Darker Things (The Lockman Chronicles, #1) by Rob Cornell

It started with a dead name… Craig Lockman.

No one had called him that in fifteen years.

Not since his days at the Agency. Not since he was trained to kill creatures that were supposed to exist only in nightmares.

Yet the teenage girl on his doorstep not only knows his real name, she claims she's his daughter.

Before Lockman can learn how the girl found him, he's attacked by a black-ops team of assassins. But these aren't ordinary killers--they're heavily armed vampires sent by his most hated enemy.

Forced on the run, Lockman protects his daughter from an onslaught of horrors while searching for who betrayed him and why. The investigation leads him to Detroit, where he unwittingly sets a plan into motion that could trigger a paranormal apocalypse and cost him his soul.

Darker Things presents a new breed of urban fantasy, paced like a thriller and filled with gritty action. "Imagine if James Patterson wrote about vampires." -- Will Entrekin, author of The Prodigal Hour.

About the Author

An accidental nomad, Rob Cornell grew up in suburban Detroit, then spent five years living in Los Angeles before moving to Chicago to receive a BA in Fiction Writing from Columbia College. He has traveled full circle, now living in rural southeast Michigan with his wife, two kids, and dog, Kinsey—named after Sue Grafton’s famous detective.

In between moving and writing, he’s worked all manner of odd jobs, including lead singer for an acoustic cover band and a three-day stint as assistant to a movie producer after which he quit because the producer was a nut job.

DARKER THINGS starts with an explosive opening. Craig Lockman finds out he has a teenage daughter. That same daughter has unwittingly led commando vampires to his door. Lockman accepts Jessie immediately, never questioning whether she really is his daughter. By the time they escape the vampires a few pages later, they are already solidly a team. They are very appealing characters--Lockman tries his hardest to be tough while Jessie completely flummoxes him by being herself. The two of them battle vampires and other creatures of the night in a cross-country chase that takes them from California to Detroit and forces Lockman to examine a past he thought he left behind. DARKER THINGS is a true cross-genre novel, combining the best of thriller and horror conventions while being a slave to neither. If I had to pick one, I would call it a thriller because of the pacing. The heroes are rarely out of danger for long and the reader is breathless while pages fly. While it's a foregone conclusion that Lockman will vanquish evil and win back the love of his life, I was constantly guessing how it would happen through the book's many twists. The reading experience was smooth, with only a few editing hiccups. (Twice the author used the word "conscious" when he meant "conscience.") Overall, there were no major problems to pull me out of a fast-paced, enjoyable read.

Has vampires, check. Has compelling relationship and characters, check. Has fast-moving plot/action, check. I was really excited to read this book and then discovered that the author was turned down by regular publishing because of it's genre-bending nature. I love genre-benders! I like his writing and will be checking out his other books!

I was surprised this book was as great as it was! A supernatural thriller that kept my attention! Although this author is no King or Koontz, he still managed to tell a crazy story. Worth reading!

Darker Things is a wonderful read, well written and planned out. The storyline is gripping and exciting, and the characters were believable and honest without being too dramatic or false. Can't wait to read more in the series!

The proof reader did not do a good job. Lots of misspelled words and sentences, that you had to figure out what words should of been in it. Otherwise ok story.

I bought this book because Rob Cornell followed me on Twitter, and I thought I would check out his work. I thought Darker Things sounded intriguing, so I took a chance on an author unknown to me. I was NOT disappointed. This book is filled with adventure, scary paranormal creatures, and some really nasty humans, with a little bit of emotional baggage thrown in. This thriller held me captive through the whole story, and I was really sorry to see it end. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Rob Cornell does a good job guiding us through the premise of this book, presumably the first in a series called The Lockman Chronicles. I thought it was an interesting take on the whole supernatural "genre", for lack of a better word, and was drawn into the story immediately by the strong action and questions raised in the prologue/preface. As Alice said, "curiouser and curiouser!" The action was good, but didn't get in the way of the story's development (at least to me). The teenager in the book was a pain-in-the-ass, but what teenager isn't? Realistically written, to my mind. Nothing offensive, and I didn't find myself skipping pages to get to the good parts, which is always a litmus test for me for an author I haven't read before. There were a few mistakes in word choice (e.g. a car has brakes, not breaks) and the occasional other grammar or punctuation slip, and I would've liked to have seen a table of contents built into the book, but overall, this was a well-edited and even more importantly, well-written, story. It's a good length for a novel, and for $2.99, you can't beat the value. I recommend this book for a good horror/suspense read with a unique take on the idea of the supernatural and magic, and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

3.5 stars. Mostly solid read, a little akin to Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, only darker; Harry with a (retired) badge and no magical powers. Will definitely read more.

Captures you right from the beginning to the end. Has twists and turns so it keeps you reading. Recommend to all mystery/syfy readers. Looking forward to reading more with these characters.

I enjoyedthe book. It's a good story with likeable characters. There is a few places that need editing but it didn't take away from the story. I would read the other books in this series.

Mr. Cornell introduces us to Craig Lockman, and what a character he is.  A story written with humor, sarcastic dialogue, and good character chemistry that you won’t want to put down.  An author to keep an eye on.

This book was paranormal. It has all kinds if monsters in it. All are trying to fight and eat each other. Including the humans. It is extremely bloody with blood, guts and gore, beheadings and other types of enforced death and torture, I had never even thought of. No sex or religion. This book was just horrible. The editing was good and the length was nice. Those are the good things about this disturbing book. AD
