Chainbreaker's (European-Americans called him Blacksnake or Governor Blacksnake) war path led him to some of the bloodiest encounters on the New York and Pennsylvania frontiers, including the desperate hand-to-hand battle at Oriskany. At war's close, Chainbreaker met former adversary George Washington for treaty negotiations and became an emissary for peace to western Indian nations.
