Overview

The Executive Juris Docor desk reference provides supplemental legal doctrine of the basic legal principles developed to meet the needs of those seeking a quick overview of the major doctrines law students are required to master. Whether one attends Yale Law School or is qualified through a law office study program, the exam questions are the same. The traditional study of law takes several years following a four-year undergraduate degree. The major disciplines are arranged in an order consistent with traditional law study. Getting a good grasp of the fundamental courses is vital to understanding the general principles of law and how the system of law interacts with business and society. This course covers general legal principles and is not specific to any jurisdiction. As customary in teaching law, many cases cited are from other countries. Modern American jurisprudence is a culmination of legal systems found worldwide. About the Author

For some, the study of law seems arduous and, at times, overwhelming. My goal is to explain complex matters in simplified terms and make them as understandable as possible. I earned my Juris Doctor degree from Southern California Institute of Law in 1991. I began my legal career as a law clerk with the Ventura County Public Defender's Office under the direction of noted author and Public Defender Richard E. Erwin. This experience inspired me to spend my career as a newspaper business editor and legal writer. In the study of law, one is taught to think in the abstract, as opposed to everything being either black or white. Legal issues are not always a yes or no matter and typically require critical thinking.  Learning to think like a lawyer requires a structured manner of processing information, on the one hand, and creative thinking on the other.  In the study of law, in using the Socratic method, students learn to think on their feet and speak extemporaneously, developing the ability to argue their case. My objective, since the Socratic method is not available, is to explain basic legal principles in terms that most people can understand, without requiring a Black's Law Dictionary to be readily available.
