Overview

At the end of the 21st century, a catastrophic accident in the asteroid belt has left two surveyors dead. There is no trace of their young son, Alex Manez, or of the asteroid itself.

On the outer edge of the solar system, the first manned mission to Pluto, led by the youngest female astronaut in NASA history, has led to an historic discovery: there is a marker left there by an alien race for humankind to find. We are not alone!

While studying the alien marker, it begins to react and, four hours later, the missing asteroid appears in a Plutonian orbit, along with young Alex Manez, who has developed some alarming side-effects from his exposure to the kinetic element they call Kinemet.

From the depths of a criminal empire based on Luna, an expatriate seizes the opportunity to wrest control of outer space, and takes swift action.

The secret to faster-than-light speed is up for grabs, and the race for interstellar space begins!

Love the plot and characters tho character development pretty thin. Real problem are the pages of technical gibberish that add nothing to story. Almost gave up a few times in boredom but persevered just to hear the end of the story. Book seriously needs an editor to cut a forth or even a third of extraneous words and make this a great read instead of grueling.

Interesting take on the Myans. Well written although the story does bog down a little towards the end. Still worth teading.

A fun read. Good originality with some piggyback on an older theme. Yes some technical bog that does nothing. Worth reading.

I liked this story because it is not too far out in the future and is not fantasy. Daniels technical concepts are plausible and I like his theories about light speed travel. You would like this book if you are like me and not into fantasy. I plan to read other books by this author.

This started to read like a juvenile with odd ideas and simple concepts. It managed to pull it all together and become a worthwhile read. I will probably read the sequesl when it comes out.

Not so good. Pacing of the story was uneven. Characters are superficial. The plot was weak, with no realism in the setting or the ending. While I saw areas of interesting writing, the lack of skill exceeded the scope of this story. The author has potential that I hope is realized in later work..

Riveted me to my chair from the start. An interesting presentation of greed versus compassion in a science fiction setting. I just keep reading... the intrigue is great!

The book kept you glued to it. It ends in a way that it leaves you up in the air, though. The only down side is you feel the need to buy the next book to find out what happens next. There is a third book also in the series.

I rarely re-read books. I started reading this one, having forgotten I had read it. Eventually it became familiar. But since I was enjoying it, I continued. What better compliment or rating can you give? DMB
