Before That Night (Unfinished Love Series: Caine & Addison Duet, Book 1 of 2) by Violet Duke

-- A USA TODAY Bestseller --

Before that night, Addison Milan had been just a college dropout secretly raising her two young siblings in a beat-up minivan she'd bought with her first semester's tuition refund--the only money her addict mother hadn't taken off with when she'd abandoned them nearly two years ago.

Before that night, Caine Spencer had been just a rough, gruff cop sent to check out the phoned-in claims of suspected child neglect involving the same woman he'd met just months prior when she'd first served him the city's worst diner coffee...which he'd been drinking daily ever since.

Before that night, Addison would never have thought the man she'd been fighting hard not to fall for--her only friend in her new shadow of a life--would be in a position to rip her family apart.

Before that night, Caine would never have believed any woman could make him fall head over heels, let alone make him feel so damn compelled to look the other way when it came to his job.

Then that one perfect night changed everything.

"Hot, sweet, and filled with tender moments, Violet Duke writes heroes who make me swoon!"-- New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan

BEFORE THAT NIGHT (Bk 1 -- 208 pgs) chronicles the events that take place seven years prior to EVERY NIGHT WITHOUT YOU (Bk 2 -- 384 pgs), which is the conclusion of Caine & Addison's story of love, sacrifice, and the lengths one will run--and chase--when their past threatens their future.

NOTE: Each of the four couples in the Unfinished Love series have TWO books (duets) that take place years apart. Each duet is a two-part second chance romance, meaning each couple is separated after their first book and reunited in the second book of their duet. As noted in the title, this is Book ONE of TWO; the second book in this duet reunites this couple seven years later, and concludes their story.

Four brothers. Each fighting for their second first chance at love. Years be damned.

About the Author

New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Violet Duke is a former English Ed professor ecstatic to now be on the other side of the page writing emotion-rich stories with fun, everyday characters and sweet, sexy match-ups. Since her acclaimed debut series in 2013, over a million readers have put Violet's “laugh & cry” contemporary romances on the USA Today bestseller list thirteen times, the NYT bestseller list three times, and the Top 10 charts across the major eretailers both in the U.S. and internationally.

When she doesn't have her nose in a book, Violet enjoys the live-out-loud-in-your-PJs sorta lifestyle she loves writing about, which involves lots of: 1) excuses to use her power tools, 2) doing stuff without checking the directions, and 3) impossible-to-be-duplicated 'special edition' dishes that laugh in the face of recipes. Born and raised in Hawai'i, Violet continues to live the no-shoes island way with her kids (daughter Violet & son Duke) and husband (aka their ringleader...and her most devoted fan).

I really enjoyed reading this Addison is a very likeable character and i really respected her, same with Caine, he was just the right amount of sweet and protective that had me actively swooning at some points like hand to my heart kinda moments i loved it. The story also has a good amount of tension and even had my eyes watering at a couple points. Plus the kids werent annoying nor did the get in the way of anything. They were well developed characters of their own and even made Caine rack up those total sweetheart points even more. I really did like the story and the characters with only a few quips. Number one being the description of “alpha energy rolling off in waves” from Caine. It really takes you out of the actually very heartfelt story when you describe him as an alpha male. Like I care about Caine the character, I really do, not just Caine the typical alpha male. Second problem I had was trying to keep the language PG. Like, please you have her orgasming in one part and you’re still having the characters say fricker and freakin A? It wasnt even around the kids! It doesnt make any sense! (by the way dissatisfied by the lack of an actual sex scene when this is definitely not a PG book. They have one night together with zero description like thanks thats why I read this type of book, for the graphic make out sessions and smoldering looks BUT NO FURTHER GOD FORBID). **SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT** Finally, I thought the climax came too fast it couldve been padded a bit more and not have it be literally the next day, also they say show don’t say and that definitely goes for David, have him be present in the background a couple times instead of just throwing him in like oh him? Hes always been a creeper, why? Oh and her conclusion at the end was kinda dumb, shes gonna be connected to the case no matter what cause how else would Marco have gotten in that situation? They said themselves they couldnt act till he did something, so they have to put in a bit about his obsession for Addison and that would bring forth Davids call to the station etc so what she did makes no sense.

I do not know why this book got so many good reviews. It was not that good. The storyline could have been good, but it fell short because it was rushed. Things progressed too fast, making the story too fake and unbelievable. Also, the female character got annoying, I got sick of hearing how great she was. This book was actually quite boring, I had to skip pages just to finish it. It was torture reading every last, dull word. It did not hold my attention. I did not like the writers style of writing. I will delete this book as soon as possible. I do not recommend this book. Gtx

I was given an Advanced Review eBook Copy, by the author, in return for a honest review. This book, first in The Unfinished Love series, was such a well written read. The plot was realistic and moving, gripping. I fell in love with the characters. This novel really pulls at the heart! - Sarah

Before That Night is the first book in the Unfinished Love series. Violet is a new author to me and I am glad I got the opportunity to read her work. I don't want to give anything away so if the blurb catches your attention than grab a copy of Before That Night or since both books are out now, you should buy the set. Before That Night does end in a cliffhanger. This is just the beginning of Cain and Addison's story. You'll definitely be on an emotional rollercoaster ride.

Never have I read anything like Before That Night. There is no subterfuge the rawness of a life interrupted and the courageous actions of a woman at the brink of despair. Addison is a very meaty character. She leads this story like a mama bear protecting her cubs and faces unspeakable danger head on. Caine is her rock when her secrets and responsibilities become too much to bear. Caine is hardly a hero, he has his own demons to bear but for a while he becomes Addison's soft place to fall. Before That Night provides a glimpse at subjects like homelessness, alcoholism and obsession while delivering an organic story of love and hope. My one pet peeve is that I didn't get my happy ending.

This is adorable but a little sad, I can't wait for book 2 to see how perfect Violet Duke is going to make the ending to their story!

I read this book in one sitting! The only disappointing thing about this book is, is that it ended. Luckily the conclusion comes in just a few short weeks. Caine and Addison are a couple with so much possibility. Addison is scared and has a tremendous amount of responsibility raising her much younger brother and sister. She'll do anything for her siblings to keep them safe and together, even giving up Caine if need be. Violet Duke has another super great read with this one. Don't miss out on reading a great book!

Part of a good love story is when good things happen to those who deserve the bittersweet ending of Addison and Caine's story will have me watching for the release of the REAL ending in Every Night Without You.

Violet Duke is amazing. I can't wait for book two and see where this story goes. It does have a cliffhanger but Her writing is so amazing that even if there wasn't you would crave more. This is a sweet and heartfelt story. Love Cain and Addisen so much because they are both protective and strong willed

Excellent first book in the Unfinished Love series. Before that night is Book one of two books. Addison Milan is a college dropout that is raising her brother and sister since their mother abandoned them two years ago. Caine Spencer is a rough and touch police officer. The two meet at a diner where Addison serves him the worst coffee ever, but he continues to drink it! Addison and her brother Tanner, and sister Kylie are living in an ugly blue conversion van. They have made it their home. They have a place to sleep, a cooler to put in some food items. They go to the recreation center to shower, brush their teeth and use the facilities. Addison tkes the kids to school every morning. Addison is trying to save up money so that she can make sure that they will no longer have to live in the van. Caine comes to the diner on a daily basis and sits in the same spot. Caine volunteers at school and community events so that he can have some goodness back into his life. Addison also has a day job at Bernadette's. She is able to pick up the kids from school and take them to the park or do something fun with them until she had to go to work at the diner. She would get a booth for the kids to sit in and do their homework and eat dinner. She would "take the kids home" on her dinner break, but it was really just driving around while Tanner and Kylie are getting the mattress ready and getting the back of the van set up for the night. Caine has asked Tanner permission to ask Addison out on a date. Tanner has given his permission but Kylie did not. Kylie said that Caine had to take her and Tanner to the movies first. Caine wants to take the kids for the whole day so that Addison can sleep in and rest. He also gives her a certificate to get a massage while they are gone. Addison and Caine become closer every day. There is another regular at the diner, David, who likes to have Addison wait on him. He wants her to select his meals. He has asked numerous times if she would go out on a date with him. David knows Addison's secret. He knows her and the kids are sleeping in the van. What will she do? Will he ruin everything? Should she run? Grab a copy of the book and find the answers. This is another very well written book by Violet Duke. I have enjoyed all of her books.

Loved the book and the great characters and strong story line... Lots of emotions in this one and the only thing I don't like is having to wait for Book 2 for the conclusion... I also don't like that Book 2 is not available for pre-purchase... It is supposed to be out in less than a week but it will require notes in several places to remind me to go looking for it on release date...

There are very few authors that can bring me to tears, but I would highly recommend having a box of tissues standing by when you head the last chapter of About That Night. I cried when Harry Potter saw Dumbledore murdered, and I had tears running down my cheeks as I read that final chapter. The fortunate thing is that the story isn't over, this is just a cliffhanger and the finale is due to be released soon. Violet Duke has a magical touch; she creates characters so real, so personable, that you would really love to hang out with them. I absolutely love her books and give this my highest recommendation!

Anytime I think of Violet Duke, I picture this ball of positive energy with wings, a wand in one hand sprinkling pixie dust of romance and brandishing with the other a pen to write the most alluring and charismatic of love stories!!! And that brings us to her new “Unfinished Loved Series”, about four brothers who find love but lose only to get another chance down the years to reclaim it. It’s fresh, it’s new and it makes it even more emotional and romantic to wait for that HEA. First in the series, “Before That Night” has a young teenager Addison Millan trying to survive through sheer determination to take care of her younger siblings as they live in a beat up van. Having lost a roof and a mother to drugs, her abandonment only motivates Addison to create a better life. Always with a smile and a kind word, working as a waitress and a caretaker, she adds positivity and courage to her resume. Her immense strength and smile draws the gruff and tough cop Caine Spencer to the diner everyday and that everyday leads to conversations that turn into friendship and the flare of attraction that kindles between them is kept at bay given the circumstances. But all that changes instantly as Addison gets into the crosshairs of an obsessive diner, blackmailing her with the secret that she’s been hiding. And that one incident creates a domino effect of consequences even as Addison and Caine fall in love with each other. As her secret see the light of day, it comes down to final straw if Caine is going to go against the oath he had taken as a cop and support Addison. And is Addison brave enough to make the biggest decision of her young life…and if she goes with the choice she’s making, will her love survive…. for a second chance…. Another brilliant, captivating and an emotional love story, all Violet Duke style full of love and care, friendship and support, warmth and family. Can’t wait to read the second installment “Every Night Without You’ as Addison comes back into Caine’s life, the unanswered questions, sacrifice and the love that never died for seven long years!
