A raw, honest account of the grief journey, masterfully told. You will smile and cry as you join Walko on his path. Walko has a gift for conveying feelings and emotions through words. The pages transport the reader to a place right beside him, even within him, such that the reader experiences Walko's physical surroundings and intimate emotions. One can feel the power of the storm that arises shortly after his wife's death and the cool calmness that comes it its wake, the dry, harsh desert environ where he takes his young sons camping. His intimate emotions, struggles and fears are masterfully told, such as when he describes in detail the last week of his wife's life, a chapter that is so downright gut-wrenching I found myself rushing through it, only to return again to allow myself to slowly absorb the incredible events described. There is also a unique and refreshing quality about the honesty and rawness with which he describes this journey. Despite his genuine devastation with the death of his wife, and his clear admiration of and love for her, he doesn't portray their marriage as perfect. Nor does he deny his shortcomings, or even his anger and bitterness with his new role as single parent. This book is a very moving, but ultimately uplifting work, and it is well worth riding along as Walko eloquently describes his path from shell-shocked widower to a place of acceptance and hope.
