Overview

First Strike by Richard Turner

When war comes after a century of peace, it is sudden and brutal. Taken by surprise Earth's far-flung colonies are in danger.
The only son of an admiral, Second Lieutenant Michael Sheridan finds himself thrust into a desperate conflict that he and the untried soldiers under his command are not ready for. Fighting the enemy and the elements on a cold, hostile world, Sheridan must rely upon Staff Sergeant Cole, a veteran Marine, to help lead his green soldiers into battle.
Focusing on the people struggling to survive the onslaught, First Strike is a novel that propels the reader to the furthest limits of space. From the ground to the stars, First Strike looks at the conflict through the eyes of those caught up in it.
Fighting a ruthless and determined enemy, Sheridan soon learns the brutal lessons of war and that his enemy may not be what it appears to be.

I read another book by Richard Turner a few months ago, and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised, and pleased to see that he had now turned his hand to writing science fiction (quite a departure!). This book, like the other one I read previously, has all the elements of a great military thriller but is set in space. This very fact, for me, demonstrated that this author is extremely adaptable and also has a fantastic imagination! Richard Turner writes competently and confidently. The characters are very believable and the story shoots along at a fantastic pace. If you like your science fiction to be action packed, well written, with an engaging storyline then look no further. I for one, hope that this foray into science fiction will not be Mr Turner's last!

The author does a great job of character development and the plot really moves along. Plenty of action. A real page turner. Scarfed it in two days.

The author writes well and knows how to keep the story moving. The characters are only barely acceptable clones of other "heroic" characters, but what really hurts this book is the total lack of combat reality through most of the book. Almost every battle scene and tactic used is a poor rehash of WWII (or worse) a lack of real understanding of war and battle. This book may appeal to young readers not bothered by realism and brought up on TV fantasy. It may also appeal to people with no true concept of fighting and wars who like plenty of action no matter how silly it is. However if you are looking for a serious SiFi military/space seried, this is NOT it! J C

I am a pacifist but the action in this book had me cheering. The author delivered a war story with the gore, gunfire, and battlefield scenes that came alive. Throw in the camaraderie and a love story and call this a winner!

A little too transparent recreation of WWI trench warfare. Good space opera. Entertaining scifi. Do not like that the warp drive exiting to normal space does not cause a flash. It should make a disturbance IMHO.

An optimistic view of military officers, nco’s and their interactions. Kind of a Gunsmoke kind of story where the good guys are always good and always win. I liked it.

Fast moving story. Couldn't put it down. A completely different approach on an alien invasion. Highly recommended.

The book kept my interest from page one. It has enough action to satisfy any action junky. The battle scenes could have from a couple of battles I fought in.

The antagonists in this book could just as easily be radical islamists... the fanatical religious devotion and the subversion of disaffected and impressionable members of the other side is a very familiar strategy today. Much of this technique could come from this morning's headlines. The science fiction elements are well planned and enhance rather than detracting from the plot line. The reader has very little difficulty suspending disbelief to enjoy the action in the story. Overall I felt this was a pretty good read and will look for more from this author.

Pretty good intro novel to a new series. Unfortunately the authors lack of sophistication in writing shows through and takes some of the shine off an otherwise enjoyable read. I look forward to improved techniques with the following novels.
