Overview

From Renee Bernard comes the latest gem in her series of seductive gentlemen--and the tempting women who entice them...
Like all the Jaded Gentlemen, Dr. Rowan West may have his secrets but he's done his best to forgive the ghosts of his past and move on with his life. Until the beautiful Miss Gayle Renshaw appears on his doorstep, jeopardizing his medical practice, his reputation and, worst of all his heart.

In her desperation to become a doctor, Gayle uses what she knows of Rowan's fiance's mysterious death to blackmail him into taking her on as an apprentice. With his back against the wall, Rowan agrees, but quickly discovers that Gayle isn't as heartless as she seems. Captivated by his tenacious and brilliant new student, Rowan finds himself surrendering to temptation, just as the enemies of the Jaded start to encroach. Now, with both their lives threatened, Rowan may be forced to give up the woman he loves to save her life...

"Sensuality fairly steams from Bernard's writing. This luscious tale will enthrall you. Enjoy!" -- Sabrina Jeffries, New York Times bestselling author

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bernard's third Jaded Gentleman Victorian romance (after Revenge Wears Rubies and Seduction Wears Sapphires) sizzles as a pioneering woman finds love while pursuing her life's ambition. Gayle Renshaw travels to London to become the apprentice of Dr. Rowan West, a renowned physician. Rowan assumed his new apprentice was a man, but he reluctantly agrees to take Gayle on, hoping she will quit after being confronted with his most challenging cases. As Gayle thrives under Rowan's tutelage, their relationship crosses the line from professional into personal. Sensuality fills the pages as Gayle must decide how to profess her love for Rowan without harming her career. An intriguing suspense subplot adds substance and dimension, as does the departure from the typical historical focus on the nobility. (Sept.)

Readers of historical romance are about to be delighted, because Renee Bernard has just released the latest installment of her Jaded Gentlemen series, Ecstasy Wears Emeralds. This title, the third part in the series, gives us an account of Dr. Rowan West and his struggle with a young woman who appears at his doorstep one day demanding an apprenticeship. He realizes the risks to his career and reputation that such a scenario might pose, but he fails to recognize the potential danger to his heart. Miss Gayle Renshaw, the demanding and aggressive, but quite intelligent woman at the center of the novel, has a major advantage in the knowledge she keeps of Rowan's fiancee and her mysterious disappearance. Now, with the threat of blackmail hanging over his head, Rowan has no choice but to oblige the persistent young lady. Of course, Gayle might not turn out to be as heartless as she seems initially... ...Temptation is powerful, but the will to defend and protect is even greater. With the enemies of the Jaded Gentlemen closing in on them both, Rowan must figure out how to save the woman he now loves. But saving her life might mean giving her up entirely. Find out what happens to a strange and powerful new romance in Ecstasy Wears Emeralds. Bernard, best known for her historical fiction work, invites you to join her characters in mid-nineteenth century London, the setting for this story. She possesses a strong and unique voice in her writing and she portrays well-developed female characters who tend to be distinct from the more typical women in historical fiction, especially when it comes to the romance genre. Look for Bernard's Ecstasy Wears Emeralds, available in book stores now and ideal for any avid reader of sensual romance, specifically historical romance. For anyone unfamiliar with Bernard's previous work, her stories will have appeal for anyone who enjoys fiction with elements of spicy intimacy and an intriguing sense of depth.

In 1859 in London, Gayle Renshaw wants to become a doctor but females are not accepted as trainees. She extorts Dr. Rowan West to accept her as his apprentice-assistant or she will expose secrets of his that will destroy his practice. He had originally thought she was a man when they corresponded but reluctantly agrees to train her in return for her silence over the matter of the death of his fiancée. Rowan plans to run off the feisty female by overwhelming her with work and study as he treats her like he would a male assistant. Instead of driving her out of the city as he refuses to ease off of her because of gender, she thrives. Soon Rowan respects his diligent conscientious assistant while she admires his treatment of her as if she was a man. However, she is also attracted to her mentor and him to her. When his enemies threaten his beloved Gayle, he tries to drive her away, but she is even more obstinate than when they first met as now she is a woman in love. The third Jaded Gentleman Victorian romance (see Revenge Wears Rubies and Seduction Wears Sapphires) is a superb historical that showcases a suffragette pursing her professional ambition while falling in love. Rowan is ahead of his times as he treats her as if she is a male apprentice; that is until his admiration turns to attraction and desire. Gayle walks the thin line between career goals and love. Fans will enjoy this deep, still timely today, nineteenth century romance as the mentor and the mentee find respect and love. Harriet Klausner

This book had the potential to be a very good read. Instead, it left me scratching me head wondering why I bothered. The author could have taken this so much further. The only two characters that had any real character development were the doctor and his apprentice, and even they were weak. The sub-plot was mentioned briefly, but never fully explained and the reason for it left out as if either forgotten or undeveloped. Certainly wouldn't bother with anything else by this author.

This is the third book in the Jaded series. We meet Dr. Rowan West. He has a young lady named Gayle who shows up wanting to be his apprentice and threatens Rowan with his dark past. I really enjoyed this book. One scene Gayle has let something burn over in the lab and she is under the table trying to get it up. She was sure Rowan would be mad. He comes in looks under the table and asked if she was alright. Then he asks her to tell him the main arties of the forearm and hand. After she tells him he says good and slaps the table and goes down to his office. Again there is sex scenes and might not be for everyone. I highly recommend this series.

Flows along with the previous stories about The Jaded. Here is a heroine who is smart--really smart and Rowan is just the type of man who can enjoy someone with her intelligence. Gayle was a little too independent but I did like the scientific aspects of the story.

Enjoyed the entire set. Tastefully written

Story was very entertaining at times and other times bit slow. The sex scenes too much and a bit overdone. It was a bit confusing at times because of not knowing the back story of the Jaded. Maybe the books have to be read in order. This is the only one I have.

Great read about early women' s choices in medicine. I hadn't read the earlier stories in the series, and it wasn't necessay. The doctor's choices weren't necessarily the ones everyone would make, but he established his integrity with his new apprentice. She had her own issues with integrity, standing up for her beliefs and taking risks to have the life she wanted. A different subject and well handled with a mystery threaded through the series.

This book was just okay for me. Nothing outstanding, just quiet, predictable read.

Characters with well defined personalities fill this interesting narrative with passion, intelligence and humor. The scenes are easy to picture and experience. More entertaining than a good movie with some painless history lessons to boot.
