Forest Service Trails: Long-and Short-Term Improvements Could Reduce Maintenance Backlog and Enhance System Sustainability

The 193 million acres of public land managed by the Forest Service as national forests and grasslands are collectively known as the National Forest System. These lands are located in 44 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands and make up about 9 percent of the United States' total land area.
