Depravity: A Beauty and the Beast Retelling by M. J. Haag

Sixteen year old Benella is concerned with two things–avoiding the two village boys who torment her and scrounging for food to help feed her family. Unfortunately, the best wild fruit and vegetables are near the walls of the estate, a dark misty place inhabited by an unforgiving beast.

When her tormentors lock her behind the massive gates, Benella knows her fate is sealed. Yet, the fate isn’t one she expects. Her encounter with the beast starts a bizarre cycle of bargaining for her freedom, a freedom the beast seems determined to see her lose.

A classic fairy tale with a new twist, the Beauty and the Beast saga begins with Depravity.

Intended for adult readers only due to sexual situations, violence (attempted rape), and moderate language.

To say I loved this new retelling of Beauty and the Beast is an understatement. I've always loved fairy tales so when I stumbled across this book I immediately purchased it and started reading it. Two chapters in and I knew that I just had to share it on my blog. This author immediately captivates you in her magical and intriguing web with a well paced story line and filled with characters who are so in depth that you find yourself feeling like you know them on a personal level. Her imagination and perception of how this story should really be told is completely outstanding and this book deserves way more than five stars. I was completely consumed with this fascinating tale and I know that you will too. Please note that this retelling is for mature audiences only.

A wonderful new twist on a tale as old as time! 4.5 stars out of 5.0!  You may have noticed a trend in books these days; retelling of some of the oldest stories out there, whether fairy tales, Shakespeare or fables, they all take a little or a lot from the original material and spin a new novel for readers to enjoy. M.J. Haag keeps a lot of the feel of the original Beauty and the Beast but she definitely spins this tale in a way that is all her own! This book is dark, mature and completely intriguing! I immediately was drawn into the world building. Depravity gives us a good vision of what early century life might feel like, especially the division of the classes. Benella lives in a small cottage in a small town with her father and 2 older sisters. They are poor and work is rare. Benella seems to be the only one capable of hunting and scavenging for food to help keep her family from starving, even at 16 years old. We also discover that there are a couple of village boys who give her a hard time and she winds up being bullied into the enchanted Estate that is guarded by the unmerciful Beast. Yes, times were different, and 16 is an acceptable age to be married off and the boys and men of the village are all banging down her door - so to speak - so Benella literally has to run and hide at the one place she has found a tiny form of sanctuary, the Beast's estate. This is where Benella's innocence is really adorable and we grow to despise her sisters & the villagers and love Benella! She is so strong and willing to accept her circumstances and do whatever it takes to help better the lives of her family, even her 2 ungrateful sisters. I highly recommend Depravity! This is part 1 in a 3 part serial release, but this installment is almost a full length novel at almost 200 pages and you will be hooked and dying for part 2, Deceit, which releases soon! I was immersed in this book and was so sad when it ended especially since it ended in a cliffhanger, which is totally expected of a serial release, but luckily we don't have to wait too long! This is the first adult release from the YA paranormal expert Melissa Haag, so she is released this series under a pseudonym of M.J. Haag! I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

For Adults ONLY! It was a dark and sad (but great)book. I have never read a Beauty and the Beast book before but I really enjoyed this one. I really enjoyed reading about this sad world where the people are doing what they need to in order to survive. I love how strong the main character is. Haag, Always has such wonderful, smart resourceful women in her stories! It is one of the many reason why I love all of her book!

A riveting and compelling departure from Melissa Haag's other works. Once I start one of Melissa's books, I am consumed by her characters and storyline, and this book was no different. I love Depravity and have really enjoyed my two read throughs. The story follows Benella, her father, and her two sisters. The family is poor, and Benella helps to provide food that she hunts for, from an enchanted estate that is nearby. The beast, who guards the estate, desires payment from her for the things she has taken. I was intrigued by Benella; she is sweet, kind, and gracious, yet stubborn, hard working and sometimes blunt. The sisters and the father; I didn't care for so much. The father is kind, but very passive, and the sisters are self-centered, selfish, and spiteful. I felt very angry on Benella's behalf, because of their treatment of her. Another thing I love about this book is the pace. I was surprised to find that this book is only 186 pages. It reads like a much longer book. There is a lot of material and action packed into the pages (this is just Part 1), but I didn't feel like the storyline was rushed at all. The relationship between Benella and the beast is very gradual. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. This is a much darker and more twisted tale than what Melissa usually delivers, but it is superbly written, as all her other novels are. Thank you, Melissa for another fabulous book!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I am SO glad! I am in LOVE with this enchanting, imaginative retelling of the classic story of Beauty and the Beast. This story is well-written, the characters are complex and the book is an absolute page turner. Once I started this read, I could not stop. I was drawn into Benella’s story and found her life, and family dynamics, completely fascinating. The connection between her and the Beast is captivating, even though the Beast is a slightly disturbing character who has much to learn from Benella. The book is engrossing and the ending leaves me screaming for more. I wish Part 2 was already here!

It was an interesting read but I wish that it was a little bit more background information on why certain characters treated Benella in such a way. Other than that I intrigued to find out what happens next in this line of books.

134 pages. This was a free book and a good retelling of the Beauty & Beast fairy tale. It is dark but I assumed true love wins as it does in the fairy tale. Alas, there are two more books to purchase to find out. I would highly recommend this book if it was complete. However, it is free. So, read the first book and decide if you like it enough to buy the other two and find out if they live hapily ever after.

This was such a good read! The story flowed at an excellent pace and the characters felt fleshed out; not 2D. Excellent retelling of beauty and the beast.
