About the Author

Bernard J. Schober (aka The Klute) has been a slam poet since 1999. He
got his start under the tutelage ofRichard Green, poet and founder
of the West Palm Beach poetry slam at the Underground Coffeeworks
on the corner of Clernatis and Narcissus.

He achieved some early success at the West Palm Beach Slam, quickly
rising up the ranks of the scene to become the alternate for the first
slam team sent to the National Poetry flom the state of Florida.

As fate would have it, he would not be abie to fulfill his duties as slam
alternate. Before the 2000 National Poetry Slam (held in Providence,
Rhode Island), Bernard J. Schober left the state ofFlorida for the
deserts of the American Southwest.

Arriving in Arizona, he began to perform in Phoenix's poetry
community, the success he achieved in West Palm Beach quickly
evaporating in the hot desert sun. Struggling to find his voice, his muse,
however you want to anthropomorphize it, he took a leave of absence, a
sabbatical, however you want to say nicely that he quit. However,
trying to separate him from writing is like trying to disconnect Dick
Cheney flom his pacemaker. It could be done, but he'd probably
die in the process. The Klute kept writing... And soon, he began to
recapture some ofthe accolades he had earned in Florida.
He tearned up with Stephen G. Roy and Cage McAleister to form the
Non-Native Transplants, which was voted the #1 Performance Poetry
in the Phoenix Metro area in 2001 . Bernard himself was voted the
Slammer of the Year by the people of the Mesa poetry slam in 2001
as well, and he's the #1 slam poet in Phoenix Metro area according to

The Klute is not a taut action thriller starring Donald Sutherland and
Jane Fonda, nor is he a German industrial band.

I am a fan of the Klute's live poetry and can actually hear in my head his voice performing these pieces. Or maybe that is the other voices in my head, its a toss up :)
