodie is the middle Brodie boy.  He grew up in Alaska and has recently purchased a lodge in the Alaskan pan handle.  He has the help of the locals to renovate it, but the inside he is saving for a special woman, Lane Bishop.  He now has his chance to revisit their attraction and he has the perfect lure to get her to Alaska. Lane Bishop has been attracted to Dylan since the moment she met him.  She tried and tried to ignore his advances, but he has offered her a change that she can’t pass up.  So off to Alaska she goes.  Lane’s visit is full of surprises and goes beyond her highest expectations.  She discovers her passion again after her loss of both her mother and fiancé and finally finds a home.  It’s too bad that everywhere they turn they are being bombarded by continual obstacles.  Can they conquer them all; even their biggest one - their doubts and fears of how their pasts will affect their future? So what did I expect?  Well a story that was truly a standalone novel for one.  Yes, the story is basically a standalone, but there are too many references that seem to be from prior novels and a different series.  I found the constant referencing too distracting.  My mind would wonder to what story it was, who it was about and so on.  Against the Wind is book one in the Brodies of Alaska series and that is exactly what it should have been, book one.  A reference or two is fine; the number in the novel was not.  I’m also sad to say, short of a very extensive search I have no idea what book Dylan and Lane first met in.  Very frustrating. Besides that problem, the story was very nice.  The story had mystery, romance and some suspense thrown in.  I will say Ms. Martin surprised me several times with the direction of the story.  I really loved that she kept me on my toes.  Her characters were also very entertaining.  I can say short of the characters I was supposed to hate, I adored every single one of them.  Ms. Martin made them very personable and I wanted to get to know and love them all.  Great job! Even though this book was packed with mystery, romance and suspense it still felt like a light read.  The atmosphere never became too deep and dark, making it perfect for a summer read.  She also wrote a plot that was interesting and fun and I could almost feel like I was back in Alaska.  Thank you Ms. Martin.  You reminded me how beautiful the state is and how wonderful the people are.  I truly miss it more after reading Against the Wild.

Lane was an interior design and came to Alaska. Brodie had offered her the job to help him remodel and old fishing lodge. She also find a little girl who won't speak, eerie legends and strange sounds in the night. Very good.
