When the author’s parents discovered he was born with mosaic Down syndrome a month after he was born, they were told not to expect him to be able to read, get a job, or have a family of his own. Yet Winchell went on to build his own life, pursue his own interests (particularly in the world of film), marry his wife, Tal, and have two sons, Matthew and Adam. The memoir follows the author’s path to independence with a focus on the aspects of his upbringing that could have been changed to better support his development. In particular, the schooling he received did not best serve his needs: Winchell reflects on being placed in specialized classes that were actually for children with emotional issues and given insufficient time in speech therapy to build his social skills. While this account is clear-eyed about the chronic underestimation the author experienced from his family, he tells his story without passing judgment on his parents. This is a memoir written with profound empathy for his family, recognizing their shortcomings and attempts to coddle him, and it is dedicated to his father, who passed away in October of 2007.
