Overview

Happy Hour at Casa Dracula (Casa Dracula Series #1)

Vampires don't exist in this day and age...or do they?

Milagro De Los Santos needs to get her career on track — and a sexy man to come home to. At a party for her ex-boyfriend, she meets the unusually attractive Oswald Grant, who sweeps her off her feet. But when he bites her in the heat of passion and she instantly falls ill, Milagro realizes Oswald is not just any fabulous man — he's a vampire. Whisked away to his family's estate to recover, Milagro learns the ins and outs of vampirism while falling for a wickedly inappropriate man. But when the vampires' lives are threatened, Milagro uses her wits, her wiles, and an incredibly whacky scheme to bring down a power-mad secret society that refuses to let the undead live and love in peace.

I've been a little burned out on vampire characters so I was hesitant to try this book but I'm soooo glad I did because it was wonderful!! The writing is snappy and intelligent and the characters are people you really like and care about. I wasn't only happily surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, I was HOOKED! I immediately checked all my local bookstores for the next two in the series and when I couldn't find Midnight Brunch I immediately ordered it online! Head and shoulders above most of the vampire books out there, Marta Acosta has developed a series that is laugh out-loud funny, but also one that touches on so many important and sensitive issues, and she handles them with grace without being preachy. I can't recommend this series enough!! I only hope she keeps writing about the Grant clan at Casa Dracula for a long time!!

Milagro de Los Santos has the worst luck with jobs and men, neither of which ever seem to be the right fit. Forced to attend a party for her ex-boyfriend, Sebastian, the night starts looking up when Milagro meets an attractive stranger, Oswald. A heated kiss draws blood and soon Milagro isn't feeling well. It's not long before Sebastian develops a renewed interest in her, and Milagro quickly discovers that he's using her for information she might have on Oswald. Now she's in the middle of an ongoing struggle between a dark organization, and the vampire community she never knew existed. Not that Oswald's family would ever own up to being vampires. Oswald Grant is a man with a medical condition that leaves him sensitive to light, and gives him an odd craving for blood. Meeting Milagro wasn't the wisest move, but kissing her was completely out of line. Now that he's infected her, his enemies are after her as well. Oswald has little choice but to protect her, so Milagro becomes a guest at the Grant family ranch in the country. The Grants will do everything in their power to keep Milagro away from the trouble that awaits her just outside of their home, but there's only so much they can do to save Milagro from herself. Happy Hour at Casa Dracula is a laugh-out-loud vampire romance. For all of their differences, Milagro and Oswald make a marvelous couple. With a delightfully unique approach, Ms. Acosta pens a passionate vampire romance filled with friendship, love and life threatening adventure. This deliciously sexy tale will hook you with clever chapter titles and dazzle you with its witty dialogue. A fabulous story that you don't want to miss. copied from Kimberly Swan at DARQUE REVIEWS www.darquereviews.blogspot.com

Ms Acosta has truly amazed me. I have come to realize that the best books are the ones that you imperatively must put down while reading because you are truly part of the story and must emotionally and mentally debate with yourself and the characters. It is during those moments of necessary (if unrequited) debate that honest, true, and objective self-introspection occurs. The truly best books manage this and yet it isn't a chore to read; rather reading it reminds you of how full, vibrant and beautiful life is. Many books end leaving the reader with a sense of completion; the Casa Dracula series leaves the reader with a sense of joy and the sweet reminder that the gift of life is is life, itself with its ups and downs, its sorrows and its happiness. The journey of life is a precious thing. Milagro, Ms Acosta's main charactor and the narrator of the story, grows throughout the books. I found myself so annoyed with her at times, but it wasn't from anger, rather from true empathy: you feel her emotional growth, her fears, her laughter even if you, the reader, objectively see what she cannot. In fact, that's really what this book is. It isn't a vampire novel, or a romance, or a paranormal romance. It is a series of books detailing the journey from the dreamy world of our innocent youth, to the harsh world of abrasive reality, to the final culmination in which dreams and reality are balanced and no longer mutually exclusive, but rather two halves of the same whole. The books are sneaky: you don't really see the journey because you are so rivetted in the moment.. just like life. There's incredible amounts of humor, some natural drama, adventure, action, gorgeous guys, beautiful women.. this series is truly a favorite. It never feels like a lecture, instead it reads as would any paranormal romance/action fiction... I think this is such an amazing read. Despite its depth, you never feel overwhelmed, it is very, very lighthearted. Casa Dracula "feels" like a beach read, so simple and easy, but its anchoring truth is so much deeper, in the end Again.. it is so much fun to read.. if you want romance, sex, action, drama, loveable characters and a lighthearted feeling, read this series! You'll get all that and more. ;)

I have read this book twice and it's just as enjoyable as the 1st time I read it. It's witty and funny and I can sympathize with Miss Milagros and at times her erratic but funny thought patterns. This character is real and the writing and genre I can't get enough of..I literary read the book in two days. I can't wait to read her next adventure..
