About the Author

Ibrahim al-Koni was born in Libya in 1948. A Tuareg who writes in Arabic, he spent his childhood in the desert and learned to read and write Arabic when he was twelve. He is the author of many novels, including Gold Dust, The Puppet, and The Seven Veils of Seth (AUC Press, 2008, 2009, 2010). He was awarded the Sheikh Zayed Prize for Literature in 2008.

William M. Hutchins, professor in the philosophy and religion department at Appalachian State University, is the principal translator of Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy, and the translator of numerous other works of Arabic fiction. He was awarded the 2013 Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation for his translation of A Land without Jasmine by Wajdi al-Ahdal.
