Overview

"They'd killed me, but I survived."

Three years after Rory Riordan foiled her own murder, she still trusts no one. Not Dr. Z, the eccentric college professor who has taken her under his wing, not Benji, the endearing, attractive classmate who insists on following her around, and certainly not Cy, the beautifully dark and mysterious boy who sits on the first row in Dr. Z's Astrobiology class and asks far too many questions.

When Rory witnesses Cy being abducted by soldiers in the middle of the night, she finds herself submersed in a world that holds even more secrets than she could imagine--even darker secrets than her own.

If this is your first book by this author STOP RIGHT NOW! This is not her best work. I had a hard time getting into this one. Probably about 3/4 of the way through it finally got to where i didnt want to put it down.  She has others that are better in my opinion. I normally LOVE LOVE LOVE everything she does. It was just this one that didn't capture me right away.

Can we have a 10 star rating, please? OMG this was so epic! It is truly a talent to write romance with such an amazing sci-fi story. This gripped me from the first sentence & kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It was like a brilliantly sneaky roller coaster that took me through tunnels and over crazy twists & turns. Amazing!! The ending...oh the ending. Jamie, you had me there for a minute, all ugly-crying and then...bam! You brought me right back to smileville. Genius!! This book could very well rival Red Hill for the top spot.

I haven't read a new adult paranormal story in a while.  In any event, I will now hold them to the standards that have been set by Apolonia.  Paranormal romances are a dime a dozen, but well written ones are far and few in between. Knowing Jamie McGuire has some serious storytelling skills, my doubts about Apolonia were minimal, but was I still skeptical.  I shouldn't have been. The story is fast paced and grabbed me from the first page.  Rory is a fantastic narrator.  She's honest about what's going on in her head and what she's thinking.  You know her motivations for everything and how she views everyone as well.  I both loved her and feared for her.  She's already been so through so much and all of a sudden she's got all this drama/action going on in her life. I so wanted everything to be better for her.   Jamie did a wonderful job with keeping the story flowing at a fast and furious pace.  There was never a lull in the story.  In fact, I kept wondering what was going to happen next.  I loved all the action and suspense as much as the romance.  For the longest part of the book I had no idea who Rory was romantically inclined for.  It was like a triangle, but it wasn't and then it got more complicated with the arrival of another female.  All of the twists were surprises, some more than others. I really felt like I was on this intense journey I couldn't stop watching but didn't want to because I was afraid for everyone involved.  I guess because my emotions were engaged, I had no choice but to keep reading even when my heart was pounding loudly in my chest.  There are some light moments and some really heavy ones, but each one is integral to the story.   If you're a sci-fi/paranormal skeptic, I would highly recommend you read this book.  It'll help alleviate your fears and will entertain you as much as it did me. I can't help but wish it was longer and from other points of view as well.  I would have loved to know what was going on in Apolonia's head, or even Benji and Cyrus's for that matter.  Hopefully Jamie will continue to write in this world. I'm not ready to let go of any of them yet.  I'm always excited about Jamie's books and once again this has reinforced the fact her mind is amazing.  I'm already looking forward to her next book.

I really enjoyed the story and the main character Rory. I enjoyed the developing of her relationships with Benji and with Cy. Each one started off as a friendship. One a little more weird and awkward in the beginning but it made it interesting. I liked Rory with Benji and I was intrigued by Cy and why they were drawn to each other. I was also very curious about Cy and couldn't figure out who he was but knew there was something more to him. I am usually a romance novel reader and this was the first Sci-Fi novel. I especially loved the beginning and the end and I would definitely recommend it if you enjoy Sci-Fi. I am happy that Jamie went outside of her own comfort zone to write this. I absolutely believe you should follow your dreams and explore them no matter where they take you. As always I can't wait to see where Jamie's imagination takes us next.

Bartender Rating: House/Well This and more reviews at The Book Bar.co I love McGuire's SciFi, Red Hill, and was excited to read Apolonia. The pace was fast and intriguing. The main character is mysterious, but her standoffish demeanor only begs for more attention. You forget that it's categorized as science fiction/paranormal until it smacks you in the face. Aliens, Xena, fringe departments of the CIA I could handle, but nothing was worse than wet clothes. McGuire, Jamie (2014-10-06). Apolonia (Kindle Locations 2251-2252). Jamie McGuire LLC. Kindle Edition. I was immediately sucked in to Rory's life. I wanted to know why she was such a [female dog] to everyone and why she kept referring to herself as being killed and living a new life. I questioned whether she was human and why her family was killed, but she was still alive to mourn their loss every day. She finds solace in the day to day school ritual and working for her professor. I turned my head and stared into his beautiful golden eyes. He always had a calming effect on me, even when I hated him. He was dirty, covered in grease, soot, and blood, but he was still beautiful. Like my mother just before she died. McGuire, Jamie (2014-10-06). Apolonia (Kindle Locations 2570-2572). Jamie McGuire LLC. Kindle Edition. Then the men in her life take her out of her norm and she starts questioning herself and their motives. She was tough as nails, but these guys make her more lovable. You start falling for the romance and want Rory happy with someone. “It’s okay, you know, if you like him. You don’t have to worry about me.” My eyes met Benji’s. He looked wounded. “I never asked you to like me.” He shook his head. “No , I know. I just… I will always be your friend. It doesn’t matter if you reciprocate those feelings or not. I don’t need you to love me to love you.” McGuire, Jamie (2014-10-06). Apolonia (Kindle Locations 816-819). Jamie McGuire LLC. Kindle Edition. You start to feel like you're reading a mysterious love triangle when the sci-fi spins you around and takes you for a crazy ride. Let go of your typical romance read, this is going to come from outer-space. I feel like this may have lost typical McGuire fans, but it's fun and so creative. Enjoy the change and develop a connection with the unthinkable. “Love is the most overused word in the English language. It’s confusing to everyone. Some people live their whole lives and never get it right.” McGuire, Jamie (2014-10-06). Apolonia (Kindle Locations 2963-2964). Jamie McGuire LLC. Kindle Edition. The writing is still McGuire, even though the genre is different. The words paint beautiful images in your mind and you feel the rush of adrenaline as the characters race to the ending. Take a chance on this paranormal/sci-fi and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Jamie McGuire is an amazing author. Sometimes she goes out of her box and writes something completely different. If you're a fan of her work as I am, you will love this book. I give it 4 stars but only bc it is not the type of book I generally Iike to read but it was still good, I mean... Jamie McGuire wrote it. Of course it's good. :)

I purchased this ebook since it was a daily deal, and I am glad I didn't spend much on it. I think the plot had some promise at the beginning of the book, but lost credibility quickly. The lead character's reasoning didn't make sense and I became constantly irritated with inconsistencies. As a whole, the book felt amateurish and cobbled together, with lack of logic needed to make the story end how the author wanted. (I quit reading and jumped to the end in a few places to see how it did finish...with an eye roll in my case).

To preface this review I need to say a few things... I claim to not like Sci-fi, Zombie, paranormal, or apocalyptic books.  BUT... When I started reading like a maniac again a few years ago a friend suggested I read the Hunger Games, which I devoured like a big chocolate cake.  Then another friend suggested I read Karen Moning's Fever Series, which was an amazing series too.  Not sure if you all have read those but they surely fit into the paranormal and Science fiction genre...so I guess I do like them! So, when the opportunity came about for me to read Apolonia, I jumped at the chance. Firstly, because I am a HUGE Jamie McGuire fan and I have also been thinking about trying to read something different than the "normal" YA and NA that I read.  I am so glad I tried it and well, I really enjoyed it. This story begins with us meeting Rory.  "They killed me, but I survived." Rory is such a strong girl.  She believes she is damaged but has put on a brave face, so she can go on with her life after tragically losing her family and best friend.   The wall she has put up has kept her from connecting with others. No connection means no loss. She has only one relationship, and that is with Dr Z.  Dr. Z was a family friend.  She is his research assistant and spends most of her time with him or alone.  At freshman orientation she meets Benji.  Rory wouldn't be defined as a friendly person, but Benji makes a point to keep tabs on her.  He often makes conversation with her and Rory is unsure of why he would do that.  "Why me"? she often asks herself.   She begins to let her defenses down and begins a friendship with him.  We watch the friendship turn into something more.  Rory is also introduced to Cy, Dr. Z's other research assistant.  He is a new student from Egypt and Rory is drawn to him, like an unexplainable force field that makes her want to be near him and get to know him.  It's different than her relationship with Benji, but all the same, she needs to know more about him, which is so unlike her. As in all of her books, Jamie's writing is impeccable  She has you understanding some very specific and intricate details of Dr. Z's studies. (That's where you begin to learn about the sci-fi aspect of this book).  It could have become monotonous but Jamie didn't get technical enough that she lost me.  I kept reading and reading wanting to know what exactly is going on.  To say there was a love triangle in this book might be pushing it.  There is a "relationship triangle".  The pull that Rory has to Benji is one thing then there is the relationship pull to Cy.  At certain points in the book I was routing for Benji and other time I was hoping she would go to Cy.  Who she became and how she felt with Benji made me smile... "Is what I am feeling a...good mood?  Do I even remember what that feels like?  Whatever it was I was completely find with me if it stuck around a while.." The twists and turns in this book will keep you turning the pages to find out the who, the what, the how and the when answers to questions Jamie has put throughout the book. The romance that was happening throughout this book was a nice addition to the story.  And we all know Jamie knows her romance!!  This was a nice edition to the story line for a romance addict like myself.  This book would be a great introduction to sci-fi for the hard core romance novel readers out there.

Maybe my expectations were to high but I thought it was...okay. it wasnt bad. It was a quick easy read. I love Benji. I didnt see why Rory was so connected to Cy and held so much affection for him. He was likable at points but I felt like I missed something for them to be so close.

I just could not get into this book. I tried, really I did because I love Jamie McGuire but this was not her best work. I had to force myself to finish.

I feel bad saying this bc i enjoyed the other books this author has written. This was really not that good. It was totally not believable, was confusing at times and the title made no sense at all. Im kinda pissed I had to pay $5. For it. This is not even remotely in the same league as the providence series or the disaster series.
