Chapter One

The Naked Truth

I come naked.
I come unclothed.
No skin,
No flesh,
You see my soul.
I cannot lie
For my eyes do tell
Everything my mouth has ever held.
I'm real as they come,
But angel I'm not.
I have flaws,
In fact a lot,
But hide them,
Never,
For then I'm you,
So go ahead and hate me,
But what I say is true.
Have I lied?
Yes.
And I know what you think.
I thought you were honest?
And you are right indeed.
Eighty-five is the percent I am honest with you.
Ten is the percent I tell half the truth.
Five is the percent I just straight lie,
But never have I met one more honest than I.

The Naked Truth

There is a fine line between being real and being rude. I know at times I tap dance on that line, but I try very hard not to hurt people's feelings when I tell them the truth. The people in my life know I am very blunt, so when they come to me for advice I ask them if they are sure they want to hear what I have to say. Most people don't ask me for my opinion when they want the truth sugar-coated, because they know I hate to lie. I take pride in being honest. I consider myself very down-to-earth, and anyone that knows me is going to know the real me. That being said, I do not act the same way all the time; I am actually a little moody, but I am always myself. I wrote this poem one day after someone close to me insinuated that I lie a lot. Truth be told, I do lie to them sometimes, but that is because it is insanely hard to communicate with them. They think they are right about everything, think you are lying when you are telling the truth, blow everything out of proportion whether you tell them the truth or not, and on top of that they repeat everything you say. I know lying is wrong, but for this person I wish God would make an exception. Despite the fact that I occasionally lie to this person, I consider myself extremely honest, and though I know there are people more honest than me in the world, I don't think I know one personally.

Forgotten

Forgotten we have,
Forgotten the past,
The present,
And the future.
Forgotten the past of our ancestors,
The struggle that they had,
The pain,
The suffering,
The tears,
The sorrow,
The blood shed of those who passed.
Through the torment they persevered,
For the future of our race.
They fought together and worked hard,
But most of us have been a disgrace.
Today the fight is between one another,
For we have forgotten our ancestors' struggle.
Blacks have become atypical and predictable,
Both which are not good,
For we have forgotten what we fought for,
Though we say we understood.
Black and proud is the song we sing,
But that is not really true,
Just a song of joy
To hide the sorrow
That no one is trying hard enough to undo.
No, this poem is not to promote racism.
I am just stating the truth,
That African Americans stand for something,
But who will dare to say,
That we are one,
And individuals,
And we will work together from this day.
Too long too late is what I've heard,
But here is what my ancestors said,
We will work harder and together,
A railroad lies ahead.
Together they brought us to freedom.
Together they brought forth you.
Together sounds good to the ear,
But forgotten is what came true.
Let us not forget to make things right.
Let us not forget to change the future.
Let us remember to work together.
Let us remember our African American future.

What We're About

Collard greens, cornbread, red beans and rice,
Ham hocks, pig feet, sweet potato pie,
That's what the South is all about.
Family, food, music, beer,
Cards, games, chairs, grills,
That's what the South is all about.
Cook-outs, bar-b-ques, family reunions,
Time well-spent with family and friends,
That's what the South is all about.
Understanding each others hurts and pains,
Because we've all been there before,
An undying realness and truth,
Overcomers without a doubt,
That's what the South is all about.

A Tower Fell On Me

I left home expecting to return
On one September day,
And as I entered the building
Something told me to turn away.
I do not know exactly why,
But a tower fell on me.
I heard a boom,
And then a crash,
Then suddenly I could not see.
The building shook,
And the lights went out,
And I heard a lot of mournful screams,
Because what was taking place
Was far beyond anything I had ever seen.
The rumbling never really stopped
Before the other crash,
And the air became so thick
That I could not even gasp.
I do not know exactly how long
I was underneath the tower,
But the smell of death,
And the feel of fire
Was around me for about an hour.
It seemed roughly a day
Before my pain left,
Though my body was now numb
I could still smell the death.
What was happening above the tower
I may never know,
But what happened underneath
Is too much for one poem to show.
What caused the towers to fall
Is now a mystery,
Because on one September day
A tower fell on me.

A Tower Fell On Me

I wrote this poem a while after 9/11. I was still hearing a lot about the stories of families that had lost loved ones. People were building memorials and a war was starting, but I was more interested in how it must have felt to have been in the towers. I had seen how people were still being rescued days after the crash. I couldn't imagine how awful it must have been to have been stuck under all the rumble and debris, surround by dying people. My heart went out to the victims so much. I wrote this poem to tell as best I could how tragic it must have been to have been there.

A Sweet Release

An honest day's work,
A home to come to,
A fresh scent,
A peaceful feel,
Such a sweet release.
The softness of a newborn,
The innocence within,
A soft smile,
A calm sigh,
Such a sweet release.
A lover's gentle touch,
A reassuring embarrass,
A warm hug,
A true kiss,
Such a sweet release.

Dream Big

It's okay to dream,
In life it is a must,
But your goals should be the area
That is your focal point.
Dreams keep us striving for goals.
Achieving goals leads to dreams,
But without goals
There is no way
We can ever achieve anything.

Dream Big

Basically, I think people should make sure their priorities are in order. I grew up in a house built on dreams. When I was sixteen, it crashed and burned. Yes, people can get rich over night, but how often does that happen and the results actually last? We are taught in life to dream, but we are also taught the meaning and importance of long and short term goals. I have people in my life that live their lives based on dreams, but lack goals. They have yet to realize that they are not getting anywhere. Dreams alone do not put food on the table, but dreams combined with realistic goals will.

I Am Your Child

I am a part of you,
But not you.
I came from you,
But I am not yours.
I am under you,
Though beyond you.
I am your child.
I know more than you do,
But not as much.
I am ahead of your time,
But far behind.
I control myself,
But I am controlled by you.
I am your child.
I am your greatest challenge,
But I am no competition.
I am your biggest fear,
But you are not afraid of me.
I have created my own life,
But you created me.
I am your child.

Sweet Sweet Baby

Sweet sweet baby,
Said the woman next to me,
As she walked pushing her buggy,
Her gray hair blowing in the wind.
Sweet sweet baby,
The lady say it again,
As if she had no more words to say,
As if these words gave her joy.
Baby laugh and giggle,
Eyes wide and bright.
I wanted to grab him and run,
My heart trembled with fear.
Who is this lady I not yet know?
What is her connection I not yet have?
Baby closer to God than I have been for years,
Yet, lady closer to Him than I,
If He grant me grace.
Oh, my heart trembled,
But fear baby has none,
But on the lady went,
Patting her hands and grinning.
When she left my heart was at ease,
But my mind still in awe.
Such simple words.
Such complex joy.
Sweet sweet baby,
Sweet sweet baby.

Sticks And Stones

You little tramp,
Her mother called her.
Now a prostitute she is.
You'll never amount to anything,
Now on the corner is where he lives.
You stupid child they called him
Five years before he dropped out.
You crazy fool she heard life long,
Now depressed she is no doubt.
You'll never be good enough for anyone,
Now she's no man's wife.
Sticks and stones can break their bones,
But words can ruin their life.

Sticks and stones

Growing up I was taught that words could not do any damage. I don't know where people got that concept from, but they should certainly take it back. I would rather someone beat me than emotionally abuse me. I consider myself physically strong, but the heart and mind can be fragile. Children are very impressionable, and we should be careful with the words we say to them. We should focus on filling them with encouragement and words of love to ensure a prosperous and successful life for them. Children are our future, so let the words we say be positive ones.

The Depth Of Beauty

As the car door opened,
All I could see were her toes,
Red with polish,
Skin golden to perfection,
Legs as smooth as cream,
Toned,
And petite.
Her hips swayed as she walked
With grace and elegance,
Her waist,
Just right for the hands.
Oh, she was perfect it seemed.
Her hair was long and luscious,
Soft to the touch,
With the face of a goddess,
More beautiful than most,
But in her eye I stopped to stare,
For what I saw surprised me,
For all the beauty she had with her
I couldn't find any there.

A Romantic love

A love so deep is what my heart longs for,
A love so sweet and true.
My hearts desires I can not tell,
But it desires a romantic love with you.
Your tender touch when you hold me,
The warmth and passion you express,
And your secrets are never told
When you whisper them underneath your breathe.
Your kisses are sealed on my lips,
And your I love you's ring loudly in my ear,
And reminiscing on happy memories
Is the only reason why I shed a tear.
As we grow old together our love shall never die,
And when we leave this earth
We'll leave the romantic love between you and I.

A Romantic Love

I didn't write this poem about anyone. Actually I had never been in love at the time, or thought I was, nor had I even had a boyfriend. I found it easier to write about love before I ever experienced it. Love to me at the time was all about passion, happy go lucky days, and daisies. I didn't know anything about the pains of love or losing it. I believe that is one of the reasons I like this poems so much because it is innocent.

To Love

To love like you love,
To care like you care,
It's more than just words, I feel it.
It's more than just a feeling, I know it.
My thoughts are focused around love.
My love is focused around you.
You are the air I breathe,
My morning joy,
That feeling of anticipation that keeps me on my toes.
The thought of knowing you have to leave
Makes me miss you when you're still here.
Your loves so deep I feel I'm drowning,
But you always show me more,
So everyday I'll try to find a way
To love like you love.

To Love

This is another innocent poem. This is my favorite of all the love poems I have written. Some may think other love poems I have written sound better, but I will never lose the peaceful feeling I get when I read this poem because it can never be tainted. This poem reminds me of the young girl I used to be, full of passion and wonder, full of love and life. A young girl who jumped head first into love because she didn't know the dangers of it. But even now as a young woman this poem gives me a good feeling, a hopeful feeling.

How Precious

Oh, how precious it is,
The state of being in love.
There is a vast difference in loving someone
And being in love,
But can one truly be in love alone?
Experience has taught me
That it is true,
But what a painful thing it is.
Because being in love,
And being alone
Only leads to a tragic end.

My Curse

Love can do a lot of things,
That is no mistake.
Love is one of the very emotions
That produces hate.
Love can make you cheat and lie.
Love can make you steal.
Love can make you forsake your loved ones.
Love can make you kill.
I've had many emotions run through my body,
But love has been the worst.
Of all the things I've done and felt
Love has been my curse.

My Curse

Love is one of the strongest forces in this world. Knowing that God is love, I can see how that would make sense. However, worldly love can be dangerous. The power of love can cause people to do, say, and forgive things that they usually wouldn't, but the right kind of love will make one do the right kind of things. False love or wrong love will produce the wrong kind of results. Love carefully.

Love Isn't Blind

There is evidence all around you,
But you just don't want to hear,
The people telling you constantly
The one you love you should fear.
If you don't want to be hurt run,
Don't believe those lies.
Giving the benefit of the doubt
Isn't done often by the wise.
Intuition is given to us to use,
But we seem to neglect it,
But if we trust and get hurt
We don't want to accept it.
We close our eyes tight
And imagine only beauty.
Love isn't blind
We just choose not to see.

Love Isn't Blind

We have all heard love is blind, but is it really? I personally think that people see what they want to see. Yes, love is patient, kind, forgiving, and all those other wonderful things, but it is not blind. Love may not hold a record of hurt, but it knows when it is in pain. People need to see things for what they really are. If it does not look, act, and feel like love then it is not love. It's just that simple.

The Beauty In Lies

Lies rise with sun,
So I say without a word.
Never need to speak the known
What's done in the dark
Is always heard.
Rumors are lies
Based on a fact,
The fact that people wish not to tell,
Hiding the truth behind the sun,
For the sun is the greatest reminder of hell.
If I wished away the sun,
And asked to see the night,
The truth in the darkness
Would have me wish away my sight.
