At nine years of age, Logan Weber knows the routine. Keep quiet, make the food last, and don’t ever cause trouble. He’ll do what it takes to evade the rages of his troubled, violent father. Even though he’s only a child, Logan already knows too much—has seen too much.

So when the opportunity presents itself, Logan runs. He has no idea where his journey will lead, or that the grandmother he’s been told is dead is desperately searching for him.

Alone with no home of his own, Logan looks for a safe place to hide. Relying on his instincts and the kindness of strangers, the boy manages to touch the lives of everyone he meets. But his innocent heart cannot survive in the adult world without the most basic human need of all: love.

Logan is a nine year old boy who has suffered too much trauma at the hands of his father. When his mother dies, he becomes mute (kind of like Tommy in the rock opera) and he is told that his grandmother has also died. She was the only one left who really loved him. When the opportunity arises, he finds a way to escape. Being alone at the age of nine is not easy, but somehow Logan manages to survive. He discovers his strength and determination drives his will to live a better life and fortunately for him, he finds some caring people who help him, This was actually a very heart-wrenching story. Whenever I read about neglected or abused children I get angry and so very sad. This poor little boy who thought no one loved him. The story has several points of view in the story, but Logan's is the main one. I didn't have any trouble keeping the different characters straight in my head. As I started with this book, I was not sure how these stories connected, but stick with it. The writing was quite good. Karen McQuestion did a great job moving the main storyline forward even with the shifting points of view. The pace of the story kept me engaged until the end .Even though Logan was an abused and neglected child, it is actually a very uplifting story and I was very satisfied with the ending.

I enjoyed Half a Heart and found it an easy read. The story flowed nicely and the characters, this is a multi-pov character story, were all well written. The main character, Logan, a young nine-year-old boy runs from a broken family and unintentionally gets lost. Without getting into too much detail, Logan meets new people and reminisces about ones he's lost all in the emotional story about a young boy trying to understand how he got where he is. Scared, yet brave, Logan knows he can only go forward and never go back.

This book is both heart breaking and heart warming--it will make you believe in miracles and karma. When a horribly abused, by his father, 9 year old boy finally fears for his life--he runs! He hides in a truck which takes off with him. He finds himself in Wisconsin--no friends--no family. The men driving the truck felt bad and handed him a $5.00 bill. He ultimately went into the gas station store and was very careful about spending that money--he had to make it last. He used the restroom to wash up and then went walking to see if he could find some shelter. He happened upon a tree house which was on an old ladies property--but could not be seen by the house easily. He settled into the tree house and made his way back and forth between there and the store each day. He managed to find food that was left and then spent his last 1.00 on 2 bananas--the shop keeper told him it was his lucky day--buy 2 bananas--get one free! Then a really bad rain storm hit and he hid under the shelter of the old woman's canopy. Actually the dog found him but the woman told him to come on in--made him take a bath and fed him. She noticed the welts on his back. Meanwhile, the grandmother, who his father had told him was dead, was frantically searching for him--unfortunately so was his father---who would reach him first? And what would happen to cause the biggest miracle of all? I really think everyone should read this book--it can't fail to make you think and hope. I do suggest having tissues nearby--both for sad tears and happy ones!

Nine-year-old Logan is living in fear. There are strict rules at home, but his father still manages to find fault in everything Logan does. Logan doesn't speak, he's always hungry because there isn't much to eat, he doesn't have decent clothes and his too small shoes are taped together. Logan's mother died and his father is living with a girlfriend and her mean daughter. Logan's father is often angry and Logan is afraid of what he might do. During one of his worst outbursts, Logan manages to escape and runs away. He doesn't know where to go, but ends up in a moving van, so manages to get away from the city he lives in. Logan hopes his father won't come looking for him. Surviving on his own will be easier than being at home with his father, even if he has no money and no place to stay. Will he be able to remain undiscovered? Logan's grandmother is looking for her grandson. Because Logan's father moves around a lot and doesn't want her to know his address she's lost contact. Logan thinks his grandmother, the only person in the world who still cared about him, is dead. Everyone he loves eventually leaves him. Does Logan's grandmother have a chance to find her grandson? Half a Heart is a beautiful moving story. Logan is a sweet and smart boy. It was heartbreaking to read about his home situation. I had tears in my eyes because of the way Logan's father treats his son. I love it when an author can make me feel so much. Logan is courageous and resilient and I admired his spirit. He's such a wonderful main character. His story is one big adventure that comes from a nasty situation. He never despairs and he comes up with a solution for every problem. Finding out if there would be happiness in Logan's future kept me on the edge of my seat. I read his story in one sitting, Half a Heart is a book that definitely touched my heart. Karen McQuestion's writing has such a nice easy flow, which makes it possible to completely focus on the story. She skillfully translates what's happening in the mind of a nine-year-old, which is an amazing achievement and alternates between several equally captivating main characters, which makes the story interesting from beginning to end. I loved the kindhearted women in her story. Logan's grandmother is a fantastic person and Logan meets people on his journey who are equally gorgeous inside. I was totally enchanted by Half a Heart, it's such a brilliant story filled with many impressive layers, hope and unconditional love. I highly recommend this impressive book.

This is a rather unusual book. Imagine a story where there are many more likable people than unlikeable. The "unlikeable" people will cause more troubles and put fear in everyone's hearts. A young mute boy, treated with unbelievable cruelty by his father, accidentally escapes from his home. His experiences afterward show him how much good is in the world. He meets people who are working through their own difficulties, yet so kind, caring and anxious to help others. Their good intentions for the young boy are impeded by his inability to communicate. As the story unfolds, the boy realizes he is able to survive on his own and confronts his father. There are some side-plots that make the reading even more enjoyable. It is absolutely refreshing to read a novel with so much goodness shown. Each character gives freely and openly from the heart. Something we should all be following!

MY REVIEW OF “HALF A HEART” BY KAREN McQUESTION Kudos to Karen McQuestion, Author of “Half a Heart” for writing such an emotional, significant, and thought-provoking story. The genre for this story is Fiction. The topics discussed in this story are important issues that happen in society today. The Author describes her characters as flawed, complicated and complex possibly due to the circumstances. If you are emotional like me, be sure to have Kleenex ready. The father in the story is an angry alcoholic, living in a dysfunctional way. He is portrayed as a bully and takes his anger out on his 9-year-old son Logan. Logan has been emotionally traumatized and physically abused by the hands of his father. Terrified of his father, Logan runs away. Besides the emotional and physical scars that 9 year old Logan has, he can’t speak. From what he has seen, psychologically, Logan can’t talk. He is mute. His mother is dead. He has been told his beloved Grandmother has died. What is so disturbing to me, that in Logan’s adventures, no one seems to want to see a neglected skinny boy, with a taped shoe. Fortunately, there have been a few wonderful and kind teachers in his life. Logan is resourceful and manages to hide, and get food for a few days. The people he seems to meet are kind and concerned. Not only do some people touch Logan’s life, but Logan has made a difference in a few people’s life as well. I like that there is a lovable dog in the story as well. Logan doesn’t know his Grandmother is alive, has been searching for him. She has hired a detective. His abusive father kept moving around, and purposely excluded her from Logan’s life. Logan’s Grandmother knows that the father is a very dangerous man. The Grandmother keeps tearfully saying that Logan is “half of her heart”. How will Logan be safe? Will his Grandmother be able to find Logan? I appreciate that the author brings up such significant issues as physically and emotionally abused children, bullying, alcoholism, addiction and violence. What does it take to help the victims, and stop the violence? The author also discusses the importance of family, friends, hope and love. I would highly recommend this novel for those who read fiction. I received an Advanced Reading Copy from NetGalley for my honest review.
