CHAPTER 1

"Bugger me, Booker. You've been lusting after one woman for ten years?" Booker's soon-to-be brother-in-law's voice held a note of incredulity even the windy ride in the convertible Jag couldn't cover.

"I've known her for ten years," Booker corrected, and stared at the full moon shining down on him like an interrogator's spotlight from the unrelenting blackness of night sky. "Lust didn't factor in for the first few. When I was a rookie, she was Montenido's poster girl for at-risk teens — a high-school kid with the body of a bikini model, zero parental supervision, and a rebellious streak a mile wide. I felt protective, because she attracted every predatory asshole within a fifty-mile radius, and she was too young to know better."

"Okay," Aaron inclined his shaved head, and moonlight glanced off the ladder of silver rings studding his right ear, "I stand corrected. But after she graduated?"

Yes, after that his protective instincts had turned into something trickier, because he'd been forced to face the maddening reality he could no longer bust any adult male who came sniffing around. But for him, she'd still been off-limits. "You mean when she was eighteen and I was twenty-four?"

Aaron had the decency to wince, because despite the shaved head, beard, tats, and tendency to swear like a sailor — albeit a British one — his moral compass aimed due North. "Point taken. Still, somewhere between past and present, you never thought, 'Now's the bloody time'?"

Sure he had. Sometime during the last handful of years, Booker's life had become an exercise in self-restraint as he'd watched her sample men like candy. Fair enough. She deserved a chance to indulge her curiosity. Life had afforded him the same opportunity, and he'd taken full advantage.

She'd never shown an interest in going back for seconds, which made it easier to bide his time, but the I-dare-you flicker in her eyes every time she glanced his way told him he wasn't the only one feeling the pull between them. Pull or no, he wasn't interested in being the flavor of the night, so timing counted.

"Now's the time," he muttered.

"Huh?" Aaron pulled up to a four-way stop behind a red Mercedes. "What are you going to do, wankstain? Make the turn or sit there and blink your signal all night?"

Booker ignored the rhetorical questions aimed at the driver in front of them. The past twelve months, he'd found himself running out of noble reasons to resist the temptation of Lauralie Peterson. Now, he was flat out. He couldn't tell himself she was still playing. She'd gotten serious — professionally, at least. She'd opened Babycakes Bakery, and invested every bit of her talent, energy, and hard-earned capital into it. With her business taking off, he figured she was ready to bring a similar sense of purpose to her personal life.

Well, ready might be an overstatement. The woman had an inborn pride that demanded she always stand on her own two feet. She wasn't an island, mind you. She had friends. She had family — the fucked-up variety, but still, the ties existed. Yet heaven forbid she need anyone.

She had to get past that particular hang-up, because there was going to be need between them. A whole hell of a lot of need. He'd do his damnedest to satisfy every one of hers, but when he'd resolved to make this the year he tugged on the invisible tether binding them, he'd known getting close would bring a crash course in need. For both of them.

Odds seemed good she'd require a push. Fine. He knew how to push, and he knew when.

"Now's the time," he repeated, a little louder. When he'd hauled her underaged ass home from Nido Beach on New Year's Eve a decade ago, and refused her reckless offer to show her appreciation, he'd told her they could revisit the topic in ten years. At the time, he'd tossed the answer out as a way to brush her back, and emphasize how much growing up she still had to do regardless of how physically mature she looked. But ten years had turned into ... well ... ten fucking years, and time was up. Tonight.

"Far be it for me to criticize a man's timing, but did you not just spend the better part of the evening going shot-for-shot with my bride-to-be?"

Booker glanced over in time to catch the look Aaron cast at him. "So?"

"So, no offense, mate, but you may not be in the best shape to make your move."

"What, you think I'm impaired?"

"I reckon, yeah, and it would serve you right. What kind of plonker gets shitfaced with his sister on New Year's Eve?"

"I didn't get shitfaced. And for the record, she challenged me. If she hadn't been cheerleading Mom's efforts to pair me up with an eligible bachelorette of her choosing in time for the wedding, I wouldn't have resorted to drinking her under the table." When Kate had tossed out the bet — if she downed the most shots, she got to pick his date for the wedding — he'd willingly cracked the seal on the bottle himself. His sister was notoriously overconfident when it came to wagers. A hundred and twenty pounds and a preference for wine ensured him an easy victory, and the only thing four shots of Jack prevented him from doing tonight was getting behind the wheel. "I only wish my mother was as easily outmaneuvered."

"Your mum didn't build Best Life into a billion dollar brand by being easily outmaneuvered," Aaron noted.

"No, she did not. She got there by being bossy as hell and thinking she knows what's best for everyone. And now, thanks to you and Kate infecting her with wedding fever, she's decided what's best for me is a trip down the aisle. It's past time she accepted a simple fact — I don't need her help managing my life." He folded his arms. "I've got my own plans."

"About your so-called plans ... are you storming into this party with your balls out and your guns blazing, or shall we aim for something a tad more discreet?"

"You get rid of the guests. I'll handle the rest." He could already picture her, breathless and ready as he braced her against the nearest surface and unleashed half a decade's worth of repressed longings. Fuck her so thoroughly she'd have no standing to dismiss the event as a heat-of-the-moment hookup. He was coming for her. Her, dammit, and he hadn't waited this long only to be shown the door after one energetic encounter.

So yes, he'd use the chemistry to land him in her bed, but from there it was on him to convince her the connection between them couldn't simply be sweated out of their systems. He had to get it through her hard head and fortified heart that he intended to stick around, and figure out where "they" led. Storming in tonight with the element of surprise on his side might work. Or it might blow up in his face. Either way, he was done waiting.

Aaron's eyes widened as he pulled to the curb in front of her apartment. People milled on the front lawn, and the small porch. Music blasted from the open windows of her ground-floor unit, layering over the sounds of laughter and conversation. "Oh, sure. I'll just wave my magic wand and make everyone disappear."

"Delaney's is within walking distance. Drinks are on you. Say it loud and then step aside."

"You want me to buy drinks for fifty friggin' people?" He didn't flinch. "You want to marry my sister?"

"I'll dance to this tune until Valentine's Day, Book, but once she says 'I do' the 'want-to-marry-my-sister?' shite ends, and I'm no longer your wench."

Booker smiled and popped the door. "I count six long weeks between now and February fourteenth. Lead the way, wench."

He had a woman to claim.

* * *

"Sounds like you've got the whole town packed into your apartment."

Laurie pushed the phone to her ear to hear over the din of the party. She wasn't about to let a little logistical challenge like Chelsea's recent move to Maui for work keep them from ringing in the New Year together. "It's a little bigger than I planned." Behind her, a cork exploded out of a bottle, followed by an approving roar of appreciation. "And louder. But what the hell, it's New Year's Eve, and ... hey — !"

She broke off as a helpful soul refilled her flute, and splashed a liberal amount of ice-cold Korbel down the front of her silver sequin top in the process. The white, silk shorts that ended high on her thighs fared better, thank God, because one errant spill and those suckers would be see-through. Her strappy, silver heels survived unscathed — though the same couldn't be said for her protesting arches. As soon as the party ended, she planned to ditch the sandals.

Normally she might invite someone to help her work the kinks out. A strapping candidate with strong hands, who knew when to be gentle, when to be firm, and when to advance a foot rub to a full-body massage, but more and more lately only one man sprang to mind, and he was absolutely out of the question, as well as not in attendance, so ... Her doorbell chimed, ringing through the chaos of music and laughter.

"Shit." She plucked her top away from her chest and started toward her door even as the nearest guest pulled it open.

"Everything okay?" Chelsea asked.

"Nothing a trip to the dry cleaner won't fix ... Shit."

"What now?"

Had she conjured him with one unguarded thought? Maybe, because a breath-stealing span of shoulders filled her doorframe. "I don't believe this. Booker's darkening my doorstep."

"Ethan Booker? Sheriff Ethan Booker?"

"Yes, and yes." Not in uniform, no, but otherwise looking as authoritative, and — damn her perverse hormones — hot as ever in a charcoal V-neck that did all kinds of justice to his shoulders and chest, and dark pants that did justice to everything else. The porch light found the sun-streaked strands in his thick brown hair and turned them copper.

"What do you think he wants?"

"No clue."

Perverse or not, no red-blooded woman could deny Booker was an eyeful, but she ought to be used to it. She'd been looking her fill for a while. In the years since rookie Booker had first hauled her sorry ass home from Nido Beach, he'd worked his way up the ladder of command to sheriff, and she'd outgrown her juvenile rebellions. Mostly. She owned a business, paid taxes, and, aside from a few speeding tickets, abided by the laws like any upstanding member of society. Didn't matter. Booker's assessing stare always regressed her to teenaged troublemaker at the same time it sent her grown-up sex-drive surging.

She was no longer a wayward delinquent resorting to reckless behavior in a desperate search for the attention she didn't get at home, but only a blind woman would miss the fact that he saw a shadow of that girl when he looked at her. And he looked at her a lot. As if he knew exactly what his quiet stare did to her. As if he was biding his time.

"Think he got a noise complaint?" Chelsea asked.

All her neighbors were here, so it seemed unlikely, but she raised her chin and channeled the defiance she defaulted to whenever Booker appeared. "So what if he did? It's New Year's Eve, for God's sake."

While she watched, those keen eyes scanned the room. For her.

Someone killed the music, and people started cheering.

Ten ... The walls of her apartment shook as revelers broke into the countdown. "Ten lousy seconds and the party will be over anyway. What's the point of barging in now, except to be a hard-ass?"

Nine ... "Maybe he wants to wish you a happy New Year?"

Eight ... "Yeah, right. From a jail cell."

Seven ... Booker's attention locked on her. Her stomach took a free fall, as usual. She realized she was worrying the corner of her thumbnail and made herself cut it out.

Six ... "Uh-oh. He spotted me." His gaze turned oddly ... purposeful. No other word fit the lowered brows and tractor-beam stare. The man was clearly on a mission, and the determination in his expression raised the tiny hairs on her arm. Whatever he wanted, it had nothing to do with a noise complaint. Booker's voice echoed through her mind from a full decade ago. We can revisit the topic in ten years.

Five ... "Don't assume the worst."

Four ... She downed her champagne, and set the glass on an end table while he shouldered his way through her small, packed living room. Her rapid pulse rushed the bubbles straight to her head.

Three ... "I better go."

Two ... "Happy New Year. Call me tomorrow, okay?"

One ... "I may only get one phone call. Happy New Year's, Chels."

Booker took her phone, hit disconnect, and slipped it into his back pocket at the same time confetti went flying and the room erupted into shouts of "Happy New Year!"

"Hey, give me my pho —"

His mouth crashed down on hers. Strong fingers sank into her hair, and ... holy hell. However many years she'd had to envision this moment, one thing became startlingly apparent. She'd failed to adequately prepare for it. Waves of excitement and alarm rolled through her at the realization.

Then again, how could she have prepared for Booker's kiss? How could she prepare for this much intensity, and all this hunger?

His mouth moved on hers, parting her lips wider, then wider still, and just when she'd gotten a grip on his shoulders and started to make a move of her own, he swept in with long, deep strokes she couldn't resist. Didn't want to resist. And he was so sure she wouldn't he didn't even hurry, simply kept up the slow, commanding slide of his tongue. She didn't consider herself the kind of woman who obeyed commands, but he was dragging them somewhere she desperately wanted to go. A place she'd fantasized about for too long. Though it wasn't smart, or particularly sane, she took two fistfuls of his very nice, very expensive sweater, and held on.

From somewhere nearby, a voice yelled, "Take it to the pub, yanks. First round's on me." In a vague recess of her mind, she registered people leaving, calling their thanks as they squeezed past, but she didn't respond. More urgent priorities demanded her attention. Priorities like the scrape of his rough jaw against her skin, and whisper-soft cashmere covering hard muscles. Her hands found a route under his sweater and raced along his warm, smooth, withstand-anything back.

"Aaand we're out. Cheers to you. Happy New Year." The door closed, and she sensed without looking they had the apartment to themselves. Apparently he sensed it too, because the next thing she knew, he'd backed her up against the hallway wall. He pulled his mouth away long enough to level a serious look at her. "Ground rules."

"Uh-uh." Rules would require negotiation, and negotiation implied they had more at stake here than rampant lust. In other words, negotiation would ruin this. She wrapped her arms around his neck, came up on her toes, and sank her teeth into his upper lip. He groaned, and slammed his hips into hers. The position pinned her to the wall, and gave her a forceful preview of what he had in store for her. Her body responded with a rush of anticipation guaranteed to send her silk shorts to the dry cleaners along with her champagne-splashed top. Against the lip she'd just abused, she murmured, "Booker, don't confuse me with one of your well-bred, easily-shocked, country-club girls. I'm not well-bred and nothing shocks me. My only rules are fast, hard, and so filthy dirty it leaves a stain on your soul."

CHAPTER 2

Her words put to rest ground rule number one. Express mutual consent. Too bad the accord he sought involved a hell of a lot more than fast, hard, and dirty. He pushed her wild mane of blond corkscrew curls back from her forehead, framed her face with his hands — okay, trapped her — and waited until she looked him in the eye. Hers brimmed with impatience, which made him all the more determined to go slow. "Declining a review of the ground rules constitutes your agreement to everything I've got in mind."

The smart-ass gave him a wide-eyed, innocent look. "My goodness, Sheriff. Are you going to whip out your cuffs and restrain me? Push me up against the wall and give me a thorough frisking?" Her smile returned, sly and defiant. "Should I assume the position while you unholster your big, dangerous weapon?"

Graphic images played in his mind, and challenged his commitment to go slow. Some things hadn't changed in ten years. She still liked to test the boundaries. He held his ground and returned her cagey smile. "You've given this a lot of thought, haven't you, Lauralie?"

## DISAPPOINTED. That's how I feel about this book. I loved the first one of this series (chelsea's story), and so many others by Ms. Beck. However, this one - not so much. I didn't like either of these characters. The heroine depised her mother (with good reason), yet she was acting just like her. One night stand after one night stand. Yuck. Who would want a woman so used. And the hero left a lot to be desired as well. He manipulated the heroine through the entire book. I didn't like when he proposed the "deal" and let the heroine think she was his 2nd choice. That he was on the rebound. He never cleared that up. He didn't communicate well. At all. He let her think negative thoughts instead of being straight with her. I get why she tried pushing him away. With her upbringing, she needed encouragement, caring words, reassurance, but instead he kept giving her ultimatums and walking off. All 3 times, she had to crawl to him. Again, very one sided. I'm sorry, I can't recommend this book. The characters were too unlikeable which made for a frustrating read.

RATING 4.5 STARS Hard Compromise is book two in the Compromise Me series by Samanthe Beck. I loved the first book of this series so was so excited to get Chelsea’s best friend, Laurie’s story, and the man who wanted her heart, Ethan Booker. Laurie Peterson was raised by a woman whose best friend was alcohol. Having a daughter was merely an inconvenience. Laurie grew up in Montenido, California with Chelsea being her only real friend. At age sixteen, Laurie would have done just about anything to gain some attention, which is how she first met then rookie cop, Ethan Booker. He saved her from herself on that beach ten years ago. Over the following ten years, Ethan looked out for Laurie, mostly without her knowledge. But Ethan has waited long enough. He is the sheriff now and Laurie owns her own bakery. It’s time to claim what he’s waited what feels like a life time for. Laurie keeps people at a distance, except for her best friend. She can’t afford to let anyone in to her inner crazy life. A life where her mother could turn up at any time and reek havoc, which she often does. So on that New Year’s Eve when Ethan showed up at her New Year’s Eve party and showed her just exactly how he wanted to celebrate, she was all in. But it would only be the one time. Then she’d kick him out just like she always did. What Laurie didn’t realize is that Ethan had other plans altogether. “Laurie Peterson didn’t lean on anyone. She gave out advice. She supplied a shoulder to cry on, not vice versa. Chelsea was the only possible exception.” “You belong to yourself. You look after yourself.” Laurie’s New Year’s Day, though, didn’t have a very good start. First, one of those surprise visits from her mother. And then, her beloved bakery that she had scrimped and saved to get it off it’s feet, burned to the ground. But Booker stood by her and pledged his support. He said he would have her back. But Laurie knew that wouldn’t happen. Not if he knew what her life was really like. I have to admit that at first, I didn’t warm to Ethan right away. He was so…is abrupt the right word? He was very methodical about the way he pursued Laurie. But the more I got to know him, the more I got to know Laurie, I realized that he had to do things that way. She was scared to death, ready to run at any time. So I have to give Ethan credit for knowing her more than she knew herself. He found ways to keep her tied to him, to keep her in his bed, until her heart would finally realize that he could be part of her life, that she could trust and depend on him. That she didn’t have to keep running. “She could stuff her own feelings into a box and lock them away where they couldn’t do any damage - hardly any. She’d practiced the skill her entire life. But this? Nothing had prepared her for this.” I do have to admit that this one kind of broke my heart. I mean, Laurie’s life, her mom, really was awful. And I am in love with Ethan’s family. His mom is a hoot! I am in love with the ending of this. I actually swooned. I can’t wait to read the third book in this series, Arden and the sexy Dr. Nick get their story in Compromised in Paradise. I am so glad I have had the opportunity to read this series and get to know Samanthe’s work. I’m just loving it.

In case I haven’t said it before, Samanthe Beck is one of my favorite authors. It’s like she writes her heroes just for me. Now, I admit that it has taken me awhile to read Hard Compromise. My bad. I don’t know what I was thinking. The story starts ten years ago on New Year’s Eve at Nido Beach in Montenido, California. A then sixteen-year-old Lauralie Peterson was caught drinking and partying with a group of frat boys. Twenty-two-year-old Deputy Ethan Booker was her saving grace. Lauralie offered to repay Ethan the only way she knew how. He turned down her advancements with the promised declaration of “Jailbait, we can revisit the topic in ten years.” Fast forward ten years. Ethan Booker is now the sheriff. Lauralie “Laurie” Peterson is now on the straight and narrow. She hasn’t been in trouble with the police since she was sixteen. In fact, she is the owner of Babycake’s Bakery. On this New Year’s Eve, Ethan is going to make good on his promise and finally have a shot at the one woman he’s been keeping tabs on for ten years. I love that Ethan is so sure of himself and how good things can be between him and Laurie. He has this ability to see into her soul and see everything she hides from other people. I like Laurie’s strength and determination to overcome her upbringing. Since she was young, she’s had to take care of herself. Her mother was more concerned about herself and having a good time. She could care less about having a child. Unfortunately, not a lot has changed on that front. Except now, Denise uses Laurie as her personal ATM machine and threatens to destroy everything Laurie has built for herself. I love Hard Compromise because ultimately that’s what Ethan and Laurie do to be together. They compromise. Laurie opens herself up to allow herself to depend not only on herself but Ethan and others. Ethan learns that he has to give up some control. While he has the ability to help Laurie and save her from her mother and the world, he has to let her fight her own battles. “I’ll always have your back.” I’m looking forward to the next installment in this series. **Received a copy from Entangled Publishing and voluntarily reviewed.**

This night was one super-hot scorcher to remember. Unfortunately, it was not just for the impulsive one nighter of mindless passion with hot as sin Ethan Booker. On top of the internal glow, she was melting at the fact that the one thing in the world she worked so hard for was taken away from her in one night. Burned to the ground. Now Ethan, might I say again, sexy as sin Sheriff has a proposal for her that she may just want to take him up on. I had a good time reading this one. I was all ready for a sexy, sinfully delicious sheriff. Oh yes, I got that. Then I also got Laurie. These two have waited a long time to act on feeling, desires, impulses. Whatever you want to call them. To have someone else want to step in a make a mess of it all. It was sweet, sassy, sexy, and just plain delightful. There was enough of the read to get enjoyment, not feel confused, have questions answered, and get a good feel for both Ethan and Laurie. What’s next in the Compromise Me series?

I loved Booker, and Laurie's not too bad either. ;) Together, they're absolutely awesome! Everyone but Laurie knew from the get-go that this fake relationship was going to turn into the real thing, but watching her come to that conclusion was a lot of fun. Hot, steamy, awkward-meeting-his-mother kinds of fun. Ms. Beck definitely did not disappoint with this one--I found myself laughing almost as much as I needed to fan myself while reading this one. The whole I'll-wait-ten-years-for-you-to-grow-up thing was kind of random--I appreciated the prologue, don't get me wrong; it did a great job of setting these two up for a future when she wasn't literal "jailbait"--but why exactly ten years? Sure, she ended up being in a much better place at 26 than she was at 16, but technically anytime after she turned 21 would have been acceptable. He wasn't that much older than her. (Plus, it kind of reminded me of another dating-you-in-ten-years comment, and though the situations are totally different, who needs that reminder?) Still, the way Booker got them started was cute. Poor Aaron and his Am Ex card. Hard Compromise takes place concurrently with book one in the series, Compromising Her Position , so it doesn't really matter which one you read first--they both could work as standalones, but trust me, you're going to want the whole story so you might as well grab them both. As well as book three--surely we're going to get Arden's (Rafe's sister) story soon, yes? Rating: 4 stars / B+ I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

This one is steamy. Have those cold glasses of water handy. This is ten years in the making for Laurie and Ethan. Ethan is not letting any more time go by before he makes his move. Laurie owns a bakery which drew me to this book. I really enjoyed this one. It has the heat, but it also has depth. Laurie has a run of some really bad luck and my heart goes out to her. Ethan makes things a little more bearable, but can she trust what's going on with Ethan? Ethan is definitely a dirty talker and I love how he wants to be there for Laurie, but is he willing to wait a little longer on Laurie?

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog*** Hard Compromise by Samanthe Beck Book Two of the Compromise Me series Publisher: Entangled Brazen Publication Date: November 21, 2016 Rating: 4 stars Source: eARC from NetGalley ***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers*** Summary (from Goodreads): Laurie Peterson assumes her impulsive one-night stand with sinfully sexy Sheriff Ethan Booker is the biggest surprise of the year…until her bakery burns down while she’s basking in the afterglow. It looks like her dreams are up in smoke, but then Ethan proposes a deal too tempting to resist. Ethan has no intention of settling for a one-night stand with Laurie. Nor does he want anything to do with the women his wealthy family wants him to meet. Not when he’s waited ten years for his chance to make his move. His deal might have strings—and Laurie may not know the stakes—but nothing will stop this sexy cop from staking a real claim on her body and her heart. What I Liked: Okay. I was not disappointed, folks. Brazen's recent novels have been rather lackluster, but I had high hopes for this novel. Samanthe Beck's books are so swoony, sexy, steamy, and sweet, and this one was no exception. I adore her books, and this series especially! Ethan Booker has waited ten years for a chance to be with wild Laurie Peterson, and he isn't letting the chance go to waste. Sure, he comes from a rich family and she comes from a much more "disgraceful" background. But he knows what - who - he wants, and it's Laurie. Laurie is an impulsive commitment-phobe, and she wants Ethan as badly as he wants her. But she knows she's not good enough for him, especially with their different backgrounds. But Ethan isn't a guy to back down, and his deal that he offers her is temporary at first, but hopefully for life. You'd think I wouldn't enjoy this book, because Laurie, on paper, is not the type of heroine that I like. She's wild and impulsive, slightly irrational and a total commitment-phobe. She avoids commitments like they are rashes, so she has a lot of hook-ups but no real relationships. She is hot and cold with Ethan Booker, pushing and pulling, throwing herself at him and then running away. Theoretically, *I* shouldn't like her. But I did. I understood her. Sure, she has a lengthy sexual history, a ridiculous outlook on commitment, and more in common with her tramp mother than she wants to admit. But Laurie is also a hard worker, a tough lady, and someone who doesn't like to ask for help. I felt for her, even if I wanted to push her at Ethan and make her stay there. Ethan... woah. Holy alpha male. He's an alpha male but not a crazy overprotective one. He's sweet and genuine and alpha all at once - it's hard to describe. This is something that I love about Beck's heroes - they're sexy alphas, but they're also sweet, considerate, and decidedly more real than most alpha males in romance novels. Like, I could see Ethan being an actual guy in real life, and not because he's a hot sheriff. Ethan is a sweetheart as much as he is a sexy guy. I like how he is patient with Laurie, but he's also firm and goes after what he wants. He waits for her, but then he also goes in for what he wants. It's a good balance of letting Laurie be but also satisfying them both. Read the rest of my review on my blog, The Eater of Books! - eaterofbooks DOT blogspot DOT com :)

4 stars Hard Compromise was a well written and very entertaining heartfelt read. The storyline captured my attention from the get go, I found myself turning the pages late into the night as I didn't want to put it down! Laurie and Ethan/Booker were great characters, I enjoyed watching their relationship unfold. They had a strong connection/attraction that you could feel through their words and actions. They made me laugh with their banter and stubbornness, they also frustrated me with said stubbornness lol And the chemistry between them was smoking hot! But most of all they made me swoon with their love, these two truly earned their happily everafter. Author Samanthe Beck writes with passion and once again she's delivered a beautiful, emotional and smoking hot read in Hard Compromise. This is the second book in the Compromise Me series, each book can be read as a standalone and I highly recommend them both!

Awesome 2nd chance romance between older man/younger woman Oh yes , this was one of my favorite books by Samantha Beck. Her new series Compromise Me is riveting and book 2 Hard Compromise is White Hot!! In book 2- you have this sensual , sexual story about Ethan Booker finally making his move to get the girl he has always been in love with. 10 years ago he had this “run-in” with Laurie Peterson where there were sparks that were so hot , hotter than the sun. But Laurie was underage and Ethan warned her away due to her age. 10 years later, Laurie has grown up, thanks to herself and no one else. She came from the wrong side of the tracks and had to raise pretty much herself. Sheriff Ethan Booker shows back up in Lil Laurie Peterson’s life 10 years later to see how she is doing and Laurie cant help how her heart skips a beat at the sight of the handsome older man. Ethan has been lusting and secretly loving Laurie for ten years and he is ready to claim her because he feels she is ready to accept him emotionally and physically in her life. But he cant come out and say that to her face, nope he has to come out with an excuse so he uses one that she will buy but not all is right in Laurie’s life. Her bakery has burned down and her sleazy mother is back in her life , leeching off her yet again. This is enough to drive her insane. Will Ethan and Laurie get a chance at that love that has always been there while finding out who is determined to drive Laurie out of town ? Or will Laurie give up and give in before finding her true love . I really enjoyed this 2nd chance romance between the older man/younger woman scenario that the author wrote. Oh I loved the background and the setup that was written. The heartache the heroine had to go thru in her life was rough but she definitely had a champion in Ethan. I do wish he hadn’t waited 10 years and showed up sooner but I can understand why he waited. Laurie was a strong heroine and she was a good fit for the hero. My rating: 4.4 stars **** "I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

: HARD COMPROMISE is the second installment in Samanthe Beck’s contemporary, adult COMPROMISE ME erotic, romance series. This is Sheriff Ethan Booker, and pastry chef/bakery owner Lauralie ‘Laurie’ Peterson’s story line. HARD COMPROMISE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Told from dual third person perspectives (Laurie and Booker) HARD COMPROMISE follows the building relationship between Sheriff Ethan Booker and pastry chef Laurie Peterson. Ten years earlier twenty two year old police officer Ethan Booker took it upon himself to ‘safe guard’ a much younger, sixteen year old Laurie Peterson. For ten years Ethan waited; bided his time until the girl with whom he fell in love transformed herself into an independent and beautiful young woman, and Ethan Booker decided it was time to claim the woman his heart knew belonged to him. But Laurie’s life comes with baggage in the form of an alcoholic and abusive mother who is constantly demanding money or more, and Laurie’s bakery recently burned to the ground. Ethan will offer up a proposal that benefits them both but losing her heart was never what Laurie in mind. The relationship between Laurie and Booker is one of immediate attraction but Laurie refuses to add her baggage to Booker’s life. Booker comes from a well-to-do family and Laurie’s mother’s lifestyle will only complicate a relationship with Booker or any man with whom she will fall in love. Opposites attract but Laurie fears dependency on anyone but herself. The $ex scenes are intimate, graphic, numerous and erotic. We are introduced to Booker’s family including his parents Rebecca and Richard Booker; his sister Kate and her soon to be husband Aaron; Laurie’s best friend Chelsea Wayne (Compromising Her Position 1), and Laurie’s out of control mother Denise Peterson. HARD COMPROMISE is an emotional story line with a heartbreaking heroine, and a hero who never gave up. The premise is intoxicating; the characters are passionate and sultry; the romance is encouraging and provocative. Laurie’s ‘speech’ at Kate and Aaron’s wedding will cause a tear or two to fall.

Laurie and Ethan have danced around each other for 10 years. He busted her at the age of 16 for underage drinking. He told her that she needed to grow up and he would see her in 10 years. 10 years to the day, Ethan attends her New Year's Eve party to stake his claim. Laurie has self-confidence issues and a mother who is a real piece of work. Her mother blackmails her into giving her money to go away and Laurie's business burns down shortly after. She doesn't want to acknowledge to Ethan that her mother was in town, let alone why, so she keeps it to herself. Ethan does not take the discovery of her mother having returned to town the morning she ran out on him well at all. He wants Laurie to trust him, but it easier said than done for her. She holds herself in check in order to protect herself from hurt, or from Ethan getting hurt by associating with her. Her mother tries to screw with her life a few more times during this book and Laurie finally gets the gumption to stand up for herself. I liked how Ethan made Laurie come to some realizations on her own and didn't cave. She needed to come to realize her own self worth. It was nice how she finally owned her true feelings and went after what she wanted.

I've been waiting for the release of the second novel in the Compromise Me series ever since I read Compromising Her Position in November 2015. It's been a year-long wait but bestselling author Samanthe Beck made it more than worthwhile because Hard Compromise was a great follow-up to the series starter! The beginning of Laurie and Ethan's story was a memorable one and hello, once that decade-long embargo was over and done with, talk about making up for lost time. These two were unbelievably hot. I couldn't get enough of them, but I'm not just talking about the steamier scenes. I loved the banter and exchanges these two had going on. Their relationship was a long time coming so there was nothing instant or sudden about it. We get to see how it evolves the more they spend time together. Ethan and Laurie's story wasn't just about them accepting the other but also accepting themselves. Laurie was a self-sufficient woman who liked to stay in control of her world and not be reliant on anyone. Even when circumstances force her to accept help, she makes sure that it isn't an act of charity. Her manipulative mother was someone I wish she could have turned her back on more easily, but Laurie was truly a good person that even after everything her mother had done, she simply couldn't say no to her--which was, of course, rather frustrating after a time. And then there was Ethan who was just...goodness...super le sigh. The guy was a cut above the rest. He saw who Laurie was and loved and accepted her wholeheartedly. He was this genuinely loyal and loving guy who would go above and beyond for those who meant the most to him. I wonder if Santa would give me my own Ethan Booker this Christmas...but I'll make do with reading about him in Hard Compromise. Five stars! ♥

Hard Compromise By: Samantha Beck 5 star review by Kristie K. A five star sexy read, with soft edges and hard lines…Samanthe Beck never fails to satisfy. Laurie Peterson doesn’t open herself up to anyone…well, except for her best friend Chelsea. Growing up with a hot mess for a mother, Laurie decided a long time ago that she would depend on no-one and always stand on her own two feet. Following her dreams, she opens her own bakery and finally feels like she might be climbing out from under the shadow of her unfortunate family tree. On New Year’s Eve, things get slightly complicated when the man she’s fantasized about for ten years shows up at her apartment, and won’t settle for just one night in her bed. After the most amazing night of her life, Laurie’s world crumbles around her when her beloved bakery burns to the ground, and even more complications arise. The man she’s always wanted proposes a solution, but Laurie isn’t sure if she can take what he’s offering. Ethan Booker grew up privileged, but worked every day for the badge on his uniform, and the respect of the department he now runs as Sheriff of Montenido, California. Determined to build his life the way he wants, and out from under the blinding spotlight of his wealthy family, he doesn’t rely on the connections it affords but on his own hard work and merit. More than that, he has no interest in the women his family wants him to meet…he’s had his eye on a certain sweet treat for the last ten years. Ever since the day he escorted her home from a party as a rookie deputy, Ethan has watched out for little Laurie Peterson…and he’s ready to have more than just her back. Choosing to make his move on New Year’s Eve, he spends the night of his life in the arms of the girl he’s wanted for ten years. When her world implodes, and she falls back on years of self reliance, he proposes a solution, hoping to offer his help without her pride interfering. When she accepts his deal, Ethan walks a fine line as he tries to show her how good a real relationship could be. I absolutely adore Samanthe Beck, and every single story she puts out reels me in and holds me hostage until the last page is read. Hard Compromise was no exception. As always, the storyline was flawless, and well written, and though some of the twists were slightly predictable, it didn’t take away from the story at all. Any reader that is a fan of insanely hot, steamy relationships, with a touch of turmoil and a lot of sweetness, will devour this book and love every moment of it. With a guaranteed HEA, and so much in between, Hard Compromise is a must read for any fan of Ms. Beck’s brand of romance. Laurie was relatable in so many ways, with a broken past that makes you want to love her…but a strength that makes you step back and admire her too. She demands respect on the outside, while her insecurities and fears make her insides quiver. Ethan is every bit the strong, protective, dominant male that I can never get enough of. More than just a pretty face, and a hot body, his desire to care for and love Laurie sets the butterflies all aflutter. A true hero in his own right, Ethan does everything he can to prove himself to Laurie, and to earn her trust. A man’s man, but the man every woman wants. There is no compromise to be made here, Ms. Beck has delivered another epic story of hope, desire, and love. Kristie K.

"Hard Compromise" by Samantha Beck is book number two in the "Compromise Me" series. This is Laurie (Lauralie) Peterson and Sheriff Ethan Booker's story. Ethan and Laurie come from extremely different backgrounds. Ethan comes from a very wealthy family. He has chosen to work in law enforcement instead of a desk job with his dad. No matter how hard Laurie works her past seems to bite her in the butt every time. Laurie has had a rough life and Ethan has been keeping an eye on her for ten years. There was just something about Laurie that got to him over the years. He wants a relationship with her not just a one night stand. This story is an emotional and extremely steamy romance with depth. Ethan's character was just amazing. Will he be able to get through to Laurie that she is a wonderful person and deserves happiness? Can he get Laurie to see his love for her and that she fits perfectly into his life? Curl up and be prepared for a wild ride because when it involves Ethan and Laurie it's never boring. FYI, includes mature content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Patience What a fabulously intriguing story of patients and endurance. The heart knows what it wants! Waiting 10 years is extreme, but it needed to be done. Some people hide not only from others, but most damagingly themselves before they find the truth and comfort of love. Booker had his sights set on Laurelie from the get go, but being older he knew he couldn’t act upon the feelings she evoked within him. So telling her they could revisit that issue in 10 years was his way to bide some time, but then he had to convince her! New Year’s Eve 10 years later, he marches into her apartment and takes what he’s wanted all along, HER!!! Unfortunately as usual her mother arrives back into town and throws a cold shower on her good feelings. Booker tries to convince Laurelie that he’s there for her and she can lean on him, but that’s not her. She stands up for herself and leans on no one…. Does Booker finally convince her that it doesn’t matter that their backgrounds (his parents money and her extreme lack of money as well as her low life mothers reputation) are completely opposite, love has no bounds. The heart sees what it wants and goes after it. Or does Laurelie stick with her fears and blow away her chance at happiness? You’ll have to read HARD COMPROMISE to find out. I love the completeness these two seemed to make together throughout the story. This was my first Samanthe Beck story, but I look forward to reading more like this one. I received an ARC via Tasty Book Tours & Entangled Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Due to explicit sexual content this novel is for readers 18 and older.

Hard Compromise is a count your blessings story. A reminder that not everyone has it easy materially or emotionally. Ms. Beck told a tale of strength with a sensual vulnerability that is not found in many romances. Sassy and sexy Laurie is a tough girl with an uninhibited personality but her exterior hides painful insecurities that have haunted her since childhood. I don't get angry often but Laurie's mother had me seeing red. Neglectful, hateful, manipulative and mean spirited user are polite ways of describing a person like her, but I have a ton of less polite ones. The contrast in upbringing, social class and outside forces may have proved a stumbling block for Laurie but Ethan was made of stronger stock. He saw her worth even if she didn't and that's the greater gift of all. Having someone lift you up in the darkest moments. Keep tissues handy.

Rated 4.5 Stars I don't know how she does it but Samanthe Beck has a knack for making nicknames that shouldn't be endearing, endearing take for instance Booker's nickname for Laurie, jailbait every time he used it I got little flutters in my tummy. I enjoyed this book. I loved going on this journey with this couple and can't wait to read the next in the series. ARC provided by author in exchange for a honest review

hard compromise is the companion book to compromising her position, in fact many of the events in both novels overlap with one another, which is why it is so surprising that they are publishing nearly a year apart. but no matter, luckily for me i didn't find out about the series until now and i read the books in the opposite order. and while reading this one first spoils some of the events that take place in compromising her position it's still not a big deal. and both books work perfectly well as standalones. hard compromise tells lauralie peterson's story. she is chelsea's best friend, and her childhood left her with a lot of baggage. her mother was emotionally abusive, neglectful, and criminally indifferent to laurie's emotions. she first meets ethan booker when she is 16 and being busted for underage drinking. she'd gone to a college party with the intention of losing her virginity and booker stops her cold. he also turns her down when she propositions him. telling her then that they would revisit the matter in 10 years. and since it's been 10 years, and ethan hasn't forgotten the original proposition, he takes steps to revisit the matter. the chemistry between these two leads is off the charts. but laurie has so many hang-ups about her past, about how she comes from nothing and ethan was born with a silver spoon. so it takes some convincing. he gets her to agree to a fake relationship with the hope that he can convince her to let down her guard and let him in, let him love her, let herself love him. it's not easy for booker, but it does work. eventually. and their ups and downs make the whole thing worthwhile. when they finally figure it out, it's worth the wait. here's hoping that the next installment in this series gives us arden st. sebastian's story. she's served as a decoy in both compromising her position and hard compromise and i think it's her turn now. **hard compromise will publish on november 21, 2016. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/entangled publishing (brazen) in exchange for my honest review.

I'm a huge fan of Samanthe Beck. She writes an amazing story and this one is no exception. I loved this story. It opens with a 16 year old Laurie, out on her own drinking at the beach party with college students, trying hard to loose her V card on New Years Eve and she hooks a live one. That is until the local Sheriff and his deputy Ethan Booker show up to break up the party and bust the guys chops and Ethan takes Laurie home with a stern lecture about being safe and she's only 16 and of course her mother is no where around. This story in part is the Bookers who are wealthy and have it all and Laurie is the girl from absolutely nothing. Raising herself, her mother a drunk among other things. We fast forward 10 years, Laurie owns a successful bakery in town. She loves to bake, business is booming and it's New Years Eve, Booker decides to make his move after watching her for 10 long years. He's now Sheriff and he does work for a living. He's out with his brother in law to be and makes a plan to carefully disrupt Laurie's New Years Eve party and start the New Year out right with her. Trouble is Ethan wants it all, Laurie is known for her no strings. She knows vulnerable, vulnerable is too risky and will get you hurt or worse. Ethan and Laurie are finally alone. Things escalate and oh good grief, I had to fan the steam off the pages. Laurie has a no bed rule which Ethan breaks, Ethan knows her so well and that bothers Laurie that he's so perceptive. They end up spending the night together, another rule she has. (Lots of rules this one) and then of course after a long absence her mother shows up drunk, threatening Laurie. As always she wants money. Laurie does her best to deter her, but finally caves and takes her to her bakery, cleans out her safe and takes her to the bus station with the promise she won't return. All the while Ethan is asleep in her bed, until he wakes up and finds her gone and the note she left. Within the hour an alarm goes out, there's a fire, Ethan is called and it' s Laurie's bakery. Everything she worked for is gone. And now she has no money. Ethan makes her a deal. One that it wasn't real happy about because unlike the rest of their communication, Ethan isn't exactly clear on what he's doing and why. Nonetheless, it serves a purpose, Laurie agrees to be his date for his sisters wedding festivities and he'll pay her. Not something she's comfortable with but she's doing it. She has to. She's in the hole, her insurance is in limbo and she needs to start her business back asap. She and Booker are from two different worlds and Laurie points that out a lot. Booker seems to take it in stride until he doesn't. His family embraces her, his Mother loves her and she comes to Laurie with a little advice. I melted a couple times during this story. Ethan is what every girl needs. Laurie could be anyone with a dysfunctional family. I loved book 1, book 2 I think tops it. This is a great story about the past meeting the present. Add in lots of steam and sass and you've got a great story. Great story Samanthe!! I definitely recommend this one. *arc from Net Galley and Entangled** in exchange for a fair review.

Another sexy installment in the Compromise Me series! Laurie and Ethan have had ten years in which to build the anticipation and their first time together is HOT! He has patiently waiting for the time to make his move, and one night will not be enough for him. But Laurie doesn't do relationships, so when the opportunity to have her pretend to be his girlfriend arises, he jumps at it. It may be pretend for her, but it's always been real for him. I loved seeing Ethan start to bring down some of Laurie's walls until she really lets him in. Ethan's family is great and his mom was an unexpected surprise. I've really enjoyed the series so far and am eagerly awaiting more! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.
