They call me a slut. Maybe I am.
Sometimes I do things I despise.
Sometimes men take without asking.

But I have a musical gift, only a year left of high school, and a plan.
With one obstacle.

Emeric Marceaux doesn't just take.
He seizes my will power and bangs it like a dark note.
When he commands me to play, I want to give him everything.
I kneel for his punishments, tremble for his touch, and risk it all for our stolen moments.

He's my obsession, my master, my music.
And my teacher.

When she ran away, she traveled fourteen countries across five continents, attended three universities, and married the vocalist of her favorite rock band.

"The tempo of our breaths. The drum of our heartbeats. The crackle in the air. The exquisite cadence pulses through me, awakening sensations I’ve never felt, composing a melody I’ve never heard. Our hypnotic, dark notes." When this book was recommended to me, I already knew I liked Pam Godwin as an author. I already knew I liked a bit of taboo with my romance. I already knew I liked a bit of dark (okay, a lot of dark) with my romance. What I wasn't prepared for was how absolutely beautiful this dark, taboo, mostly swept under the rug subject would be. The quote above illustrates just how beautiful Pam's words can be even when writing about something that most would cringe about. Even when she wrote about the total dominance and super steamy scenes, it was lyrical and musical. You could feel the heart beats that "vibed". Amazing read!

Age is not a measurement of life experience. Growing up in the poorest areas forces maturity early when survival depends on developing a toughness and desire to survive. Ivory is a survivor with a plan to escape the slums with the skill she wields at a keyboard and the resiliance to survive the necessary evils in her life. Her ability for goodness and creating beauty while walking among horror had me cheering for her. The risks they take for love had me fearing everything would fall apart but I was so happy at the end. If you love music and risky dominant men then give this a read.

I loved it, it over took me and I set life aside to read it once I started.... and then I had to sit back and absorb it all before I could think about reviewing. This book was too good to not review though, so I had to come back for it! These characters, their story, it kicks you in the gut. That being said, the faint of heart need to stay away, there are things those of us who like the dark, twisted or painful, carry on. It skirts all sorts of lines, and the backstory definitely crosses them, but it shaped and guides our heroine and is so essential. She had a good life, then it all fell apart, and is still cracking, when our hero steps into the scene From the first contact, he knew it was wrong, he knew he couldn't have her, but he was too far gone from the beginning. While he is trying to figure things out, she is still trying to survive. The deeper he delves, the more he knows, he can't stay away. He has to have her, and his intentions are blurry, but it goes with it and ignores his inner warnings There are so many things that can go wrong, and they do, with some painful consequences for them both. Their only saving grace is that they have each other, and work through their pain, their anguish, together. Our hero pulls it together in the end, and our heroine comes out as her own person and stronger than ever The warning, the real warning, is that this book will leave you with a HUGE book hangover! It has been two weeks and I am still a little shaky from it, it left that much of an impact. Ivory broke my heart, with every piece of her life she lived, with everything she revealed, she broke my heart. But through all that, her strength and drive that kept her going, that had me in awe. It also had me completely on board with Emeric's anger and frustration, his lashing out and complete coddling of her whenever he could Needless to say, I was wiped out by the book and loved every word of it

One of the very few books that I've felt compelled to give 5 stars. Dark Notes deserves more credit and recognition!

A page turner indeed. Taboo subject matter (teacher - student ) interactions. But if your ok with the taboo aside, it sizzles. A don't miss and I have found a new author

Scary, sad, sweet and sizzling hot, all rolled into one great book. Definitely not the usual. I don't normally enjoy books with younger women, this is such an exception. You'll love it!

I really enjoyed this book. I instantly fell for Ivory and Emeric and was sucked into their story. I find it ironic that this was the most adult book I've read in awhile and it's main character was a child (calm down peeps...she's a very mature 17 y/o). Not the typical teacher/student story.

Very few authors can pull off visceral like Pam Godwin. You feel, taste, smell, see, experience, everything in her stories. So, so good. I related to both characters in ways that made me squirm, but that also made me cheer them on all the more.

I was quickly engrossed in the story and couldn't put it down. Risky, heart breaking, and so many emotions just thinking of the situations these to were put in. Badass in there too. Loved it!

As soon as I saw that Ms. Godwin had a new book coming out, I couldn't wait to read it and when I saw that it was a student/teacher romance I got even more excited! I love a good forbidden romance, but much like the elegant, beautiful, dark cover, the story reflected that same beauty, elegance, and darkness. Dark Notes was one outstanding read and I wholeheartedly looooved it! I didn't know what to expect of Ivory going in, but I doubt any would have mattered in the end because I loved Ivory and no expectation would have done her justice. She's so strong and with all the darkness that has touched her and invaded her mind, her heart is still mostly light and pure and good. Ivory is not like any other seventeen-year-old girl or any girl for that matter - she's mature and driven, sweet and innocent, sassy and passionate - she's just her own person and I absolutely loved her. Ivory is a wonderful heroine and you'll be happy to have known her. I've always loved Pam Godwin's heroes, they've been some of my favorites, and Emeric was no different - I just loved that man! He, of course, has the whole dominant, bossy alpha thing down with all the possessive, protectiveness that goes with it that I love - like really love - but what I loved even more than all those hot, delicious qualities, was the way Emeric feels about Ivory. He's so devoted to her and it's obvious how much he loves her. He's supportive, understanding, patient, and makes you feel warm and safe. Emeric is wonderful and he completely stole my heart! Dark Notes might be a forbidden love story between a teacher and a student, but it didn't feel like Emeric and Ivory's relationship was forbidden. Everything about it and them was right and beautiful, powerful and passionate, and real and true. They were just always meant to be and I fell in love with their love story. Dark Notes was a beautiful, seductive, heartbreaking, but also an exceptional, heartwarming story and one my favorite, best reads of the year! Dark Notes is a standalone, it's told from Emeric and Ivory's POV, and they get a wonderful happily-ever-after ending! ~ Sonja, 5 Stars

Wow, just breathtakingly wow! Never have I read a book, that I want to forget so I can't read all over again so quickly. It was such a darkly eloquent written book about forbidden love, every word draws you into this unique story that's more than just love. Ivory is a seventeen year who doesn't have the best home life, but that doesn't stop her trying to achiever her ambitions of completing a stellar senior year at Le Moyne's a elite performing acts high school. She's never quite fitted in with her peers or with the academy as she lacks the financial prowess as the other students, but it doesn't stop her being the best pianist. Ivory may not have the material things or even unconditional love, but it doesn't stop her from being a beautiful, defiant, resilient, witty girl, with nothing to lose. In steps the new younger than normal teacher Mr. Marceaux, he's dominant, cocky, and more importantly he's confidant with his hot as hell good looks, he's a musical genius. He's taken the job due to circumstances from his last teaching job. The Sparks and attraction flies when Ivory and Mr. Marceaux meet but it's forbidden,he's ten years her senior plus he's her teacher, but try as he might Emeric can no longer deny Ivory and they give into temptation. This relationship is different from all others that Ivory has had and this one is built on trust, control and love. I loved the fact that Ivory craved more than material things, she wanted things that didn't cost monetary value and she craved belonging and love. Emeric was only to happy to provide it all, it was more than lust it was everything,it was more than "teacher and student, a Dom and submissive, a man and woman." - "We're a timeless concerto". Emeric was possessive loveable and damn hot and Ivory was his irrevocably from the first meeting,it was just such a well written tale a love, one of which I fell more in love with as the words flowed on, the words just consumed you and left you feeling a hum of satisfaction. Plus, the sex is super hot! "I'm his Ivory, and he's my darkest note" If I could have given it more stars I would have, I fell totally in love with this beautiful forbidden love story, I received this book in return for my honest opinion and I think you should read it immediately.

4 1/2 stars!! I haven't read a student/teacher romance before, so I was a little hesitant about starting Dark Notes, but am I glad I dived in. I really enjoyed this book. So many times I just wanted to reach through the pages and give Ivory a big hug and say I'm so sorry for the horrible stuff that you had happen to you. The 4 1/2 STARS and not 5 stars was mainly because Emeric's inner thoughts about Ivory come off a little "creepy" in the beginning to me, but that icky feeling dissipated the more I read. I also thought that the ending was just a tad unrealistic. I won't say anything more on that because it would be a spoiler. Overall I thought Ivory and Emeric make great music together. They are each others bright light in their dark worlds.
