Overview

Candide
by Voltaire

"The Bilingual Project" is a continuing effort making available great original works in translation at much lower cost than comparable bilingual editions. Bilingual texts are a very powerful tool to speed up the process of learning a language once you have attained the intermediate level and beyond.

All texts are optimized for e-readers. Many paragraphs have been broken into smaller units for the sake of this edition. The translation is rendered dark red font color, which displays as a dark gray color in monochrome readers, for easier distinction of original text versus translation.

About Candide
Candide, a work of satire on Leibniz's philosophy of optimistic determinism, remains the work for which Voltaire is best known. The view that the current world is the best of all possible worlds because the Creator would not have created a lesser one (Leibniz, Monadology) is critized through and through. Another instigator of the book is the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Candide has enjoyed both great success and great opposition. Immediately after its secretive publication, the book was widely banned because it contained religious blasphemy and political sedition.

About the Author

Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) (1694 - 1778) was an reknowned French historian and philosopher who advocated for civil liberties (freedom of religion, of expression, free trade and separation of church and state), and supported social reform. He wrote a number of polemical satires, of which Candide is an eminent example.
He was one of several Enlightenment figures (along with Montesquieu, John Locke, Richard Price, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Émilie du Châtelet) whose works and ideas influenced important thinkers of both the American and French Revolutions.
