This book, "El Zarco" is a story written in Spanish and in prose in the 19th century. The writer, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano based his novel in episodes from the history of Mexico that took place between 1861 and 1863 even though the novel was published seven years after his death, until 1900 or so. I gave 5 stars to this book for many reasons; the reading flows in a very pleasant and exquisite way. The story is fun, interesting and captivating. This book by itself forms now part of the "Public Domain" because it's been considered already and for a long time a jewel from the Mexican literature. It all takes place in the troubled years after the civil war in Mexico, in the south central part where the country was infested with bandits and robbers that used to kidnap torture and kill the rich and wealthy of that time. The author describes the place and the characters in such a simple and splendid way that we can actually learn and get a very clear idea of what Mexico looked and was in the last years of the 19th century. "El Zarco" got his nickname by the light blue color of his eyes and he, being one of the most dreadful bandits of the time, captivates the young heart of the nice, wealthy and beautiful Manuela and so the whole story starts developing in this captivating environment of love, lust, greed, treason, death and much more. The translation in English can also be found. I love this book.
