Gridley Girls by Meredith First

Sometimes you have to go back before you can move forward.

Meg Monahan was born to be a secret keeper. From the moment she became a peer counselor in high school, Meg has been keeping her friends secrets – from sordid family drama to their sex lives – that she never wanted to know. Flash forward to adulthood when Meg is a recruiter for the world’s hippest (and most paranoid) high-tech company – and now Meg is a professional secret keeper.

When sudden tragedy strikes before Meg hosts the wedding of her childhood BFF, Anne Calzaretta, the women are forced to face their past – and their secrets – in order to move on to their future.

In 1978, Meg, Anne, Jennifer, and Tonya were such close friends, they were known as “The Group” in their hometown of Gridley, California. But in ninth grade, their lives were changed forever. Loss, lies, and secrets separated them, but could not break their bonds of friendship.

Thirty years later, Meg and Anne reminisce about those days—dealing with parents, school, boys, sex, love, and betrayal. Anne remembers their freshman year as an easier time, but Meg, still feeling guilty about a betrayal of Anne’s trust, is haunted. Even now, Meg is keeping a secret she’s not prepared to face, let alone share.

In her debut novel, based on true events, Meredith First tells a timeless story about the bonds of friendship, loss, and betrayal—and the forgiveness that is within everyone.

Can anyone really keep a secret forever?

I won a copy of this book from Goodreads. I was not required to give a favorable review. This was a well written book about a time that reminds me so much of the time that I grew up. I loved how each character was described so you got see who each person was and the interaction of them. I had a few friends like that, although we lived in a small town I went to a different school until high school then most of them. I enjoyed how someone kept a history of them in such a wonderful way. Thank you for sharing this book with us.

Meg Monahan still lives in the city where she was raised and is still living with the reputation of being the good girl of the crowd. All of her friends trusted her with their secrets in high school and some she kept and some she may have shared. This has been haunting her and many years later she needs to come clean and clear the air with her childhood friends. This book had chapters that moved from stories of their days in high school to their current story. I loved this format and I honestly enjoyed both the past and the present. In most books where there are two types of stories, I usually prefer one over the other, but this one I really couldn't pick I loved them both! I loved this book that solely focused on friendship. Because this book spans a lot of years, the reader gets to see how female friendships can change and evolve over a range of years. I will definitely be on the lookout for Meredith First's next book!

Enjoyed this book from start to finish. Meg & her group of friends are growing up in the 70's & while I was pretty young then I had fun remembering some of the things they experienced. I love the story line of finding your old diary- I think that would be such a fun way to rediscover the past & who you were then. This is a book that is just plain fun. So glad I read it & look forward to more by this author. Advanced Reader Copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Loved this book. The story was so engaging that it was hard to put the book down. I live in Gridley and know many of the characters personally. She has them all down perfectly. Her mom who I worked with was like she was right there. I could hear her voice she described her so well. This book picks up all the excitement and angst of being a teenager in rural Gridley. This book is a great read. Her style flows so well. I can't wait for the next installment. All should read this to get the feel of small town life in rural California.

I thought this book was very well written and really captured the spirit, the dreams, the questions, the teenage angst and the fears of the unknown of the main character, Meg. She is easily someone I could see myself hanging out with as a teenager. The emotion meter went to the extreme both ways in this book. The tissues were brought out and I nearly peed my pants laughing at some of the hilarious scenes. And, of course, there were a lot of chuckles and bruises along the way. I loved all the sarcastic remarks and just the simple innuendoes like yes, Meg's dad did live in a sorority. It was certainly a delightful read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves to read about friends who grow up together and stay together through thick and thin. And believe me, these girls went through a lot of trials and tribulations just like most teenagers. Huge thanks to Spark Press for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review. I loved it!!! 2 likes ·

Gridley Girls is the story of four girls named Meg, Anne, Jennifer & Tonya, growing up in the 70's and how everything that had happened during their freshman year in high school effected who they became as they got older. With Meg hosting Anne's upcoming wedding, a diary Meg had during her freshman year of high school is found by Anne who starts reading and remembering what life was like back then for the four girls. As Meg remembers that year and with things going on in present day, they are brought back to a time that most would like to forget and how every decision led them to where they are today. I'm torn about this book between liking it and not liking it due to the way the chapters went from one prospective to another without much warning. I found myself skimming the last half of the book just because nothing was making too much sense for me but I do have to admit that what I did read, it was well written and you can tell that Meredith First put her heart into this book. I am gonna have to come back to this book in the future and see what I think of it then but until then, it's gonna be interesting to see what other book Meredith comes out with next!! Thank You to Meredith First for a good debut novel that will make you remember your high school years and be glad that those days are long gone!! I received this book from the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I received this book from the BookSparks Fact To Fiction Book Blog Tour!

Great read!  What a fun trip down memory lane. I laughed and cried as I wandered back through the halls of Gridley High.  This book reminds us that friendships are meant to be cherished and true friendships can and do stand the test of time.  I look forward to Ms First's next book.
