Overview

For a Girl Becoming by Joy Harjo, Mercedes McDonald

Transformative moments in the cycle of life are a time for acknowledgment, a chance to guide a child’s path in a positive and loving direction.

Swirling images laden with both myth and personal meaning illustrate this unique, poetic tale of the joys and lessons of a girl’s journey through birth, youth, and finally adulthood. Within these colorful pages, family and community come together in celebration of her arrival, offering praise, love, and advice to help carry her forward through the many milestones to come, and reminding her always of how deeply she is cherished. It is a reminder, too, of our abiding connections to the natural world, and the cyclical nature of life as a whole.

With its rich, symbolic artwork and captivating language, For a Girl Becoming is the perfect gift to recognize a birth, graduation, or any other significant moment in a young woman’s life. Not only for children, this lively and touching story speaks to that part in each of us who still stands at the door of becoming.

"For a Girl Becoming" was written by Joy Harjo and illustrated by Mercedes McDonald. It is a children’s picture book based on her poem of the same name. In the back of the book, there is an “About the Author” page and an “About the Illustrator” page. In general, the poem gives blessings, wishes, and advice for a girl for throughout her life. On the dedication page, Joy Harjo dedicates this book to her current grandchildren and “those yet to be born”. The purpose of this book was to give blessings and advice to help shape her granddaughter’s identity, which has been extended to all of her grandchildren as seen in the dedication. "For a Girl Becoming" by Joy Harjo is a picture book of juvenile poetry. It is a good book for a general audience of all ages, particularly for a girl who is coming of age. This book is especially recommended for teachers who want to teach about the importance of land to American Indian identity and the belief of the cyclical nature to time and life since they are represented accurately. The illustrator, Mercedes McDonald, is not of native descent. This book is also a way to talk about the ethical dilemmas surrounding a non-native person representing American Indian cultures and the obligation to represent them accurately. Overall, I would recommend "For a Girl Becoming" by Joy Harjo because of its representation of identity, land, and spirituality as interconnected, its cyclical nature, and the accuracy of the illustrations.
