Overview

About the Author

Jessica Peers was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at 12 years old and spent the rest of her education in a residential school for young people with autism. After achieving an M.A. in English Literature, she is now a voluntary researcher at the Autism Research Unit (University of Sunderland) and writes in her spare time.

Gr 6-9-A bizarre, somewhat autobiographical novel, about Jessica, 12, who has been expelled from school and is entering a residential institution for autistic children. American readers will puzzle over the Briticisms that permeate the story; it is one thing to guess at a common noun but quite another to wonder what kind of products certain brand names signify. Treatment of the students at the school is violent, language brutal. There is nothing redeeming about the teachers, the staff, or the parents. The writing seems to spew forth as Jessica's understandable anger comes through loud and clear, but the book has little else to offer.
