This book was well written and researched - a book of substance. I knew about and had briefly studied the Highland Clearences in college, even visiting Scotlanx, but I never truly imagined and appreciated the emotional turmoil and the betrayl. I particularly liked the psychological awareness and treatment. Highly recommend. This is a much more serious, worthy book than the others I've read by Kelly. Nicely balanced - no sex but attraction/passion; not religious but realistic depictions of faith.

In this day and age, where lots if romance novels are a thin plot to hold together sex scenes, this book tells a tale if compassion, history, and real abiding love. Tge writing is strong and the story is so good tgat you will probably cry a time or two. It is a truly satisfying read.

I love the way Carla Kelly tells stories with characters that are real and believable. I learned a new aspect of the history of Scotland and the impact on the people who lived there. I couldn't help but feel for Doug and Olive who had their hands full but still did everything they could to serve their community and neighbors, solve problems, and put out fires. One of my favorites by this author!
