About the Author

When we came up with the idea for Freya, we had wanted to write about an actual Scottish female clan chief, and this proved hard to find. But we got so inspired by all our research on women in Scottish history, and in particular by the North Berwick witch trials, that Freya’s fictional story came to us in a flash: a female clan chief falsely accused of witchcraft who flees for her life! Working closely together, we very quickly wrote a story summary, devising all the plot points, and from then the script poured out of John. The story really resonated with him, perhaps because he is Scottish. Sandra loves drawing dramatic scenes, historical settings and moody Scottish landscapes, so was in her element. We love making graphic novels because they’re perfect for bringing stories with lots of action, excitement and emotions to life, using dynamic images, narrative text and dialogue all at the same time.
