El Alcázar de Sevilla es uno de los palacios reales más antiguos y venerados de Europa y una de las mayores joyas arquitectónicas de Sevilla.

La escritora Cecilia Böhl de Faber quedó impresionada por la belleza y la historia de este monumento y le dedicó, bajo el seudónimo de Fernán Caballero, un artículo a modo de presentación. Se impuso el difícil objetivo de describir el alcázar, pero no desde una perspectiva histórica o artística, sino de retratarlo a modo de homenaje, como una oda en prosa.
