Chapter One
"Gla-mou-rous," said Paradise while looking at herself in the mirror.
"Paradise, how many times do I have to tell you to stay out my jewelry!" said her mom.
"But Mom, its summer vacation! And why do Jersei and Phoenyx get to wear your jewelry, and not me?"
"Because they're older than you are. When you get to be their age, you can wear all the jewelry you want. I will even buy you gold since you love jewelry so much, ok?"
"Ok, Mom. I can't wait until I get to be a teenager," said Paradise.
Paradise loved to be in her mom's room trying on all her jewelry. She admired her big sisters when they wore their mother's jewelry. There was one pair of beautiful earrings that her mother never let anyone wear, and Paradise was determined to be the first.
"Paradise, your friend is here," yelled Jersei.
"Ok, here I come," said Paradise.
"Hurry up, slowpoke!" said Phoenyx.
Paradise finished removing all her mother's jewelry from around her neck and arms and rushed downstairs to see which one of her friends were outside waiting on her.
"Hey Paradise girl," said Dominique. "Want to go to the store?"
"Of course. Let me get some money from my mom."
Paradise went upstairs to get some money from her mother. Her mother gave her three dollars. She was happy when her mom gave her money to go to the store because Mommy always gave her more than enough. After she got some money from Mommy, she asked her big sister, Savannah, for another dollar.
"What you need a dollar for?" asked Savannah.
"So I could go to the store with Dominique," Paradise replied.
"Don't give it to her because she just got a dollar from mommy!" said Phoenyx.
"It's ok." Savannah said. "She could have another one."
"Ooh, I wish I had some big sisters," Dominique said.
Now paradise was really happy because she had four dollars and she could buy everything she really wanted from the store.
Dominique and Paradise began to walk to the store. The store was just right up the hill from both of their homes. Dominique and Paradise lived across the walkway from each other. They would walk to the store together all the time.
"What are you going to get from the store?" asked Paradise.
"I'm getting a cold popsicle, because it's really hot out here!" Dominique said.
"Well, I'm getting a cherry Ring Pop, popsicle, chips, juice and ice cream," said Paradise.
"Wow. That's a lot of junk and if you eat all that, your stomach is going to hurt."
When they went inside the store, Paradise thought of something. She decided she wasn't going to spend all her money on sweets.
"You know what, your right. I'm not going to get all that stuff!"
"Well, what are you going to get?" asked Dominique.
"I'm just going to get a Popsicle because it is too hot out here! You know what else, I really wouldn't mind going swimming too."
"Well, you know what that means," Dominique said.
"Waaater fiiiiight!" exclaimed both of the girls.
"You go that way, and I'll go this way," said Paradise.
They both went their separate ways to go and get the rest of their friends so they could have a water fight. This was a big event for Paradise and her friends. They gathered Ashley, Crystal, Shon, Rashad, Mark, Eric and Terrance. They had all the things they needed to have a water fight.
They began their water fight and water was everywhere. They had water balloons, big buckets, water guns and a water hose. They were splashing water all over the place.
"Do you guys want to open the fire hydrant and get drenched, having water blast out everywhere?" Rashad asked.
"Ooh, yeeeeah," Crystal said.
"How are we going to do that?" Ashley asked.
"I'll show you," Rashad said. "Come on."
They began to walk toward the school where the fire hydrant was.
"I feel so much better and cooler now," Paradise said.
"Me too," Dominique said.
"Me three," Crystal said.
"Me four," Ashley said.
"Are you all ready to get more wet and have more fun?" Mark asked.
The girls never heard of opening the fire hydrant to have a water fight, but they were ready to see what it was like.
Rashad went home and got some tools from his big brother's house. When he arrived back to the school, he went over to the fire hydrant and twisted and turned, and twisted and turned until water blasted out everywhere..
"Ooh, my goodness!" Paradise said.
"Let's have fun!" Shon yelled.
They laughed, played and had marvelous fun in the water.
"There's no need to go swimming if this fire hydrant let out this much water," Dominique said.
"Your right," Ashley said. "This is so much fun and I'm so cooled off. I think I'm going to be cold for days."
They giggled and went back to playing in the huge water splash. Paradise thought about the left over money she had in her pocket. It was getting all wet. She decided to run home and put her three dollars in her secret safe place.
"I'm done getting all wet you guys," Paradise told her friends. "I'm going to walk home and dry up in the sun."
"Ok, best friend," Dominique said.
"We're going to see you later, Paradise," Crystal said.
Paradise walked home and the hot sun felt so good against her chilled arms and legs. "That water was so freezing," she thought to herself.
Paradise made it home, and when she walked in, Jersei, Phoenyx and Savannah were sitting in the living room, watching one of their favorite television shows.
"Oooooh, you got all your pretty clothes wet," Phoenyx said. "You better not come in here yet because you're going to get water all over the floor! Why didn't you put on a swimming suit?"
"I didn't want to put on a swimming suit, and I'll just mop it up!" Paradise said.
Paradise went upstairs to her bedroom and changed clothes. She sat her money out and let it dry before she put it up. Paradise went back downstairs to mop up the water that had dripped from her clothes. When she finished mopping, she sat on the couch and watched TV with her big sisters.
"Hey, girls, do you all want to go for a ride?" asked their mom.
"Yeah," Paradise said. "Where to?"
"Over Mother and Daddy house," Mom said.
"No, I'll stay here," Savannah said.
"Me too," Phoenyx and Jersei said together.
"Well, I want to go, Mom," Paradise said.
"First, tell me why your hair is all wet," Mom said. "Did you kids have a water fight?"
"Yes, and it was awesome this time. Rashad opened the fire hydrant."
"Fire hydrant!" Mom exclaimed. "How did he do that?"
"I don't know. He had tools. Look out the door. They're still getting wet."
Everyone looked out the door and by this time there were even more kids playing in the water and having a blast.
"Oh, my goodness!" Mom said.
Paradise and her mom left to go over to Mother and Daddy's house. Mother and Daddy were Paradise's grandparents. Paradise loved to go over there because her oldest sister, Cali, lived there. They spoiled Paradise every time she went over there because she was the youngest of five sisters. When they arrived, Paradise rushed inside.
"Hi, Mother, hi Daddy," said Paradise.
"Hi baby, we missed you," Mother said. "How have you been?"
"I've been great," Paradise said. "Where's Cali?"
"She's upstairs," Daddy said.
Paradise walked upstairs to Cali's room. Paradise loved Cali's room. Cali had a big water bed and a bunk bed for Paradise when she stayed the night. She went into Cali's room and jumped on the water bed.
"Girl, you are going to bust my bed one of these days," Cali said.
"I hope not," Paradise said. "Anyway, can you take me to the playground before we leave?"
When Paradise would go to her grandparents' house, Cali would always take her to the park so she could see her other friends that lived nearby. Right across the street from Mother and Daddy's house was a swimming pool and a church, and behind the both of them is where the playground was.
"I'm going to go and tell Mommy we are going to the playground," Paradise said. "I'll be right back."
Paradise went downstairs to the living room where Mother, Daddy and her mom spent a lot of time talking to one another.
"Mom, Cali is about to take me to the playground for a while," Paradise said.
"No, Paradise," her mom said. "We are about to leave real soon."
"Well, can she just take me across the street to look at the kids swim in the pool, and when you're ready to leave just call my name, ok?" Paradise asked.
"Ok, that's fine," Mom said.
"Are you ready Paradise?" Cali asked.
"Yeah, but we're leaving soon, so just take me over to the pool," Paradise said.
"Why are you guys leaving so soon?" Cali asked.
"We have to go and get Paradise something to wear for family pictures on Friday," said Paradise's mom.
Just when Paradise's mom said "family picture," Paradise got so excited. She instantly thought about those beautiful earrings.
"Oooooh Mommy, please let me wear those beautiful earrings for the pictures," Paradise pleaded. "Please, Mommy, please?"
"I already told you 'no,' Paradise. They are too long. You can wear them when you turn fifteen!"
"Fifteen? That's three years from now, and way too long. I've been saving up some money. Can I buy my own?"
"Oh, really?" Paradise's mom asked. "How have you been saving up money if you never have money to go to the store?"
"Well, I have been saving some of the money over the weeks that you and Savannah have been giving me," Paradise said.
"She really is determined to wear a nice pair of earrings," Daddy said.
"Go ahead and let her wear those earrings, Vikki," Mother said.
Mother said exactly what Paradise wanted her to. It was like she could read Paradise's mind. "Grandmothers know everything, and the right time to say something too," Paradise thought to herself. Cali and Paradise headed out the door to go across the street and watch the kids play in the pool.
Paradise just wanted to watch the kids because she had already had all the fun back at home. Her hair was still wet from the water fight. The whole time she and Cali watched the kids play, Paradise didn't say a word. She still had those earrings on her mind.
"What are you thinking about?" Cali asked.
"I really want to wear those earrings on picture day," Paradise said. "Just one time, or maybe twice."
"Well, I hope mommy lets you wear them, but if she don't, I'll buy you some different ones," Cali said. "That way you can still save up the money you have."
"That's fine, but I really want those earrings and nothing different," Paradise said.
"Well, when we go to the mall, I'll buy you something pretty out of Ice. I'm sure I'll find you a better pair of earrings than Mom's."
"Ice" was a store inside the mall where all the teenagers shopped at for jewelry. Paradise shopped at "Tiffani's," the store for the younger girls, but she always wanted to go inside of Ice with her sister's when they went to the mall. When Cali told Paradise about shopping at Ice, she felt much better.
"I know you're going to look gorgeous for the pictures," Paradise said. "Do you know what you're wearing?"
"No, not yet," Cali said. "I'll find something at the mall tomorrow."
Just then, Paradise heard their mom call her name, which meant it was time to go. She wasn't ready to leave yet because her and Cali didn't have their usual girl talk. It was ok because Paradise had planned on calling Cali when she got back home. They walked across the street and Paradise got in the car with her mom.
"Are we about to go find me something to wear on Friday?" Paradise asked.
"Yes, and I'm going to need your help to find Jersei, Phoenyx, and Savannah something too."
"Mom, you know they're going to want to pick out their own clothes. Remember the last time we bought their clothes. They weren't too happy."
"Yeah, you're right," Mom said. "I guess I better go and pick them up first."
"You don't have to pick them up because Cali is going to the mall tomorrow and they could just go with her," Paradise said.
Paradise didn't want them to go because she would have to sit in the backseat and the rule was that the oldest sister sat in the front.
After driving for about 30 minutes, Paradise and her mom arrived at the shopping plaza where Mom shopped a lot.
"Which one of these stores do you want to go in for yourself?" Mom asked.
"Let's go to Colours first and if I don't find anything there, then we can go to Charli's clothing store," Paradise said.
"I still haven't decided what colors everyone is going to wear," Mom said.
"Something bright with silver or gold in it since it's the summer," Paradise said.
"Wow," Mom said. "Don't you have nice taste, just like me!"
Paradise wanted something silver because of her mom's earrings she was still determined to wear. She looked for a nice summer outfit. Paradise found the perfect shirt that matched the earrings perfectly. Now she had to find a bottom piece to wear with it.
Paradise looked all around for a pretty skirt to wear with the shirt, but she couldn't find the piece she wanted. She had become so tired from the long day she had, that all she wanted to do was go home, sit down, and watch TV. It was getting dark outside, and she finally felt like getting some rest. Paradise and her mom left Colours and headed home with the girls.
"What's the matter?" Paradise's mom asked.
"Nothing," Paradise said. "I'm just so tired, I can't wait to get home and take a shower so I can lay down."
"That water fight really wore you out, huh?"
"Yeah, I think so. It was fun too. I wouldn't mind doing that again one day."
"I don't know about that too soon. Look at your hair! I have to do it all over again."
"Well, next time I'll wear a shower cap or put something over my hair because my swimming cap tore."
"Ok, that sounds better, but don't just throw water all over your pretty hair styles!"
They finally arrived at home, and Paradise was ready to get in the shower until she noticed that Phoenyx was inside the bathroom.
"Oh my goodness!" Paradise exclaimed.
"What's the matter?" Jersei asked.
"I wanted to get in the shower so I could lay down and watch TV because I'm so tired!"
"Well, Phoenyx should be almost done because she's been in there forever," Jersei said.
"Well, I'm going to bang on the door so she could hurry up!" Paradise said.
BANG! BANG! BANG! Paradise banged on the bathroom door.
"Stop hitting the door or I'll never come out!" Phoenyx yelled.
"You need to hurry up," Paradise said. "You've been in there for a long time!"
"How do you know?" Phoenyx asked. "You just got back!"
"Because I know everything!" Paradise said.
"You don't know anything. Jersei told you that!"
"Just hurry up and get out the shower, please!"
Paradise got her pajamas ready and stood by the bathroom door, waiting on Phoenyx to get out. She heard the shower cut off and Phoenyx finally came out.
