Frederick Douglass wrote this narrative himself. He was born into slavery circa 1818, but escaped in his 20's. In the early 1840's the antislavery movement gained momentum. In 1841 Douglass attended an abolitionist movement and was hired as an abolitionist speaker for the American Anti Slavery Society.
