If any person who is looking to succeed in any field in business had a spec of the determination and persistence this man had, matched with his integrity, the business world would be far better off right now. I picked this book up thinking i would get tips on how to become a successful entrepreneur (and I did), but this is so much more than that. This is not only an account of not a shrewed, hard-working,intelligent, take-no-prisoners businessman, but also that of an amazing life. Mr. Gaston experineced poverty and racism as a child, a world war, a country that had so little respect and opportunities for him when he returned, the danger of losing his life in the iron mines as a worker, the loss of several business interests as well as numerous loved ones, a failed business interest, disrespect from people of every color in his own hometown, the Civil Rights movement in front of his own hotel, his own kidnapping, and several other obstacles too numerous too mention. And STILL, at his death at 103, all of his businesses were valued at $140,000,000. How real is that!?!?

This story really made me appreciate and admire what this man went through to become who he was. It told much more than how to get rich and stay rich. It spoke of his beginnings, his many obstacles in his path, and the ability to persevere in a time when it seemed impossible, especially in Birmingham, Alabama. It really put many things in perspective for me, and I hope other people get the honor of reading this timeless piece. I gained much more than I ever expected initially.
