Mit Ivan Illich verbindet Fromm eine langjährige Freundschaft, entstanden aus der Nachbarschaft des von Illich aufgebauten Dokumentationszentrum CIDOC und Fromms Haus in Cuernavaca in Mexiko. Trotz zum Teil deutlich anderen Positionen Fromms währte die Freundschaft bis zu Fromms Lebensende. Illich gestaltete 1980 beim Tod von Fromm die Kremationsfeier in Bellinzona und machte dabei deutlich, dass ein radikaler Humanismus sie verband.
