End of Day by Jewel E Ann

It's never too soon to take your next breath ...

Behind tinted windows a few yards from mourning family and friends, Jessica and Jude Day witness their parents' funeral-and their own. Stripped of the only life they've ever known, the Days say goodbye to San Francisco forever.

Six months and two new identities later, the thirty-year-old misfits with elite self-defense skills and penchants for alcohol, sex, and trouble arrive like an earthquake to Peaceful Woods, a retirement community in Omaha, Nebraska, that thrives on rules and gossip. Welcome home, Jackson and Jillian Knight.

Jackson celebrates his new beginning by embracing his job and wiping his cavalier past clean with a temporary oath of celibacy. But Jillian's past is branded into her soul-the deaths, the insanity, Dr. Luke Jones, and the need to make her lovers bleed. Her chance for redemption comes in the form of a next door neighbor, one Senior Master Sergeant Monaghan. He's sexy, dangerously alluring, and riddled with emotional issues from years of service. He's also ... So. Damn. Grumpy.

Their mission is simple: Let go, start over, don't kill anyone, and pray that nobody resurrects their past.

Reading is one of my favorite pastimes, but when you’re an avid reader who reads well over 100 novels per year, many books tend to blend together. Authors that bring something fresh to the table stand a better chance of producing work that stands out. Jewel E. Ann brought her A-game with End of Day, and I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like it. She has woven together a gripping, intriguing, and clever novel that I could not put down. What a fantastic start to the Jack & Jill series. End of Day is a romantic-suspense / dramedy / mystery. It is also one huge mindf*ck! It deals with violent subject matter but I wouldn’t classify it as dark fiction; I’d say it falls more on the grey spectrum. It is not a paranormal romance. Thirty year-old twins Jillian and Jackson Knight have just moved to a quiet Omaha retirement community under unknown circumstances. While Jackson embraces their fresh start, Jillian is resistant. The story is told in the third person and centers around Jillian. Always the rule breaker, Jillian relishes giving the male residents heart palpitations by getting her mail clad only in panties, a tank top, and red rain boots. She’s the type of complex protagonist I can really sink my teeth into: damaged, volatile, snarky, nurturing, alluring, and a total badass. Jillian strikes up a dangerous flirtation with AJ, her perpetually grouchy next-door neighbor, who also happens to be a veteran suffering from PTSD. Is he a threat or a second chance? The story switches between the present and Jillian’s past, and it’s these flashbacks that I found to be absolutely captivating. We meet Luke, the great love of Jillian’s life, and we come to learn more about Jillian’s history, as well as the mysteries surrounding her disturbing psychological tendencies. It’s slowly but expertly paced and extremely gratifying. My heart ached for Jillian and her desperate attempts to find redemption and happiness. Although there is no love triangle, I couldn’t help comparing AJ and Luke and wondering which man is better for her. I’m going to crown Jewel E. Ann the “Mary Poppins of Contemporary Romance” because I’m pretty sure she subscribes to the philosophy that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. I’ve discovered that she has a knack for mixing humor and heartbreak and guess what? I like it! She sucker punched me with her style in one of my favorites, Undeniably You, but now I’ve come to expect it. The snarky banter takes the edge off the suffering in this tragically beautiful story. Many questions remain, and we still have no idea what brought the Knights to Nebraska, but I’m excited to find out. End of Day is the first book in the Jack & Jill trilogy. An optional cliffhanger is included, so if you’re not a fan of cliffies don’t read it unless you’re ready to jump into the next book.

It is fantastic! I feel so torn... This character (Jill) is so strong jet vulnerable, fun, daring, compassionate. I love the relationship she has with her brother plus the deeper relationships she has formed in her life. I feel for her and I don't even know what I want for her. I want everything, she deserves it! This book could be classified as out of the ordinary. This is my first time reading from this author and it won't be my last.

Wonderful blend of suspense, humor and romance I’ve only read one other book by Jewel E. Ann, and it was a romantic comedy. I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up End of Day. I’m glad I didn’t start this series until it was completely published since I don’t think I could take waiting for the next book! I’m completely hooked on this fabulous trilogy! Written in 3rd person narrative with a dual timeline plot, End of Day is very detailed and complex. The premise is brilliant and unique. The use of flashbacks to tell the Knights’ backstory is seamless. The beginning might leave you feeling a bit confused because it’s not explained. However, I think that is part of the author’s plan: all will be revealed eventually! I read slowly and devoured all the details—not only because it’s an incredibly good story, but also I know I’ll need to remember those details in the next installment (Middle of Knight). While not a romantic comedy per se, it has more than a fair share of humorous situations. The book is not easily defined in any one genre. This adventure, spy, mystery, romance, dark comedy, contemporary fiction will keep you on your toes and your eyes glued to the book. I thought the use of 3rd person point of view was the perfect choice for this book. It allows the Knights’ mysterious past to be revealed tidbit by tantalizing tidbit. I felt a bit tortured by the slow drip of Jillian’s past; I desperately wanted to gobble up her entire story. With every new layer revealed, the foreboding increased andI felt more dread. I NEED to know why Jillian is the person she is. I want more, more, more of Luke and Jessica (nope, not telling…read the book and find out what I’m talking about). Jackson and twin sister Jillian are perfect together; I love how Jackson looks out for his twin as if he is her older brother. Jackson is a sexy, lethal, computer nerd. I didn’t get enough of him! Jillian is complicated, intelligent, and unpredictable. Jillian is night and day, black and white. Kickass and sassy on the outside, she is a messed up, vulnerable girl on the inside. Her past haunts her. Juxtapose the unconventional, sexy thirty-something twins with the eccentric mix of elderly/older neighbors and you’ve got a sizzling start to the Jack & Jill Series. End of Day is a smart, gripping read. Jewel E. Ann has included plenty of fun play-on-words, scandalous neighborhood antics, a mysterious back story, addictive adventure, and a charismatic cast of characters. Your next mission: read this book!

4.5 stars---Wow…just wow. END OF DAY is the first installment in Jewel E Ann’s adult, contemporary END OF DAY romantic/comedy suspense series focusing on twins Jillian and Jackson Knight (aka Jessica and Jude Day). Told from third person, dual time line perspectives, using present day and past memories, END OF DAY is a storyline that is unlike anything else I have ever read. As per the blurb, thirty year old twins Jessica and Jude Day, now known as Jillian and Jack Knight, are no longer the people they were born to be. A new life, a new identity along with a new location and state find our siblings trying to co-exist in a community of nosy but well meaning elderly citizens along with one grumpy neighbor (and his twenty year old son) who may or may not have an interest in Jillian Knight. Jillian is an emotionally damaged and broken heroine who hides behind a façade of one liners, twisted humor, sexy clothing and seductive foreplay. She is a force unto herself; a woman whose life has been shattered, destroyed and put back together but no longer functions at its’ peak performance. Her previous life with Dr. Luke Jones is revealed through memories, flashbacks and ‘DAY’ points of view, while her current life in the retirement community in Omaha Nebraska finds our heroine falling in love with a man-Senior Master Sergeant Monoghan- who quite possibly, is more damaged than our heroine-herself. Jackson is the overprotective brother who keeps our heroine on her toes ensuring that Jillian’s sense of self-preservation does not go unforgotten or falls to the side. The sibling’s relationship is fraught with typical brother/sister antics that are taken to the next level of guardianship, babysitting and love. Jack and Jill have tumbled down the proverbial hill and are trying to climb back up to regain some sense of normality. Their verbal and physical sparring matches leave a trail of sweat, blood and water (along with a few fish) in the wake. END OF DAY is a storyline that allows the reader small glimpses and clues into the events that culminated in the person now known as Jillian Knight. Readers who tend to skim or skip will, in all likelihood, miss some important information regarding Jillian/Jessica’s past but for all intents and purposes, the bigger picture has yet to be revealed. Small flashes of their previous life reveal more heartbreak and pain than anyone could possible imagine. But…saying that….END OF DAY is awash in humor, funny comebacks, and comedic one-liners that will have you giggling and chuckling throughout the story-a bit of comic relief among the painful memories. The storyline ends on a cliff hanger but the author gives the reader the option of a sneak peak into the first chapter of book two where your heart will break once again. Jewel E Ann’s END OF DAY is unique among the current crop of romantic suspense storylines. The premise is amazingly detailed; awash in clues, memories, hints at the potential for further fall out and heartbreaking reality. The back and forth between timelines add a mix of anxiety, suspense and humorous situations that reveal a young woman not unlike our current timeline Jill but one whose life has not yet completely spiraled out of control. END OF DAY is a seductive storyline that will take hold and never let go. The intense drama and traumatic scenarios are balanced with humor and the amazing banter between our heroine and the people in her life. END OF DAY will astonish the reader wit

Fantastic! Funny, Sexy, Action-Packed, yet full of emotion. AJ & Jillian seem immediately attracted to one another, but Jillian and her twin brother, Jackson, at attempting to build new lives in Nebraska, where getting to know their new neighbors could prove fatal. I was addicted to this book from page 1. I am very empathetic towards Jill's struggle between her new persona and past personality. (Hysterical reference to Mr. Snuffleapagus.) (Heh - about that 2nd toe remark, LOL).

What did I just read??? No, seriously...WHAT.DID.I.READ. This has to be one of the craziest, strangest, most oddly endearing books I have ever read. It's a complete page-turner that took me on one wild ride. I honestly don't even know what to say about this book other than READ IT. End of Day is a tangled tale. Jillian and her twin Jackson have had their lives uprooted, upended, and they've landed in Omaha, NE, where they proceed to scandalize their new community...with Jillian the main perpetrator. The girl has issues, no doubt about it. But you can't help but fall a little bit in love with her...I kind of want to be her, minus that whole drawing blood thing. This is her story, and what a story it is. Jillian is feisty, strong, ballsy, but because of what happened to her in the past she's also damaged and vulnerable. She's probably the most unique heroine I've ever read. I loved the relationship the twins had- because they are twins, and because of their upbringing, they have such a special bond. Each takes care of the other in a way they can't do for themselves. They are also fun and silly together, how you'd want to be with your sibling. There's so much depth to this story, so much character and intrigue, but there's still so much more we have need to learn about these 2. The only real issue I had with this book was that I wanted some kind of conclusion/closure at the end- something that it made worth the time I put into reading it. It seemed like just as we were getting invested in all these characters, bam it was over. I'm really looking forward to the next 2 books in the trilogy, because I have to know what happens with Jillian and Aj, Jessica and Luke, and who knows what is to come with Jackson!

Jewel E. Ann's "End of Day" is the first book in the Jack & Jill series. There are a lot of hot sex scenes - often with someone spilling a little blood! A little dark here and there, but not what I would consider a dark erotic romance. The switches back and forth between the past and present are interesting. When it ended I wanted to keep reading! Can't wait for #2 to come out.
