To what extent are we our brother’s keeper? The Felders grapple with an idealized version of that question against a lifelong backdrop of very different choices. And in the chaos of daily survival, how can we be expected to save our brothers if we can’t seem to save ourselves?

At some level, we all fear our family history, the parts we can’t escape or the ones we can never live up to, and we carry that baggage around so that nobody else can unpack it. The ceaseless march of time claims our parents, settles all scores, and reveals the true man behind the curtain or, in most cases, in the mirror.

Miles DeMott’s first novel, Family Meeting, was well-received by readers and critics, especially those who got the free advance copies. He followed this critical success with Marriage is a Verb, leading many to speculate that his third book would incorporate divorce in the title and would somehow involve a restraining order. Such is not the case. At least not yet. He lives and writes in Alabama, often by choice.
