Borrowed Souls: A Soul Charmer Novel by Chelsea Mueller

Callie Delgado always puts family first, and unfortunately her brother knows it. She’s emptied her savings, lost work, and spilled countless tears trying to keep him out of trouble, but now he’s in deeper than ever, and his debt is on Callie’s head. She’s given a choice: do some dirty work for the mob, or have her brother returned to her in tiny pieces.

Renting souls is big business for the religious population of Gem City. Those looking to take part in immoral—or even illegal—activity can borrow someone else’s soul, for a price, and sin without consequence.

To save her brother, Callie needs a borrowed soul, but she doesn’t have anywhere near the money to pay for it. The slimy Soul Charmer is willing to barter, but accepting his offer will force Callie into a dangerous world of magic she isn’t ready for.

With the help of the guarded but undeniably attractive Derek—whose allegiance to the Charmer wavers as his connection to Callie grows—she’ll have to walk a tight line, avoid pissing off the bad guys, all while struggling to determine what her loyalty to her family’s really worth.

Losing her brother isn’t an option. Losing her soul? Maybe.

Chelsea Muller’s debut Urban Fantasy novel BORROWED SOULS is off to a fantastic start. Family first is the motto for Callie Delgado’s life and there seems to be no limit to that. Callie is stuck working part of a mob job in exchange for her older drug addict brother’s safety and debt payoff. Part of this job requires renting a soul from the local slimy soul charmer. Much to Callie’s disgust she is forced into working for the charmer for the next two weeks to cover the cost of the soul. Readers get to watch as Callie struggles in this new darker world she has unwillingly found herself in. The only bright side is her new partner and future romantic interest, Derek. Relationship wise this is a quick one on the timeframe, but I’m excited to watch Derek and Callie’s relationship grow. World building was great with just a slight shift of our own world to one where renting a soul to absolve your sins during the act of sinning was a normal activity. My only complaint was the rough start of the first two chapters, but Muller quickly finds her stride and Callie’s voice blooms. I loved the snarky attitude and fact that the main character isn’t this bad ass chick right off the start, she is a determined, naïve, and a tiny bit morally ambiguous of a young lady. A lot of Callie’s personality comes from her history of childhood, and even current, neglect and abuse by her family under their controlling line that family must always come first. I’m hopeful that we will see Callie begin to stand up to her family’s despicable behavior as she finds the value of herself, and emerges as a powerful woman. Here’s to hoping that the wait for book 2 will be a short one.

Totally enjoyed this book! Loved this story about Callie & Derek. I haven't read an Urban Fantasy book in a long time and this totally satisfied my fix. I was immediately entrapped into this story as soon as I began reading. I loved how these characters were written and the storyline about being in our current world twisted with magic, deception, love, bad guys and just a good well rounded hot romance. Story had some good twists and I am looking forward to see where it goes in this series from the author.

Borrowed Souls is book one in the Soul Charmer series. This is a brand new series that revolves around a girl recollecting souls for a soul charmer in order to save her brother. It has a unique plot and is a must read of any Urban Fantasy lover out there. We start off finding out that Callie Delgado needs to rent a soul in order to save her brother from the mob. She's the kind of gal that will do anything for her family even if they don't treat her the best. Callie heads to a soul charmer and manages to strike a bargain with him. In return for renting her a soul, she'll repo souls for two weeks from customer's that haven't returned them. Callie winds up teamed with Derek and they meet some interesting people along the way. The only issue that arises on the job is that someone is taking/stealing some of the rented souls before Callie and Derek can get to them and the soul charmer is not pleased. Our duo has to figure out who is behind this and why. Borrowed Souls is a refreshing change of pace in a genre I adore. CMueller did a great job in coming up with unique content and I enjoyed the world and characters. I was really intrigued on the soul rental aspect. The idea behind renting souls is that any smut/sin that would get on your soul during that time will be on the rented one instead. So you have people renting souls to rob places, have fun with hookers, or just because they're addicted to it. Cool premise and I cannot wait to see what the next book brings. If you're a fan of Urban Fantasy and looking for something new and different, give Borrowed Souls a try!
