Enter a world of immortal danger and desire—and discover an incredible fate borne of blood.

Tendra: One minute, I’m a bartender in gritty Mission City; the next, I’m whisked away by a vampire named Athan who tells me that I’m the lifeblood of his clan. It sounds unbelievable, but he’s got evidence I can’t deny. Turns out, Athan belongs to an underground society of vampires who feed only on humans with their consent. Their enemies have no such qualms, and they want me dead. The only thing standing in their way is strong, sexy Athan. And the closer we get, the more tempted I am to let Athan feed. . . .

Athan: How could I have known when I snatched this snarky, beautiful human off the streets that she would change my destiny? As a loyal soldier, I must deliver Tendra to our future king—my brother. Empowered with the blood of ten generations of the Gregorie breed, she is fated to rule as our queen. But there’s something between us that’s so intoxicating, so carnal, I can’t help wanting Tendra for myself . . . even if it’s treason.

About the Author

Megan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. A former journalist, she switched to fiction when she decided she liked writing her own endings better. She lives in Pennsylvania with her very own nerdy husband and two kids. Although rather fun-sized, she’s been told she has a full-sized personality. When Megan isn’t writing, she’s either lounging with her two cats, named after John Hughes, characters or . . . thinking about writing.

I set the tray of empties on the bar, and Kev went to work washing them while I leaned on the bar with a hand on my hip.

Carl turned to me. “Hey, Sugar.” He puckered his lips in a fake kiss, and I blew him one back. I knew his wife, daughter, and grandkids, so he was the only man who could call me Sugar. He and his brothers came in most nights, hats resting on the bar so the lights gleamed off their identical smooth, dark heads. “How’s Sasha?” I asked. His youngest grandchild recently broke her arm.

“Bah,” he said, slapping a hand on the bar. Well, he kinda missed the bar, but I got his intention. “She’s fine. Cast on, and she’s still jumping off the bed.”

“I’d take it away and make her sleep on a mattress on the floor,” I said.

Beside Carl, Michael laughed. “Harsh, Sugar.”

Okay, so Michael would call me Sugar, too.

“We’ll see how you are one day when you have your own rug rats,” Kev said.

“Who says I want kids?” I picked up my tray and leaned over the bar to slide it on the shelf underneath.

Kev raised an eyebrow, but didn’t answer.

I didn’t have any living relatives left that I knew of. My mom said my dad left when I was a baby, and later she’d heard he died in a car accident. So part of me yearned for a family of my own, but I hadn’t met a guy yet who I wanted to mix genes with. And I’d have to think long and hard about whether I wanted to bring a baby into this world. It hadn’t always treated me so well.

“Come on, guys,” Kev urged again. “You can’t go home, but—”

“You already said that!” Michael yelled, trying to grab his hat three times as he stood up. I picked it up for him and
placed it on his head. He muttered a thanks and followed his brothers toward the door. “Bye, Sugar!” Carl yelled.

“Get home safe!” I yelled back.

I glanced at the corner quickly, but the large man was gone. He must have slipped out while I was talking at the bar. I shivered, hoping he never came back. And then kinda hoping he did.

“You all right?” Kev’s brows were knit in concern.

“Me? Yeah, I’m fine.”

“You looked like you saw a ghost or something.”

“Just felt like someone walked on my grave,” I said, watching as the last customer walked out the door. Ruby immediately sat down on a chair, took off her shoes, and stuck her feet in a pair of flip-flops. She was a petite black woman, and her flip-flops were child-size, which I teased her about a lot. She gasped and wiggled her toes.

“I don’t know how you walk in those things all night and then the whole way home.” She glared at me, then nudged her red heel and scrunched her nose. “I hate them. Devil shoes.” She crossed her fingers and hissed at it.

I shrugged and began to clean up the tables and lift the chairs. “I don’t know. They don’t bother me. And they are awesome weapons.” Mom was always big on self-defense. I was like MacGyver in a fight. Hell, I’d find a way to use a paper clip to rip open a jugular.

We cleaned up the bar in record time, and I plunked down on a stool at the bar to down a glass of water before the mile walk home. Ruby stood next to me and rested her head on my shoulder. “How are you? I feel like we haven’t talked in forever.”

I shrugged her off me with a laugh. “You’ve been busy with your woman.”

Ruby sat down next to me, nibbling her lip. “I know, but you’re my friend. I should be making time.”

“Stop, it’s a new relationship. You just feel bad because you know I don’t have any other friends.” Ruby sucked in a breath. Maybe I hadn’t meant to say that out loud, and not so bluntly, but it was true. I sighed. “It’s fine, really. I’ve been catching up on some k-dramas. I don’t mind being alone.”

Ruby rubbed her bare shoulder. “Maybe the three of us can hang out.”

I shrugged.

“She said she might stop in sometime next week when I’m working. If you want to meet her.” Ruby was a peacemaker. She liked everyone happy and okay with each other.

I was a little too cynical for that, but I’d make it work for her. “Sure, that’d be nice.”

Ruby’s face brightened, despite the tired lines in her face. “Great. I’ll tell her. I want you two to like each other.”
Classic Ruby. Wanting a get-along gang. Which was not a bad thing, so I needed to get over myself. “I’m sure we’ll get along just fine.”

She squeezed my hand, then stood up. “I’m going to get going. Kev, you okay closing down?”

“Got it handled, ladies,” he said, pausing as he counted the money in the drawer. “Go on home.”

After saying good night to Kev and Ruby, I slipped on my leather jacket, turned up the collar, and began my walk home. The night air was cool, but a comfortable cool, a slight breeze lifting my hair and cooling my neck and clammy skin.

When Mom was alive, she’d wake up just to come to the bar to walk me home. I’d told her I could handle it myself, but she said she enjoyed it. We’d talk about everything and nothing in the darkness, and it ended up being some of my best memories.

I was depressing the hell out of myself right now.

I didn’t hear his footsteps, I didn’t see him, but I felt his presence, that same overwhelming fog that spun my head. I’d always prided myself on my instincts, but this was on a whole other sixth-sense level.

I slipped my hand into the pocket of my jacket and fingered my switchblade. Ruby asked me one time why I didn’t carry pepper spray like a regular person. But my mom had always insisted I learned how to physically defend myself. She hadn’t expected me to jump at the chance to take a class on weapon training, but I had. So a switchblade was my weapon of choice, and I was never without it on my walk home from work. Whether this man wanted to rape me, rob me, or kill me, I was going to be prepared. And then I was getting the hell out of Mission.
He was drawing closer now, the air thick with him, and I struggled to breathe, to keep my wits about me. I would not be beat today.

Keep it together, Ten. I counted in my head, knowing he was gaining on me, that I wouldn’t be able to outrun him, no way. Not a man that size. Not when I was wearing heels.

Five. I closed my fingers around the handle of my blade. Four. I adjusted the grip. Three. I pressed the small button to flick out the blade. Two. I took a deep breath.

I whirled around, crouching down while at the same time swiping the knife in an upward arc across my body.
I’d been right; he was there, inches behind me, and he reared back, narrowly avoiding the blade from slicing across his neck. In a fluid motion, I brought the blade back down and went for the gut, the vulnerable area between the sides of his unzipped jacket.

I didn’t even see his hand until his fingers closed around my wrist, squeezing my pressure point immediately, forcing me to drop my blade. With a frustrated yell, I reached behind me, slipped off my shoe, and tried to stab him in the face with my stiletto. But he knocked it out of my hand with ease, sending it flying into the street.
My heart beat a panicked rhythm and as he tugged me to his chest, I struggled to stay on my feet, to focus on getting away from him alive. I had one last defense, so I brought my knee up with a jerk to slam his groin.

I didn’t get anywhere near my target, because he was no longer in front of me, and in the next second I was airborne, His arms wrapped around me from behind, and my legs dangled uselessly as he crushed my back to his chest. I tried to fling my head back to head-butt him, but his monstrous height and my shortness rendered that move ineffective.

My last resort, the only thing I had left, which would get me nowhere in this part of town, was to scream.
So I did. I screamed my lungs out and flailed like a wild animal. He muttered, his voice a deep rumble along my spine, “I’m sorry to do this, Tendra,” before passing his wrist in front of my face.

I inhaled something sweet, sickly sweet. “What the . . .” The last word didn’t come. My lips and tongue wouldn’t move. My vision darkened at the edges, and the last thing I remembered was fingers brushing my hair off my forehead before everything went black.

I've never read a book by Megan Erickson, actually... I don't think before coming across Blood Guard I had ever heard of her. What a shame! As I pursued Netgalley looking for something that would hold my interest I stumbled across Blood Guard and was instantly intrigued. Going in with an open mind I was prepared for anything. Tendra is a woman alone in Mission City, her mother has passed away and she has no family or roots to call her own after a life spent moving from place to place. Just as she starts to get the itch to move on she's taken and her life becomes something from a movie. She's strong, and not just because her mother made sure she could take care of herself but because she has will and determination. But her life and everything she knows to be true is about to be challenged. Athan is the second son of the Gregorie Vampire King. His mission is to bring the Sanguivita safely to his brother so that his people may be saved from a future as slaves to a enemy vampire clan. The attraction is pretty instant and intense but, both Athan and Tendra are set on following through with this mission despite rogue vampires, and stinky bad guys. Until finally a choice has to be made. And lives will be forever changes because of lies that were told and deals that have been made. I loved every moment spent with in these pages. I will admit that the first little bit of just Tendra interacting with customers at the bar was slow for me but, once she finished her shift things picked up. So really... maybe the first 5%; not enough if a slow start to stop me from reading though. I had questions and the needed answers. I enjoyed watching the dance between the H/h and trying to figure out how this was going to play out and if Athan and Tendra were going to put me in the position of a possible cliffhanger (they didn't). They did answer my questions and lead me through a wonderful beginning to a new series that I can't wait to continue. I do wish that the last 20% seemed a little rushed. Maybe I just needed more from Athan once they made it back to the Gregorie holding. I'm not sure. Either way a fantastic read, a new "world" that I'm excited to explore and characters (secondary as well because Zeb NEEDS a book) that were well thought out and developed.

This book has almost everything I could ask for in a paranormal romance. It has anguish, romance, betrayal, action, a great plot as well as an amazing writing style. This book managed to pull me in from the very beginning and it made me feel. Although I will be honest it was not always the best feelings in the world but whenever an author can actually make me feel anything for the characters besides simple "ok cool things are happening" I become a fan of the author. Tendra had me feeling all of the emotions that was happening to her. The anguish, the excitement, the bloodlust (non vampire kind), as well as her budding emotions for the man she was not meant for. I cried once during this book and when a book can invoke such feelings that lead you to cry you know the author is doing something right. Athan grew up knowing one thing. Tendra is for his brother, the future king. All Athan is meant to do is bring Tendra to him and then find something else to focus on. That all seems great on paper but in actuality Tendra is so much more. She is a fierce human who will fight to the death for those she cares for. Even those she doesn't know. After all, her blood is meant to save the human race and she willingly comes along to do her duty. But as Athan evolves during this story so do his feelings for Tendra. Throughout the story you will be held in suspense as you try to unravel the truth before you are told by the author. Trust me, that's what I did after all. But when you find out the truth you will be shocked, you will want to hold all of the characters in your arms and let them cry. And most of all you will want Tendra's cat, even if your not a cat person. This was a great book that I would highly recommend to any paranormal romance readers. I can not wait to read the next book in the series as I hope I have the next two main characters figured out ;).

This is an interesting twist on the “fated mates” trope and I really enjoyed this rich new world. Tendra is a 20-something young woman newly-alone as her mother had just died in a car wreck, leaving her adrift in Mission City, New Jersey. She’s a cocktail waitress and deeply unsettled by a swarthy customer one evening. She’s even more unsettled when he kidnaps her and tells her she must come with him if she wants to live! At least he’s packed her most precious belongings from her barren apartment, including her cat, Brex. Even more unbelievable is what this dude, Alain, tells her: her blood has mystic properties and will help transform his brother Idris, sworn king of the Gregorie clan…of vampires. In their prophesy, they’ve been waiting ten generations for a Sanguivita–Tendra–and with the powers her blood holds Idris will be able to effectively combat the warring Valerian clan. Yeah, she’s not buying it. But, she has little choice but to accept Athan’s aid when the bad guys come calling. Learning about the hidden vampire culture lurking just below Mission City has Tendra mixed up–and aroused. Those vamps are some seriously kinky folk. Plus, the more time she spends with Athan, the more she admires and desires him. And the feeling is very mutual. Their escape to the Gregorie compound is complicated by several attacks, some of which are thwarted by Brex the wonder cat. There is a good mix of danger, intimacy and downright delicious sexytimes. Athan falls hard for Tendra, yet holds back on tasting her blood, knowing that to drink from her could void the prophesy and Idris’ expected boon. Unfortunately, it’s not in his hands when the treachery extends far beyond what had been expected. I liked Tendra, who is a take-no-shit kinda gal. Her life has been weird, and she finally realizes why once she meets Athan and learns about her place in their world. Honorable Athan’s confused by his compulsion toward Tendra; shouldn’t he not be attracted to his brother’s promised? But, the more he puzzles over it, the more he knows deep down: it doesn’t matter. He will do anything to have Tendra for his own. While this might seem cavalier, he knows his brother has no interest for Tendra beyond the desire for her blood to transform him for battle. And, neither he nor Idris expected the depth of their own father’s manipulation. There’s a lot more going here than clan clashes, the entire human race is at stake, literally, as the Valerians have plans to reveal themselves and take control of the populace to feed and frenzy. Together, Athan and Tendra have the ability to stop it. And, while the war isn’t over, a key battle is won before the end. I’m expecting Idris to find his fated mate in the next book, and I look forward to it!

With Blood Guard, there was a lot of I like this, but... going on in my head--really, that about sums it up. Still here's some specifics: The worldbuilding is interesting, and I'll definitely keep my eye out for the next book in the series, which will feature Idris, Anthan's brother, and the half-vampire, half-human daughter of a higher-up in a rival vampire clan. Tons of potential there, and we saw just enough of the brother here (not a lot, but what I saw I liked) to stoke my interest. There are still some questions about this world, though, and a big ol' oh really??? still ringing in my head at how quickly Tendra's human BFF accepted the existence of vampires in the world. I just think that most people wouldn't quite be so quick to believe it, at least not without prior clues and/or proof. A definite plus: shapeshifters exist here, and we didn't see any...yet. Probably. Maybe? There is a question about one of the characters being something more than they seem which isn't answered definitively by the book's end. Fingers crossed that shifters come up later in the series... I liked Ten and Anthan, and thought they were good together. The reason why they could get to an HEA even though for most of the book they think they can't I thought was pretty obvious. There was a bit of a twist with exactly who was behind everything that was going on, but really, even that wasn't a huge shock...we pretty much knew that that particular individual wasn't going to be winning any awards for their benevolence, well, ever. Though I chuckled every time Ten made a modern pop reference (especially a Disney one, which most of them were--as they should be) and Anthan gave her a blank look, there really wasn't a whole heck of a lot of evidence of him and the other vampires being 40+ years older than they appeared to felt like opportunities were missed to make more of a case of their otherness like we usually see in books with characters who are supernaturally older than they seem. Instead, they came off as just slightly different guys who drink stuff that frequently tints their teeth red. One of the best parts of the book is the relationships between characters--Ten and Anthan, Anthan and Idris, Idris and Ten, Brex the cat and pretty much everybody--and I look forward to seeing more of this in future books. Rating: 3 1/2 stars / B I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This is my first read by Megan Erickson, but it won't be my last. Blood Guard is well-written and engaging quick read. It's not a loaded with action, paranormal romance, and includes a snarky strong female character. Overall, the story is an entertaining romance with the added bonus of suspense, intrigue, political corruption, family loyalty and betrayal, and fan yourself steamy times. I'll be eagerly anticipating the next Mission novel. ;)

This new Mission series sets your heart pounding right away! We begin with Athan finding Tendra. Scaring her to death is only part of his charm. He is also really attracted to his charge. Duty must win over lust, since he needs to get her to his brother immediately to save the human race. Tendra AKA "Ten" is a very personable and sincere loner. She is surprised that she can feel such strong emotions for Athan - that is not hate. He is very attractive, and her heart goes pitter patter anytime he even looks at her. If only she could be his... This book charmed me almost from page one. The characters were strong, but not overbearing. I think the lore makes people feel like vampires should be - but I am glad in this book the MC is not. I love their story and I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment in this amazing new series!

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog*** Blood Guard by Megan Erickson Book One of the Mission series Publisher: Loveswept Publication Date: September 11, 2017 Rating: 4 stars Source: eARC from NetGalley Summary (from Goodreads): Enter a world of immortal danger and desire—and discover an incredible fate borne of blood. Tendra: One minute, I’m a bartender in gritty Mission City; the next, I’m whisked away by a vampire named Athan who tells me that I’m the lifeblood of his clan. Empowered with the blood of ten generations of the Gregorie breed, she is fated to rule as our queen. But there’s something between us that’s so intoxicating, so carnal, I can’t help wanting Tendra for myself . . . even if it’s treason. What I Liked: I'm going to be honest: I've always loved (adult) vampire romance novels, specifically male vampire/female human ones. I know the vampire thing has been exhausted and beat dead over the last ten years or so, and there are certainly many novels that sound the same when it comes to this trope. I've not read a good PNR novel featuring vampires in a long time, and Blood Guard was exactly what I wanted and needed. I've been a huge fan of Erickson's so I would have read this book even if I hated vampire romance novels. But luckily, I love them, and I love Erickson's books, so this book is a huge win for me! And even better - it was a good book. Tendra has been living in Mission for a short time, since her mother passed away. She and her mother moved a lot over the years, and the latest place was Mission. Tendra has no attachments to Mission, but she likes her job and her coworkers. One night at the bar she works at changes everything. She finds out (the hard way) that her blood is special and will make the head of the Gregorie vampire clan stronger and more powerful. Oh yeah, and she finds out that vampires exist. Athan Gregorie has come to take her to his brother, Idris, who is the vampire who will be strengthened by Tendra's blood. Athan's duty is to bring Tendra safely to Idris, with none of her blood spilled. Tendra's duty is to be the queen of the Gregorie clan by giving her blood to the king (Idris). But duty comes up against their growing feelings for each other, and they will find that the closer they get to the Gregorie stronghold, the harder it is to let go. Sometimes in romance novels, I adore the hero and HATE the heroine. It's so sad when that happens, because the story is pretty much ruined at that point. I'm always slightly nervous when starting a new romance novel, for that reason. In this book's case... I loved Athan, and I loved Tendra. Blood Guard A Mission Novel by Megan Erickson NetGalley provided me with an ARC for a professional review A sweet and sexy yet typical vampire romance with small twist and a great gotcha”. Told in two very clear POV's – Tendra's and Athan's – the story of Tendra, a normal girl living in the abnormal city of Mission. Mission is crawling with beasties, particularly those with fangs. And she is marked as the savior of one of the fanged (vampire clans) or so she is told by Athan, he blood guard. He is the second son of the king, and his job, his only job, is to get Tendra's to to his brother the king. The ever changing POV is nicely done with clearly defined personalities and word choices. In fact that is perhaps the best part of the book, as you can fall in love with the characters, both of them, through their own thoughts and words. The romance is as important as the steamy love scenes. The few action scenes are well written. 4 out of 5 – this book is Book Nerd Approved

“My soul wants you.” Have you ever read a book, loved it and realize it's a series? Omo! Tendra have been on a run all her life, never taking roots in a place, never belonging somewhere, never making friends except Ruby and her cat, Brex. Until she met Athan. Athan is loyal to a fault, upholds his duty and will do anything for the good of his people, or vampire. Tendra and Athan's journey to Gregorie's household was like an adventure with meeting friends along the way, with some bumps and detours and attack from the enemy. It was actually quite enjoying and exhilarating as you learn the world, customs and traditions this book has to give. The only downside for me was the main characters' constant banter. I think for others, they may find it sexy and hot, but I only find it exhausting. Nevertheless, the book is filled with action-packed adventure and some laughs and humor thrown in the way! Of course, some sexy times and twist and turns that makes the reading quite fun and unpredictable! I enjoy the world the Blood Guard gave me. It is quite different from the vampire series I've read and gave me something I would look forward to exploring. Aside from Athan and Tendra, I am quite curious and interested in Idris. And since I love the dedication. To Kate Beckinsale: Thanks for giving us Selene, a badass female vampire to look up to.

Tall, dark and brooding meets short, sassy and sarcastic! This book had the WOW factor I crave, and I loved that it was not like every other Vamp novel out there. Ten and Athan's story had a unique and very creative twist to it. The plot was very faced past and full of action, pulse-pounding drama and neck-biting suspense. There were elements of both classic and modern romance. The sexual tension was a slow burn, building in increments with a look here and a touch there. And, when they got down to the getting down, the chemistry was explosive, and the intimacy was scorching hot! It's a wonder they didn't burn themselves right up! I was a big fan of the way that Athan gently, but confidently, guided Tendra into acceptance of her destiny and the way that Ten, in return, helped Athan to find his humanity. There were some surprises and turns, that I didn't see coming, that kept me devouring the pages as quickly as possible to find out what happened next. Near the end, though, I slowed down, because I just did not want to see this book end. Athan is my new Vampy book boyfriend! I am SO ready for Blood Veil, the next one in the series! *I received a complimentary ARC of this story from NetGalley & Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

It has been a while since I have read a vampire story so I was excited to hear about this new one from Megan Erickson. I really loved the world she created with this book. Tendra is alone in this world except for a few close friends. She isn’t afraid of what goes bump in the night and she has the fighting skills to back that up. But she has met her match when she meets Athan and learns a long guarded secret about her family past. She also learns vampires are real. Tendra and Athan have a long way to get from Mission City to the Gregorie home past the Misson Woods and there are a few people or should I say creatures trying to make sure they don’t get there. I think Tendra and Athan were a little instalovy but that is expected in the circumstances they were in. I really felt the connection between the two and was wondering how all of it would work out due to Tendra’s “duty” to the Gregoire Clan. Even though Athan was tasked to protect Tendra she really fought for him too. I loved the interaction between those two. I figured some things out in this book but it wasn’t because it was predictable. It just had my mind going at 100 trying to figure out what was what. My favorite scene….Wings. That was so great and I can’t wait to see what is next for this couple.

I REALLY liked this book! I was on the edge of my seat through the entire thing and really didn't want it to end because I was so wrapped up in the characters. The writing is so good that you feel like you are there and experiencing everything right along with them. I loved the honor and core values of both of the characters, they were so deep and strong. These are the kind of characters that stick with you after you've finished a book, that you want to keep following and getting to know even more. I can't wait to see where the series goes but I can't imagine liking any two characters more than I do these.

I did not know what to expect but I got an interesting ride. This is a world where vampires live among humans while a war brews between vampire clans. Athan is sexy, honest, and driven. Tendra has lived an unstable life built on moving and loss of family. With a cat as her companion, she finds a way to trust Athan and make decisions that affect her life as well as others. The two of them are a strong couple and will do anything for each other. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one. I received a copy of this book through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.

Review: Vampire books are a dime a dozen, but this one had a unique twist on this one to make it stand out. I have read one other book by this Author and knew I liked her writing, but the one I read was contemporary so was not sure how I would like this genre by her. I loved it! It was full of action, intrigue and sexiness. I liked that both Tendra and Athan can kick butt and take names. Besides that their chemistry is off the charts besides adding in all that forbidden fruit tension between them. I have to ask, what is the deal with Brex, Tendra's cat? There has to be more to him than meets the eye. I won't give away the whole story, I think the blurb gives a good gist as to the premise of the book. I will end with it was totally engrossing and I did not want to put it down. Now, to wait for the second book. 4.5Stars *I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book provided by the publisher.*

4.5 stars--Blood Guard is the first in Miss Erickson’s new vampiric Mission series. As I’ve seen in her other paranormal titles, this author does an outstanding job building intricate worlds I find mesmerizing. There are a few species/types of vampires and paranormal creatures within this world, but I found the explanations thorough enough to keep track of them as they reappeared throughout the book. I thought the overall premise of the plot was really interesting and it definitely kept me hooked, wondering what would happen next. The action scenes were fast-paced and exciting, and the general pace of the book was pretty brisk. While the faster paced plot echoed the intensity of the fight and chase scenes, that also meant the romance was a bit of a whirlwind. Though it wasn’t quite insta-love between Tendra and Athan, feelings evolved rather quickly in Blood Guard. This is really the only element of the book that didn’t quite work for me. Although there clearly was a connection immediately between the hero and heroine, which isn't all that uncommon in paranormal romances, I would have liked to see it develop slower so I had the opportunity to become a bit more invested in the characters and their romance. Regardless, I did like Tendra and Athan. I always enjoy strong, independent heroines like Ten and I appreciated how well they balanced each other. Overall, I enjoyed the romance, main characters, and was intrigued by the secondary characters of Blood Guard. The continuing plotline of two vampire clans facing off against each other and the potential impact on the unsuspecting human world grabbed my attention and assured I’ll be tuning in for the second book in Miss Erickson’s Mission series. If you’re a fan of paranormal or vampire books, Blood Guard is certainly worth checking out. *Received eARC from Netgalley. The author and publisher had no influence over this review*

5 Stars!!! I was completely blown away with this book! Talk about starting a series with a bang and making me want to read more of it ASAP! This is one of the most amazing paranormal books I've read, be it MF or MM. Tendra is one kickass heroine and truly, aside from one tiny moment in which I wanted to slap her, she was resourceful, confident, supportive and definitely not your run-of-the-mill helpless female. Athan was absolutely swoon-worthy, even when he was trying to do the right thing and deliver Tendra to his brother. They just had so much chemistry and the love connection and trust growing between them was so obvious that I was ecstatic that it all played out like it did. Of course, it didn't hurt that Megan Erickson wrote some of the hottest sex scenes that I've ever read between them. *fans self* Tendra's background and the whole lifeblood storyline was so intriguing and while I guessed who the bad guy was, I was captivated by how it all worked out. I don't want to give much away, because this is a story you need to experience, but there were so many nuances to the plot and I can't wait to read Idris' book, hopefully very soon. Overall, if you love vampires, MF, fantastic characters and enthralling storylines (and even if you don't, trust me, you don't want to miss this book), you can't go wrong with Blood Guard. A must-read that's going directly to my Favorites. *** Copy provided to the reviewer via NetGalley for my reading pleasure, a review wasn't a requirement. ***

Tendra's life has never been an easy one. As a bartender in Mission City, she's finally found what feels like a home to her. Her mother, dead in a car accident, taught her how to fend for herself as they moved from place to place during her childhood. But her life changes in an instant when she's kidnapped by a mysterious man who claims that she's the savior of his people. Athan is a blood guard, right hand man to his brother, soon to be King of the Gregorie vampire clan. The prophecies say the king will receive life giving powers from the 'Sanguivita', a special human who will be his sole provider of human blood. Athan's job is to bring her to their fortress, but first he has to convince Tendra that he's not crazy and that she's the one he's been looking for. For ten generations, Tendra's blood has become distilled down to the essence needed to protect the Gregorie and the human race from two factions; the Valarians ,who wish to enslave humans and the Quellan, a shadowy group of vampiric assassins. Athan's duty is to bring Tendra safely to his brother. What he doesn't count on is that the spirited human female will get under his skin and make him struggle to remind himself that she's off limits. Can they ignore the flames of desire flickering between them or will they risk their peoples' destinies to be together? I was sucked into this story right from the start! It's a gritty world that Tendra lives in, a woman who knows self defense and isn't afraid to fight to protect herself. Though she's physically overwhelmed by Athan when they first meet, she gets in enough decent blows to make Athan treat her with wary respect and admiration. He has the proof that she is the Sanguivita and Tendra takes the news in stride, determined to fulfill her duty just as Athan plans to fulfill his. I loved Tendra's character though early on she makes some foolish decisions that come to haunt them later. She has a cat, Brex, who comes along with her every step of the way and clearly has some extra sixth sense when danger is in the air. Athan comes across as a very protective and loyal vampire, once a human/vampire hybrid until he was fully turned. The author does a great job of creating the world where vampires live below the streets of Mission and have their own dual society unknown to the humans above. The world is well described and interesting without being too overwhelming. There's a fair amount of information imparted to the reader, but this is to pave the way for future books in the series (of which we get a teaser in the epilogue chapter of this story). Athan has a close friend, Zeb, who provides some of the fun banter in the story. (Yes, bromances exist between vampires too!). Athan and Tendra have definite chemistry, and it's not long before they succumb to it, with some unexpected consequences. One point of interest is a visit that Athan and Tendra make to a vampire dance club that turns out to be more of a sex club giving the reader an eyeful, so to speak. It definitely ups the heat level of this story into the more erotic category though the sex scenes between the couple themselves are steamy but not kinky. There is plenty of action throughout, and the story moves at a swift pace to its exciting conclusion. Blood Guard is a sexy, intense, blood-sucking good time!

4.5 stars!! Megan Erickson has hit it out of the park with this paranormal romance featuring a lovably sassy heroine and a sexy vampire on a mission to save the world! Tendra and Athan set the pages of Blood Guard on fire! I am a picky paranormal reader. It takes more than just a sparkly vampire to make me happy. So, when I started the book, I went into it with a bit of trepidation. A day later and I'm singing the praises of Megan Erickson and dying for more of world of the Gregorie vampires! Seriously! This book is not your average paranormal romance. Athan is as sexy as they come and his humanity is his most endearing quality. He starts off as stoic and broody, but Tendra gets to him pretty quickly and he becomes fierce and protective of the human girl meant to save the world. Tendra is strong-willed and has some awesome one-liners! Her snark is on point. When she begins to fall for Athan, she doesn't see him as a vampire. She sees him as the man who will die to protect her. Oh and the the charts!!! Their connection builds slowly throughout the book and when the scale tips the pages set fire! I loved this and can't wait to read more of this series! It is a standlone, but interconnected to the next book in the series as the epilogue is the set up for book two! This will be your next paranormal read!!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book I am a HUGE Vampire fan and this is the first book by this author I have read, The way this author describes Athan I could truly see him in my mind, she did an amazing job weaving this world, where rival clans are at the start of a war and the Blood of Tendra is special, she is the 10th in her generation and she has been raised to protect herself, Tendra is grieving the loss of her mom, But when Athan kidnaps her and then starts telling her about Vampires and that she is meant for his brother the soon to be king of the Gregorie clan, she thinks he is crazy, that is until things start falling in place, But will they make it to the compound safely and will Tendra and Athan be able to fight their feeling for each other. I LOVED this book even the side characters of Zeb and Wyatt, I cannot wait to continue in this world

'Blood Guard' by Megan Erickson is the First Book in the New Series called "Mission'. This is the story of Tendra and Athan. Athan is the Guard sent to bring Tendra home to his brother Idris. Tendra just lost her mother and is just getting over that but she has also been thinking of moving. Tendra and her mom moved all the time when her mom was given 'signs' that it was time to move. Tendra has no ideal that she is a Sanguivita. Tendra mother was to prepare her to take her place as Sanguivita of the Gregorie Vampire Clan but Tendra has no ideal what Athan is talking about when he 'kidnaps' her. Athan tries to go over how her mother was killed by Valarians who are a Rival Vampire clan and that he had to move fast because they have been trying to kill her for a long time. Tendra is having a hard time believing any of this is true at first but when the bad guys start trying to take her she starts to get it. Athan is finding that he is drawn to Tendra but she is supposed be for his brother. Tendra too feels something for Athan even thought she is unsure what is going to happen to her. This was an exciting story! "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."

3.75 stars--fast paced and intriguing 3.75 stars--BLOOD GUARD is the first installment in Megan Erickson’s contemporary, adult MISSION paranormal, erotic, romance series. This is vampire Blood Guard Athan and human waitress Tendra’s story line. Told from dual first person perspectives (Athan and Tendra) BLOOD GUARD introduces the world of the Gregorie vampire-their enemies, a rival vampire clan, known as the Valarians who want to enslave all of humanity as blood banks, and the Quellens (assassins for hire). With the impending arrival of the King-to-be’s Sanguivita, the Gregorie clan prepares for a future awash in unmentionable powers. Our heroine Tendra is a strong female character; the Sanguivita of the Gregorie clan-the sole human provider of blood to the king-a position she is ill prepared for, and a position of which, she knew nothing about. Athan is Gregorie vampire royalty but a royal designated as the Blood Guard to his brother’s future bride-a spare to the heir, so to speak but a spare whose position within the royal elite will soon come to light. Athan has been tasked to safely escort his brother’s future bride to her new home at the Gregorie compound but the compound has been compromised, and the royal family struggles to stay one step ahead of an unknown threat. What ensues is the building relationship between Athan and Tendra, and the potential fall out when the truth about the royal legacy and the Sanguivita prophecy is fulfilled. BLOOD GUARD is a story of insta-love; of forbidden romance between soul mates; two people pulled together by love and fate; and the unmistakable allure of what should have been. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. There is a palpable, sexual attraction between our leading couple-an attraction that does not go unnoticed by the man in charge. Fair warning, there are some M/M, F/F sexual situations between non-relevant characters but situations that explain the attraction and desires during vampire feedings. We are introduced to Athan’s brother Idris; his best friend Zeb, and Tendra’s co-worker and friend Ruby. There is a large assortment of secondary and supporting characters who come and go throughout the story including Athan and Idris’s father King Connell. Idris’s story line is next BLOOD VEIL November 2017. Here’s hoping the author has plans for Zeb’s HEA. The world building reveals some of the backstory and touches briefly on the history of the Sanguivita-her role as the sole human blood provider of the Gregorie king including the potential power her blood can gift to the rightful heir. Athan’s earlier years, including his relationship with his brother, struggled in the face of their father’s power and control- a control that will dissipate as the Sanguivita takes her place on the throne. I was hoping for some more information as to the reasons why the Gregorie vampires chose the town of Mission-perhaps it was the availability of the old, underground subway system that allows for a secret city beneath the town. BLOOD GUARD is a fast paced and intriguing story line. The premise is sexy and energetic- there was nothing earth shattering or new but the story line kept me entertained and interested in the fate of the leading characters; the romance is intense; the characters are colorful and charismatic. Megan Erickson’s BLOOD GUARD is a great start to a new series. I hope you give it a try.

I've always loved vampire books, but I haven't started a new vampire series in a very long time. I'm so glad one of my favorite authors decided to write a vampire series, because it's exactly what I've been missing! I loved every minute of it. Tendra waits tables at a seedy bar near her apartment in Mission City. Her mom, her only family, died about a month before, and she hasn't been handling it well. They were always moving around when she was growing up, and so she never made close friends, or any other connections, along the way. But, they had been in Mission City for 5 years, the longest she'd ever been anywhere, so she finally had a good friend, Ruby, and a job she could count on to pay the bills. But, now that her mother is gone, she's been waiting for a sign that she should leave town and not look back. All she had in the world were a few possessions and her cat, Brex. It would be so easy to just pick up and go. Too bad she didn't do it when she had the chance. Athan is the younger son of the king of his clan, the Gregorie. He's also a vampire with a duty he's known about all his life: find the Sanguivita, the female human meant to strengthen their clan, through her blood, and her bond with his brother, the future king. He is to find her and deliver her safely to his brother Idris, to enact the prophecy that's been ten generations in the making. He had never planned on his reaction to Tendra, the woman, rather than the Sanguivita, the blood vessel he's meant to guard with his life. He had no idea he'd fall for his brother's intended. He's always been about honor, and duty, and he doesn't know what will happen if he lets any of that slip. Athan and Ten's chemistry was HUGE right from the start. Even with her initial fear, her snark and sarcasm continually show up, and Athan isn't sure what to make of her. And he really isn't sure what to do with her cat. He's not been around humans much, other than for feeding. Since he's a royal, he wasn't raised like other vampires, who mesh in the human world quite readily. So, he has no real expectations, and even still she blows them out of the water. He's immensely drawn to her and it scares him. And vice versa. They have a very dangerous road ahead of them, and they have to stick together. But, they also need to remain separate in their hearts, to protect the prophecy at all costs. I enjoyed many of the side characters we met, and the villains were super scary and kept me on the edge of my seat. There was a new problem around every corner, and it was never what I expected. It was fast-paced and exciting. I really enjoyed the world the author has built here, and I can't wait to learn more about it, with Idris' book next in line. There are many enemies of the Gregorie, and of the humans for that matter, and the main characters have their work cut out for them. I'm very excited to see where this series will go from here. I highly recommend this to any paranormal romance lovers, or Megan Erickson lovers, for that matter. It was fantastic, exciting, sexy, and fun.

Yessssss!!!! Another great read! First time author for me and definitely will not be the last. This is the story of Athan, the Blood Guard and Tendra (love the name, by the way) the Sanguivita and their adventure. I enjoyed the word building and the different way that these, vampires from the Gregorie clan, lived. Filled with action, light banter, (especially Zeb, I hope he gets a book too ;) suspense, betrayal, and love, Tendra and Athan are tasked to do their duty. During the time that Athan is supposed to deliver Tendra to his brother Idris, truths are revealed and a love stronger than duty prevails. Great read! 4 stars.

This is my first read by Megan Erickson, but it won't be my last. Blood Guard is well-written and engaging. It's not a loaded with action, paranormal romance, but Athan and Tendra's journey is certainly interesting, especially with Tendra's snark and face it head on attitude. The world of the Gregorie vampires and their enemies takes shape as Athan explains Tendra's destiny to her. The chemistry and sexual tension builds and things don't go quite as the noble Athan had planned on their trip to deliver Tendra safely to his brother. Overall, the story is an entertaining romance with the added bonus of suspense, intrigue, political corruption, family loyalty and betrayal, and fan yourself steamy times. I'll be eagerly anticipating the next Mission novel.
