P. is a professional philosopher whose Parliamentary seat allows him to observe real-life politics after having spent so much of his life studying its theory, but he soon realizes that the realpolitik hardly corresponds to his preconceived notions of politics. His only ally in negotiating this disheartening conundrum is his alter ego, the ghost, with whom he spends the duration of this book discussing the tensions and maladjustments brought about by this contrast.
