What People are Saying About This
“THE ARTIST’S WAY by Julia Cameron is not exclusively about writing—it is about discovering and developing the artist within whether a painter, poet, screenwriter or musician—but it is a lot about writing. If you have always wanted to pursue a creative dream, have always wanted to play and create with words or paints, this book will gently get you started and help you learn all kinds of paying-attention techniques; and that, after all, is what being an artist is all about. It’s about learning to pay attention.”
Anne Lamott, Mademoiselle
“The premise of the book is that creativity and spirituality are the same thing, they come from the same place. And we were created to use this life to express our individuality, and that over the course of a lifetime that gets beaten out of us. [THE ARTIST’S WAY] helped me put aside my fear and not worry about whether the record would be commercial.”
Grammy award-winning singer Kathy Mattea
“Julia Cameron brings creativity and spirituality together with the same kind of step-by-step wisdom that Edgar Cayce encouraged. The result is spiritual creativity as a consistent and nourishing part of daily life.”
“I never knew I was a visual artist until I read Julia Cameron’s THE ARTIST’S WAY.”
Jannene Behl in Artist’s Magazine
“Julia Cameron’s landmark book THE ARTIST’S WAY helped me figure out who I really was as an adult, not so much as an artist but as a person. And award-winning journalist and poet, Cameron’s genius is that she doesn’t tell readers what they should do to achieve or who they should be—instead she creates a map for readers to start exploring these questions themselves.”
Michael F. Melcher, Law Practice magazine
“This is not a self-help book in the normative sense. It is simply a powerful book that can challenge one to move into an entirely different state of personal expression and growth.”
Nick Maddox, Deland Beacon
“THE ARTIST’S WAY (with its companion volume THE ARTIST’S WAY MORNING PAGES JOURNAL) becomes a friend over time, not just a journal. Like a journal, it provokes spontaneous insights and solutions; beyond journaling, it establishes a process that is interactive and dynamic.”
Theresa L. Crenshaw, M.D., San Diego Union-Tribune
“If you really want to supercharge your writing, I recommend that you get a copy of Julia Cameron’s book THE ARTIST’S WAY. I’m not a big fan of self-help books, but this book has changed my life for the better and restored my previously lagging creativity.”
Jeffrey Bairstow, Laser Focus World
“Working with the principle that creative expression is the natural direction of life, Cameron developed a three month program to recover creativity. THE ARTIST’S WAY shows how to tap into the higher power that connects human creativity and the creative energies of the universe.”
Mike Gossie, Scottsdale Tribune
“THE ARTIST’S WAY is the seminal book on the subject of creativity and an invaluable guide to living the artistic life. Still as vital today—or perhaps even more so—than it was when it was first published in 1992, it is a provocative and inspiring work. Updated and expanded, it reframes THE ARTIST’S WAY for a new century.”
Branches of Light
“THE ARTIST’S WAY has sold over 3 million copies since its publication in 1992. Cameron still teaches it because there is sustained demand for its thoughtful, spiritual approach to unblocking and nurturing creativity. It is, dare we say, timeless.”
Nancy Colasurdo, FOXBusiness
Praise for VEIN OF GOLD, the second volume in the ARTIST’S WAY trilogy
“For those seeking the wellspring of creativity, this book, like its predecessor, is a solid gold diving rod.”
Most Helpful Customer Reviews
I was given the Artist Way Book by my boyfriend. And as I read it I felt connected to the book, one day I stumbled with this workbook and I bought it, it was less than 20 bucks (good price). So I bought it, and honestly it changed my life. I know it sounds weird that a book can be so powerful, but this workbook is (to me more so than the actual book) it helps you get to know yourself and it is like having a coach there everyday helping you baby step by baby step. Besides what do you have to lose? Its only 20 bucks and if you don't like it, just return it. You really have nothing to lose. This book will impact you if you do exactly what it says. I would choose this workbook over the book, the book has the same exercises but not as detailed, she mainly talk about experiences and people she has met and stories (in the book) the workbook to me is straight to the point and focus on you only.
I have read many books dealing with writing. I have had a story going on in my head for a few years now; but couldn't get it on paper. Every attempt I made went into the shredder, and I never got past the first page and it never got past the shredder. Sometimes I would look at it and rewrite the first sentence over and over. I started reading Julia Cameron - not sure if it was the workbook or one of the others. After three weeks I have over 50 pages and 4 or 5 chapters. It was as if she had more faith in me than I had in myself. I now have permission to write a bad book. I doubt my story will ever be published - but it is wonderful to see my characters get born and have them move from my head to the paper.
The workbook is well worth it, not only are there extras in it but it really helps you stretch those exercises to the max to get the most.
The workbook is nice and big with room to write and supports the key points covered by the book. Experts say you need to do things in sets of three to really learn. I read the book, re-read tips in the workbook and then physically perform the exercise. Love the check-ins at the end of each week. The workbook provides that extra nudge to stay on track.
The best journey toward your artistic life!
This book is very easy to read, challenging and life-changing! It forced me to get out of my head, to love myself, and begin to be what my creater created me to be. I am just beginning, but I have learned to fly and the sky's the limit!!!
This book is probably one of the most inspirational books I've read in a long time. IIt doesn't matter if you are looking to improve your writing skills or your painting skills, Julia will teach you how to discipline yourself to do what you really want to do with your time and learn to by-pass the crazymakers in your life, those who love to distract you from fulfilling your dreams. She provides a step-by-step process for recovering your old enthusiasm toward pursuing goals you may have swept under the rug years ago for any number of reasons. You may think you're too busy to write that novel, or your workload prohibits you from doing the artwork that you've always imagined doing. With her affirmation statements, she gives the reader's brain the wake-up call it has been needing--only in small doses, chapter by chapter. I love the way she links spirituality to creativity.I can guarantee that it won't take 10 days before you too will see the coincidences that occur simply because you will have trained yourself to be open to what the Creator is doing in your world. I would suggest buying all three books: The Artist's Way: Morning Pages Journal, Artist's Way Workbook, and the main text, The Artist's Way. If you are ready for a life-changing experience, these books can kick-start that drive to teach you how to dig up old dreams you thought had died and make them into realities. When I teach a college writing class again, Julia's book will be mandatory for help direct my students into realizing their true potential. Her philosophy is quite simply stated: no more excuses. Some evaluators possibly lacked the maturity to follow her guidelines and her daily expectations. This 12-week program to reclaiming your creative self is demanding, but the rewards are unbelievable. Cameron's books teach time management skills and accountability. She basically says, "There's no one to blame but yourself." We all know there are so many people who are not ready for that kind of honesty. Yes, she is a demanding taskmaster, but your time and energy are the tickets to buy your way into a happier and more productive life . I only wish I'd discovered all of Julia Cameron's book much earlier in my life.
I've never actually bought or read The Artist's Way....But this workbook really helps me to focus, even though many of the ideas are not new or original.
