In spite of everything—our failures, our fears, our worries, our attempted control of our own lives—God loves us. He adores us. And if you don’t believe me, read Kelly Balarie’s Fear Fighting. You’ll walk away believing that God is on your side. That you’re not in the battle alone. Kelly is known as a “cheerleader of faith,” but she isn’t just standing there shouting “Yea, God!” This is a woman whose stories are exuberant and passionate and hopeful—because she knows what she’s talking about. She has lived with fear, faced countless challenges, and learned that God is the answer to it all. I think every single one of us can benefit from her encouraging insights and practical tips. In fact, as I was reading, I kept jotting down the names of people who should read this. And you might as well add your own name to the list, because there’s something in here for you. I’m sure of it!
In her book “Fear Fighting”, Kelly Balarie shows us how to overcome our everyday fears. Kelly uses her real life experiences and spiritual wisdom to show us how to conquer those fears. I loved this book! I could relate to so many of the fears Kelly talked about. I had many “aha” moments! I have highlighted so many important quotes throughout the whole book. I feel like I have gained so much insight. I’m hoping I can use some of Kelly’s wisdom to curb some of my fears! This will be a book that I will keep on my shelves and refer back to it. I definitely recommend this book to everyone especially those that have fears they want to conquer. I received this book from Baker Books for my honest opinion.
Fear Fighting by Kelly Balarie was a book I didn't expect to find very helpful. Perhaps it was the title; I wouldn't describe my life as filled with fear or seeking the courage to overcome a fear, as the subtitle suggests. So I read Part 1 (the first 3 chapters) thinking, "Yeah, this book might be helpful for someone else, going through something really challenging or trying to overcome a big obstacle in their life, but not me." THEN came Part 2 - "Spirit Arising: Demolishing the Eight Fear Inducers." I couldn't have been more wrong in my early assessment of this book. Chapter 4 blew me away! Loaded with Scripture references, Balarie teaches the reader how to pray through some powerful portions of the Bible like Ephesians 6:14-17 and Romans 8. She teaches the reader how to overcome the lies that we let the enemy sneak into our minds. Then for the TKO she lists 10 things the devil wants you to believe, and I found myself identifying with each and every one of them. Yikes! This book is most certainly for me! And that's just Chapter 4! Balarie goes on exploring issues like control, people-pleasing, dwelling in the past, and more. Ignore the title of this book - I would encourage everyone to pick up Fear Fighting and give it a chance. Even if you only identify with a few chapters here and there, you will surely be blessed for discovering the lessons this book teaches on letting go of the lies we hold onto and embracing biblical truth in every area of our lives. I received this book free from Baker Books through the Baker Books Bloggers. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.

Kelly doesn’t miss the mark! Kelly Balarie says she is the Cheerleader of Faith and I believe it! Fear Fighting: Awakening Courage to Overcome Your Fears is right up there with her cheerleader style as she encourages us to overcome judgement, worry, apprehensiveness, (and a lot of other junk), and gain understanding of who we are to God. Kelly knows that the promises of God are available for everyone and that Fear is likely to stop us from gaining what is ours in Christ. Kelly offers practical advice in a witty and caring way that will help you understand how fear is hindering you and how to gain courage to overcome it. As a counselor, I understand the devastating effects of fear. I see it in my office all the time. I have experienced the devastating effects in my own life. I plan on using this book as a tool for my clients, in our church and, of course, in my own life. This book is a must read!
Kelly Balarie is honest, yet gentle; understanding, yet insistent that we as readers take action steps to overcome fear. I love her use of personal stories and tales of women close to her. She also weaves biblical examples and scripture throughout the chapters seamlessly. This book is best marked up, dog-eared, and read with a group of friends. She provides a 12-week study guide at the end of the chapter reading to do just that. Balarie's writing style alternates between prose and subtle poetry, inviting the reader into a more intimate relationship with God. I found myself sitting at the table sharing a cup of coffee with her, and just as quickly, standing before the throne in sweet prayer. Fear Fighting has something in it for everyone. (Please note: I received this book as a part of Baker Publishing's launch of Fear Fighting, though I'm posting this review to B&N by my volition. I was not asked to do so.)
I began reading Fear Fighting because I wanted freedom from a life of fear. Fear has caused me to miss out on many activities with my family and friends. It’s kept me: isolated; in tears; awake at night; from making new friends; from believing I could do new things and more. I had grown to accept fear as a part of who I am – even though I didn’t like it. Then I found Fear Fighting! In this amazing book, Kelly Balarie takes the Word of God and combines her personal experiences to help readers begin living a life of freedom. With love and grace, she expands upon God’s Words of hope, freedom and peace for every believer. My biggest revelation while reading Fear Fighting came when I realized how much I was feeding my flesh in times of fear, rather than feeding the Spirit. For “where the spirit is there is freedom.” (2 Cor. 3:17) I wouldn’t say I am totally free of fear, but after reading Fear Fighting I feel much more equipped to approach fear with the courage that comes from reciting God’s Word and continually praying and praising God – even when it’s not easy.
Whether it’s feelings of inadequacy, parenting anxieties, or panic over the latest terrorist tactics in the news, the challenge to face down our fears and to move forward into new, healthful, and bold behaviors is a common thread for January writing and thinking. The problem, however, with this seasonal booster is that the need for courage doesn’t expire on February 1. Fear Fighting is a year-round calling and Kelly Balarie is a natural born cheerleader, committed to awakening courage in her readers. She has earned some pretty impressive credentials as a fear fighter in her battles with an eating disorder, depression, financial stresses, and family tragedies. She has learned, first hand, that transformation is an act of God that takes place in the present tense. With a raised fist, she trumpets the invitation to be a modern-day Deborah, the fiery woman from the time of the Old Testament Judges who dared to ask questions, listened for God’s answers, ejected the enemy’s lies, timed her move, and then acted in confident belief without fear — because she knew where she was going. Since no one is completely fearless, everyone can fear less, and learning to live as a fear fighter is best accomplished in community. Kelly has flung the doors open wide, inviting readers into her story and into a network of like-minded warriors through her website and her blog. (Click to visit!) Fear fighting is a process and growth happens one step at a time. The question that comes to my mind is this: What would you do to a friend who lied to you as often as your fears have? This helpful filter (p. 64) is a tool for identifying the voice inside your head: If it woos with the voice of love, it is God. If it calls you closer to God, it is God. If it speaks truth, it is God. If it wants to beat you, tie you, and throw you out back for always being despicable, it is not God. “Anything not founded in love does not equal God.” It is no surprise to me that thousands of years ago, Isaiah the prophet also expressed the invitation to become a fear fighter: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand,” Isaiah 41:10. In these early days of 2017, it’s a great time to admit to the reality of fears that whisper words of condemnation and failure and to accept the help of others, to learn from their stories, and, most crucially, to enter into the transforming Truth of God’s Word. // This book was provided by Baker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for my review.
