Cast in Deception (Chronicles of Elantra Series #13) by Michelle Sagara

WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE, WHO NEEDS ENEMIES?

Private Kaylin Neya thought her home couldn’t possibly get more crowded. But when one of her housemates, Annarion, decides to undertake the Barrani Test of Name, his friends refuse to let him face his task alone—and Kaylin’s sentient home, Helen, is the only structure capable of shielding the rest of Elantra from the magnitude of their power.

Annarion and Mandoran almost caused the destruction of the High Halls once already. Add nine of their closest friends, and the danger is astronomically higher—especially since these guests are at the heart of a political firestorm. Imprisoned almost a millennium ago, their recent freedom threatens the rulership of several prominent Barrani families, and the machinations of those Lords make it almost impossible to tell friend from foe.

As political tensions ramp up, the shadows beneath the High Halls are seeking a freedom that has never been possible before. Kaylin must find a way to keep those shadows from escaping, or that freedom will destroy her city, the empire and everything she holds dear.

Not her best story. Quality of writing was same but story just didn't want to grab me unlike some of the previous stories. Felt like a setup to the next book, a filler story.

Very well written but has a disappointing ending with unanswered questions left hanging.

Sahara creates a world of dragons, Barrani, Thalani, Leontines and Aerians who have become my friends. She talks through her stories about issues of humanity: love, trust, friendship, in such a way as to give us something to ponder after we read the excellent stories. Her characters become friends, or at least some of them! I finished CAST IN DECEPTION already wishing the next book was ready to read.

The stories of Kaylin and all of her multi-racial friends and acquaintances have been a joy to read. The mythical world Ms Sagara has created is consistent and wholy believable. She has done a superb job of character development so that i could believe that I would recognize each character if i were to meet them on the streets of Elantra.

Seemed like a filler book, only there to get to the next part of the overarching story.

The Cast series has long been a favorite that I have re-read several times. I have recommended it to friends that have also fallen in love with it and this lasted installment did not disappoint. I can’t wait for the next.

Fantastic storyline and each books adds further depth to the characters. I'm never able to anticipate what comes next.

This book really advanced character development particularly Belesando. Also see more how Kaylin can now use her life experiences for others and continue to grow. Really looking forward to next installment.

Not a novel. More a novella padded in with lots of angst concerning admittedly dicey task of integrating the cohort, relationship of dragons and Barrani, etc. It's akin to sampling trays in the bakery - small bites that make you drool for more.

One more awesome story in a superb series. I particularly enjoy the continual blossoming of the characters.

I absolutely adored this latest installment. I just wish it was about 300 pages longer. I long for the days of the 1,000+ page book. (I digress) I’m glad the cohort is all together again. I can’t wait until the Consort comes to dinner. I hope the war band is sent packing. I’d love to know why the elemental water did what it did (great setup for the next arc, by the way)—and just what is the big bad that’s about to pounce on Kaylin and friends. Will Bellsudeo end up on and Emperor enforced house arrest? I don’t know. But I can’t wait to find out. Aww-inspiring job Michelle! You soooo ROCK!! (Again, I just wish it was longer.)

I devoured this I can't wait for the next book The depth of Teela's "family" is amazing. I like that we are finally learning more about them and, how Kaylin deals with all the voices in her head .

The story evolves a bit more giving you glimpses of future issues. Other books in the series have tended to bring closure to at least one of the many issues with their world. Although I liked this issue I was disappointed there wasn’t a “closure”. This time more problems were added but no resolutions. I hope the next installment is released soon & the author isn’t turning this into an ongoing soap opera.
