Overview

Four-time New York Times bestselling author Gary Vaynerchuk offers new lessons and inspiration drawn from the experiences of dozens of influencers and entrepreneurs who rejected the predictable corporate path in favor of pursuing their dreams by building thriving businesses and extraordinary personal brands.

In his 2009 international bestseller Crush It, Gary insisted that a vibrant personal brand was crucial to entrepreneurial success, In Crushing It!, Gary explains why that’s even more true today, offering his unique perspective on what has changed and what principles remain timeless. He also shares stories from other entrepreneurs who have grown wealthier—and not just financially—than they ever imagined possible by following Crush It principles. The secret to their success (and Gary’s) has everything to do with their understanding of the social media platforms, and their willingness to do whatever it took to make these tools work to their utmost potential. That’s what Crushing It! teaches readers to do.

In this lively, practical, and inspiring book, Gary dissects every current major social media platform so that anyone, from a plumber to a professional ice skater, will know exactly how to amplify his or her personal brand on each. He offers both theoretical and tactical advice on how to become the biggest thing on old standbys like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat; podcast platforms like Spotify, Soundcloud, iHeartRadio, and iTunes; and other emerging platforms such as Musical.ly. For those with more experience, Crushing It! illuminates some little-known nuances and provides innovative tips and clever tweaks proven to enhance more common tried-and-true strategies.

Crushing It! is a state-of-the-art guide to building your own path to professional and financial success, but it’s not about getting rich. It’s a blueprint to living life on your own terms.

Moving through Crushing It!, by Gary Vaynerchuk, feels less like reading a book and more like having a casual conversation with a witty and down to earth marketing connoisseur. This self-made entrepreneur and millionaire explores a very trendy method of marketing oneself in the age of technology: popular social media. Getting into the nitty gritty and the fun details about how “you're going to eat sh*t for a long time” (21) during the process of building a personal brand, Vaynerchuk preaches that the only actual barrier standing between living a mediocre life and crushing it is the barrier an individual places on themselves. While it is obvious that much more goes into becoming successful doing what you love, the recurring theme is an urge to the reader to give themselves permission to take the leap of faith. Chock full of advice and inspiration to give, Vaynerchuk aims to reach a general audience of individuals who are not happy with their current life and wish to make a living- or even riches- off of doing something they enjoy. Specifically, Crushing It! is geared toward either those looking for guidance on how to do so or validation that they are on the right path already. While this could be just about anyone, he does make mention of the possible issue of time for those who are in the middle age range. That is, if they “stink at or hate what they are doing” (105), getting their original career back on track could prove to be more pressing and difficult. Therefore, those in their late teenage years up until about thirty-five are those who will likely benefit the most from what this book has to offer. And this book has more than a lot to offer. Though Crushing It! is organized into two large parts, Vaynerchuk concentrates his argument into three main points: what you need to succeed, why your excuses are invalid, and specifics on how to launch yourself on each type of social media platform. Once a prospective marketer gives themselves the permission to commit and trust the process, what truly matters is their intent, authenticity, passion, patience, speed, work and attention (30). With these key ingredients and the ability to understand your audience, he attests that the quality content and connections necessary for one’s brand to flourish and transcend platforms can be attained. While this may seem simple, Vaynerchuk gets real about the hustle as well as the excuses, namely being afraid of failure, of wasting time or of seeming vain. He eloquently defines these as “bullsh*t” (98). He admits that discipline and constant hard work, such as producing content and reaching out to collaborators, is crucial. He also breaks the news that there will be no time for leisure, including as little as watching YouTube or going to the movies, which seems to be an overwhelming and unrealistic overestimate of the majority of people. However, he implores his reader not to be discouraged, as the toil and tedious effort will be worth the suffering. To back his claim of the rewarding feelings, he gives ample and appropriate support through written testimonies where the reader is able to “hear the stories of people who were scared, just like [them]. Who had obligations just like [them]... Yet, they did it anyway and reaped the rewards” (10). After every single topic discussed in the book, Vaynerchuk follows it with real life stories of people who have taken advice from his previous book, Crush It, and are now crushing it themselves.

I'm a huge fan on GaryVee. I ask his other book #AskGaryVee on my night stand. I watch all his stuff and follow all his social media. I did have a little challenge trying to find this book at Barnes & Noble but one of the staff helped me out and BOOM! I got it.

You better be ready for this book when you sit down with it. There is a fair amount of motivational talk, short stories from others who’ve found success after applying the Crush It! principles from Gary’s 2009 book. But if you need motivation to get started, buy this book, set it aside, then pick it up when you’re ready to GO. This book is chock-full of practical advice on reaching your highest potential on the various social media platforms. Gary Vaynerchuk not only teaches you how to succeed, but equally important, how to fail and move on. If you’re ready to get going, build your brand, and dive in, this is your book. If I had one criticism, I could have done with fewer testimonials and more Gary. A quick read, you’ll be pumped to ramp up your presence and build your business after…no, WHILE reading this book. Highly recommended for anyone who’s ready to make it happen yesterday.

I've been listening to Gary on his podcast (GaryVee Audio Experience) for about a month now, and the amount of knowledge, insight, and value that he has brought to my life was so much that I felt I needed to go out and buy 2 copies of his book. Honestly if I had the finances I would have bought more. I kept 1 copy and another I gave to my branch leader to read and asked her to pass it down, after she has finished, to someone in our office that will benefit from this. Gary gives away so much free content through different social media platforms, that I feel my $50 spent on the 2 books is well worth it. What A Deal :) btw went out for the first time in many many years to Barnes & Noble to purchase it first thing in the morning.

Gary Vee does it again! If there is one thing you can count on is, this man is current. He has spent over 2 decades listening to the game, understanding industry dynamics, adapting to current trends and staying ahead of the curve. If you own a business, plan on starting a business or just want to know how to connect better with your audience, get this book!

I don't usually read two books from the same author in a row but this month I had to make an exception. I had just heard about Jab, Jab, Jab Right Hook a couple weeks before Chrushing It! came out. I had to check it out. It was more than worth my time. Thanks Gary for taking the time to get this out to the world. I've learned a ton about the mindset needed to make a real impact for my own business and for my clients.
