Overview

There are descendants of angels walking among us. Ember is one of them.

Kirkus Reviews: "An impending apocalypse provides a compelling backdrop for romance in this page-turning first installment of a new YA series. Hopkins expertly weaves her plotlines together in this compulsively readable teen romance story...Hopkins delivers many successful elements of young-adult romance-appealing lead characters, high-voltage chemistry, repressed sexuality-which will win her ardent followers. A paranormal YA tale that's highly recommended for fans of the Twilight series; move over, Bella and Edward, there's a new set of kids on the block."

Embers is an epic paranormal adventure/romance about an eighteen year old girl who discovers that she's immune to fire and any other injury when she's in a horrific car crash that kills her parents. Following a violent episode with her aunt's boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Ember's exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she learns that she's a Watcher, a descendant of angels.

While Ember is instructed about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two teenagers who live inside of a frightening walled compound in the forest. Inexplicably drawn to one of the young men in particular, an impossible romance develops. But it's cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war that's been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years. When the compound's inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil, and the grayness in between.

About the Author

Karen Ann Hopkins resides in northern Kentucky with her family on a farm that boasts a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats. Karen's main job is home schooling the kids, but she finds time to give riding lessons, coach a youth equestrian drill team, and of course, write. She was inspired to create her first book, Temptation, by the Amish community she lived in. The experiential knowledge she gained through her interactions with her neighbors drove her to create the story of the star-crossed lovers, Rose and Noah.

Karen grew up about a mile from Lake Ontario in Upstate New York. She was bitten by the horse bug at the age of five, and after diligently taking riding lessons for several years, was rewarded with her first horse at the age of eleven. The feisty horse's name was Lady, a Quarter Horse-Thoroughbred cross, who became Karen's steadfast companion. Through the years, the constant force in her life was horses. Eventually, she found her place as a riding instructor herself. Before accepting her fate in the barnyard, she worked a short stint as a paralegal, traveled abroad, and guided tourists on horseback riding tours in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Karen is currently working on her Amish mystery series, Serenity's Plain Secrets, along with the YA paranormal/fantasy series, The Wings of War. Karen is also excited to announce the Temptation series has been optioned for TV by Pilgrim Studios and is available on Audible.

Ember is a girl who finds out that she has supernatural powers after a car crash that ended in a fiery inferno. After the discovery of these powers she now possesses she was told by her brother after an argument went bad that she’d have to live with a complete stranger that she had only met once. When she meets the mysterious woman that lives on the mountain she finds out something no one would expect, she was a descendant of angels. Ember is a stupendous book that plays with your heart and gives a few twists and tugs that makes you think about the life of a person who has to keep their powers secret from the rest of the world. It’s an amazing twist on a typical science fiction novel. There is no werewolf vs vampire maybe a little growler vs demon but the novel show the life of a typical teenage girl after her life gets turned upside down, but maybe it’s not for the worse. The character development in the book is superb such as the development of the main character Ember with the struggles of her newly found powers. I could really feel their emotions throughout the whole novel, and the story line was well developed and didn’t have any major plot holes. I would recommend this book for teens and young adults.

Get ready to be flung into a brand new world of paranormal, with an imminent apocalypse brewing furtively. – Abooktopia After the death of her parents in a tragic car crash and a fire that should have killed her too, Ember flees the abuse of her Aunt’s boyfriend, to live with an old time relative. But the old lady is more than she seems. Uncovering a truth about her ties, Ember learns that she is a Watcher, a descendant of Angels. Each Watcher has control over one aspect of the elemental powers, but some with the power to control more than one of the elements. With the help of Ila, Ember learns to control her abilities and control them in, or risk being consumed by the fire inside of her. But being a Watcher is the least of her problems. The end of the world is coming sooner than anyone expects… During her training course as a Watcher, Ember strikes up a scarce friendship with Demon boy Sawyer, and a Growler; Ivan, who can transform into a wolf at, will. As romance blossoms between her and Sawyer, Garret Hammond, the leader of the Demons, gives his followers permission to hunt, and seek the souls of people. When innocent friends of hers are murdered for their souls, Ember takes action as she releases the fire within her, as she gets her revenge for the lives that were taken. Karen Ann Hopkins creates a brand new world of paranormal, or Watchers, Growlers and Demons. Ember O’Meara was strong willed, with a stubborn nature, whilst Sawyer McCrae used humor to hide his regret and loneliness. I loved watching the dynamics between Sawyer and the other Demons, as he felt sympathy and regret for stealing the souls or humans, as he required them to lengthen his life. As for Ivan’s character, I really adored his personality, and his loyalty for both his friends. I hope to learn more about his character as the series progresses.

Finally, a supernatural story to immerse myself into and thoroughly enjoy! Karen Ann Hopkins has come up with some very unique characters - angels and demons, like no other! I couldn't help but find a few Twilight similarities, with the exception that Ember is already a supernatural, and that there is definitely no love-triangle in this story; the insta-love and precautions to it are there, the setting and the 'evil-doers' are all quite relatable. However, the main plot to the story is different, unique and very interesting...  After the tragic loss of her parents, Ember is sent to go stay with her "Aunt" Ila on a somewhat remote mountain in Tennessee. Having no choice but to go, Ember quickly realizes that this is exactly where she needs to be right now. Ila has answers that have been plaguing Ember for months now. And as she learns about her true nature and all of the overwhelming information that goes along with it, Ember never falters and continues to learn and strive.  Ember is a Watcher.  A Watcher is a descendent of angels. Each Watcher has their own kind of elemental power; sometimes being able to control more than one element. And even without any knowledge or proper training, Ember is a very, very strong Watcher. She must reign in her power or risk being consumed by it. And of course, through it all, she must also continue to integrate with the local humans and must forgo home-school and start public school as soon as possible.  And this is where she meets Ivan... a Growler. Which then leads her to meet, Sawyer... a Demon. Out of curiosity for one another, this trio quickly become friends. And soon find out that the end of the world is almost here and that they are all about to enter a war... Good vs. Evil. And know one knows where their loyalties will lie.  The author really impressed me with all of the details, small and large! Every single mention of any sort of being, setting, behavior, etc. is important. The world-building and character growth is compelling, unique and mesmerizing. Do not dismiss anything, or you may miss something important. The Watchers history, is so intriguing. The pacing of the story is crucial, the book starts slow and steady - there is a lot of information to take in. And as we learn and grow right along with our main characters, the story starts to pick up and move along at a good page-turning pace. What I really enjoyed the most is that what you see is never all that you are going to get. There are so many grey-areas within each character, you're always left in suspense as to what they may or may not do. EMBERS sets us up for what is going to be a captivating and thrilling series. There are so many different ways that the story can go. I am really, really looking forward to watching Ember grow and move on with her story.

As I’ve said before, I have been a fan of Karen Ann Hopkin’s writing since I read her first book, Temptations. Her previous books are contemporary – all centered around Amish communities so I was even more intrigued to read her newest book which is a paranormal romance! I liked Ember, the main character, a lot in fact. She loved animals, which instantly warmed me to her character within the first chapter. She was also really loyal and protective of anyone that meant anything to her. You see this especially later on in the story, with the girls that she was friends with. I did find it hard to understand some of Ember’s reactions and feelings though. For one, I thought it was strange that she never contacted Piper (her best friend back at home) or her brother, Timmy. They were featured in the first of the book (until she moved with Ila) and it was obvious that Ember was very close to both of them. They were hardly mentioned once she moved away, and while I understand that she had quite a bit going on (a small understatement perhaps!) I thought it was odd that she didn’t even contact them. Another thing that I just couldn’t wrap my head around was how she put herself into danger so irrationally. I could get how it happened the first time, but then again? It puzzled me. That being said, as much as Ember confused me at times, I still really liked her character! Now Sawyer was someone who just confused me… and in fact I’m still not entirely sure of him. I like him for Ember, but I found it hard to get attached to him. I thought he was really posessive, which goes with him being a Demon, but it still irked me a bit. He too though was really loyal to those he cared about. Ivan and Ila were two of my absolute favorites. I thought Ivan was such a sweet kid, and it almost seemed like he had a bit of a crush on Ember and Ila was just AWESOME. Such a quite, seemingly sweet old lady but she was a bit of a bad ass underneath! And she loved animals and had a special connection with them so of course that again, made me instantly love her. Embers is told in both Ember and Sawyer’s point of view. I really enjoyed this, especially when it got farther into the story. It really gave the story the wow factor during some of the intense action towards the end as well as it really gave both perspective’s of what was happening. It was really interesting to see the story through both a Demon and a Watcher’s eyes and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Embers is definitely an action packed story. There is constantly something happening and I never felt a lull in the storyline at any point. It also is an incredibly unique paranormal book, I can’t say I’ve read anything like it ever. I’ve read Angel and Demon books before but it really set itself a side with some interesting elements. The ending shocked me. I was so sad, and my heart was hurting for Ember… but at the same time I wasn’t entirely shocked because the story kind of gives you this end of it all vibe from the get go. I loved the ending though and it has the perfect ramp up for the next book. I have no idea where it’s going to go from here but I will definitely be continuing the series. Another awesome book from Karen Ann Hopkins!

4.5 Stars 'Embers' is the sensational first book in a paranormal young adult series. It follows main character, Ember, as she begins a long and dark journey to fulfill her destiny. Ember's just a normal teenage girl - until the day a priest seeks her out to tell her that the end of days is coming and she is a Watcher, a descendant of angels who protect humans. Seeming pretty far-fetched, Ember brushes aside the priest's message. Years later, Ember finds herself escaping her terrible home life with her aunt to find solitude in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. It's here that Ember realizes that the priest was right about her being a Watcher, so she starts to learn all about her heritage and history - along with all the powers she now has. Ember stumbles upon a walled compound in the middle of the woods one day and what she finds inside is something she never would have expected. She meets two gorgeous and mysterious guys, who she becomes friends with. Soon Ember finds out that her new friends are on the opposite side of a war from her - one that has been going on for thousands of years between two different factions of Watchers. The people from inside the compound threaten the townspeople around them, and Ember steps up to defend them. She has officially chosen her side - her destiny - to protect humanity and to possibly be one of the select few who will stand up for mankind during the end of days. Having read the author's previous books and really enjoying them, I knew that I had to read her new paranormal novel. I wasn't sure what to expect, but my hopes were high based off of her writing in other works. I definitely wasn't disappointed - the story went far beyond any hopes I may have had. The premise of the book definitely caught my attention - a descendant of Angels who has to protect humanity when the end of the world begins? Awesome. It's not a completely unique plot, but I feel that the author added several aspects to the book that makes it stand out from the rest of them. Ember is a fantastic main character. She's a normal teenage girl who lost her parents when she was young. She was in the car accident along with them, but escaped without a scratch. Nobody - including Ember - can explain it. She continues to lead a normal life while living with her aunt, where she doesn't have a very good home life. Things finally go too far when her aunt's boyfriend becomes violent, and Ember heads for the hills - literally. She's a smart, strong - emotionally, mentally, and physically - determined heroine who remains realistic due to her faults and weaknesses, like enduring her parents' deaths and living a bad life with her aunt. She's cautious and level-headed, which makes her question the whole Watcher bit she's told. Once she learns who she truly is and what she's meant to do - Ember takes it head on with determination and strength. I loved watching her character mature and grow through the book and I hope we see more of that in the next book. The plot was compelling and unique. It contained several different genres throughout the story, ranging from paranormal and fantasy to action and adventure and even some romance. The author effortlessly wove these various types of fiction together to create a one of a kind book that had me completely hooked from the first page. It was easy to relate to Ember, and the author's descriptions throughout the book were vivid and detailed - to the point that I could imagine myself in the story beside Ember while everything is happening. I loved learning all about the Watchers - their history, purpose, the war between factions, the coming rapture and end times - it gave a deeper level to the story and helps to set it apart from others in the genre. The book was definitely fast paced and had me devouring each page to see figure out what was going to happen next. I finished it in one sitting and it left me wanting more. I very highly recommend this book to fans of paranormal fiction along with those who enjoy fantasy, action, adventure, and apocalyptic fiction. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next book's release to see where things will pick up from the end of this book. There's a ton of potential for the storyline and the series, and with an author who has immense talent holding the reigns - I can't wait to read the rest! Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
