A quick note: This book does have darker themes, and falls under dark romance/dark erotica genre. With that said, the encounters between the two main characters IS CONSENTUAL! Gabriel Louw has been trained from a very young age that if you don’t strike at your victims, you become the victim. That’s not acceptable in the world he lives in. He’s had to be the The Breaker. The one man you don’t want to hunt you down should you owe the family any type of money. You don’t pay it back, The Breaker will make an example out of you. He shows no mercy…..don’t be scared of the dark, be scared of The Breaker who lives in the dark….. Valentina Haynes has lived a life of chaos from an early age. Her family's involvement in the darker criminal activities and groups around them made her cautious. She isn’t oblivious to the fact that with this comes certain promises and expectations. She’s endured a lot, been through too much at her young age. She’s determined to make it different and to live a better life. Unfortunately for her, tragedy strikes her family. In the aftermath she has to move forward…...but what happens next may ruin her life…. Charlie was left with damages that hinder his ability to live a normal life. Because of that, people take advantage of him. Regardless of Val’s intentions to keep them safe, he unknowingly walks into the darkness.Gabriel is sent in by his vindictive mother to “take care” of the debt. Gabriel trains her body to crave his, to accept his darkness and to willingly come to him. Its through their dark trysts that he takes things to a new level to keep her forever. Regardless of his mother's insistence that she be dealt with finality, he will bind her to him in every way he can. The truth starts to rain down them in showers. How is the Louw family connected with the Haynes family? Who shares a past with them all that threatens to come to life and really set a tailspin of drama? Who is going to survive? It’s hard to not give away more!!!! I was blown away by the raw emotions. I wish I could break down everything without giving away too much or writing a novel in return! Charmaine really showed her intense creativity in this phenomenal book. I’m not one for darker romance/erotica usually. However, when it's written in such a way Charmaine did, it had me hooked. Sreiously, I encourage you to read this with an OPEN mind and look beyond just the first layer. You’ll be surprised by how much you learn about them. I wish I could give it a gazillion stars!

I loved reading the exciting and intriguing first book in The Loan Shark Duet series. Gabriel, the enforcer for the mob, is suppose to kill Valentina and her brother, Charlie. Gabriel wants Valentina for himself and makes a deal. Valentina will do anything to save her brother's life and becomes Gabriel's property. Valentina tries keeping up with her vet studies, cleaning the mansion, waiting on Gabriel and his mom, the mafia boss, Gabriel's sex slave, seeing her brother and best friend on the weekends, but can't keep up with her dreams to become a vet. Valentina is starting to fall in love with her captor. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written and engaging story a reader literally cannot stop reading from beginning to end and full of anticipation for the second book in the series.

Life has a way of not doing what you want. Oh sure things can "work out" but really being property to "The Breaker" isn't quite what most have in mind. Charmaine Pauls has you from the beginning. A tense situation and your protective side flairs up faster than you can say 400 hundred thousand rand. Btw, I have no idea how much money that is but I assume a lot. Playing on your sympathies, you are forced into the role. You wouldn't choose anything else. Or at least I wouldn't. It's so hard not to fall for...well, I will keep that part to myself. But it's hot, consuming, and so very unfinished. You will get to the end and want to scream in frustration. Good thing book two comes out in a month!

Dubious... Wow, this book takes you on an interesting journey! This Beauty and the Beast type tale takes you along an in-depth gritty and darker ride full of emotion! What a page turner! I stayed up really late to see how things would turn out! I was pulled into Valentina and Gabriel's story! I can not wait to see what unfolds in book 2!!! I am really looking forward to it!

5 Dubious Stars! Charmaine Pauls’ Dubious completely took me by surprise. It’s a blending of morally gray actions in murky situations with this diabolical eroticism that sweeps you right in. I need the conclusion to this…pronto! Gabriel is a loan shark in an area where crime rules the day. He’s one of the top dogs and his assignment? Take out a woman and her brother who owe his family money. But one look at the woman in question has Gabriel defying his family’s wishes and taking the woman as his own. Valentina finds herself in an untenable situation when her brother racks up more debt than she can pay. She agrees to Gabriel’s demand—working as his maid and as anything else he requires. She only needs to last nine years… But the forced pleasure he puts on her complicates everything Valentina thought she knew. First, the book is set in South Africa. I really enjoyed that. The area Valentina lives in is fraught with corruptness, danger, and savagery. Valentina, however, is willing to do whatever it takes to get her and brother out of there. Valentina has a core of steel, and I admired the hell out of this woman. She meets fire with fire, and even though her choices are slim, they’re very much still her choices and she owns them. Now, Gabriel. He’s one complication after another. Sometimes, I despised him and others, I really felt for this guy. I was a big bleeding heart reading this novel, and I couldn’t step away. There’s a cliffhanger (of course), and it’s so good I was panting for the next. I’m so happy that both parts are releasing close to the other because dang…I need it. Be aware that there is forced seduction. There are moments are dubious consent, but it’s tempered and wrapped up in Valentina and Gabriel’s POV in such a way that you’re pulled like a rubber band this way and that. If you’re wanting a read that takes on and tests boundaries, one that colors outside the lines and makes us question the right and wrong of it all as well as the decisions we make for those we love—for what we protect—than you’ll need to run for this book. Deliciously dark, inevitably erotic, and heart-wrenchingly enthralling, Dubious keeps your adrenaline pumping all the way through.

You know, I read some glowing reviews before reading this. I read where this was an unexpected read and yet I’m still kind of shocked with how much this story affected me. Valentina just breaks my heart. The unfairness of everything she has had to endure and still comes out fighting. Most people would have broken long before. But the biggest surprise? Gabriel. The fact that this author took an evil man who does unspeakable things to people and made me care about him just astounds me. The obsession. The need for love in such a bleak world. The good hidden behind the evil. Even the side characters were a surprise. The author showed us a little glimpse into the brutality of these men and then gives us the humane side of them. How can people have such opposing sides is fascinating. The complexity to all the characters made for a fascinating read. I was so wrapped up in this book, I completely ignored life. If you can handle dark or triggers such as rape and physical violence, you really should check this book out. It does end on a cliffhanger, but you won’t have to wait long for the next book. Personally, I can’t wait to see how such an impossible situation is going to turn out. ARC provided by NetGalley.

I've always been a lover of Charmaine Pauls novels but Dubious took her writing to a next level. I loved it. This book was dark and at times disturbing, yet to me it did not read as a completely dark depraved novel, as Charmaine took us on a journey with Gabriel and Valentina. From property to sex toy, we see how Gabriel slowly begins to fall in love with Valentina in spite of the fact that he is supposed to eventually kill her. This twisted novel will leave you with a range of emotions. From anger to sadness to concern you will love every moment of it. The cliff hanger ending will have you stunned. Dubious is book 1 in the Loan Shark Duet. With well-developed complex characters, a fascinating but troubled story-line, steamy scenes and a range of amazing supporting characters, this novel will have you hooked until the end, will leave you wondering what just happened and have you anxiously awaiting what comes next. This page-turner was a riveting read and I can't wait to begin part 2 in this series. **I Voluntarily reviewed and ARC of this novel.**

have never read any of Charmaine Pauls books and now I wish I had. Dubious leaves you wanting so much more and makes you impatient for the second instalment. Having read a number of gangster/mobster books, I started this wondering what to expect but the story captivates and guides you through the traumatic life of Valentina and her brother Charlie. Valentina is a determined character who has many secrets but the love of her brother and a quirk of fate leads her in to the path of Gabriel a loan shark. Valentina must pick up the debts of her brain damaged brother and Gabriel expects her to pay. What transpires is a heart racing page turner. The scenes between Gabriel and Valentina will leave you fanning yourself and championing Valentina's struggle. The dynamics between Gabriel and his mother Magda have you on edge with an air of unpredictability. And there is more to come from Gabriels' ex and his daughter. You really do need to read this book. 5 incredible stars
