Emily and Brett fall in love and have a whirlwind romance but when Brett, a bomb specialist in the Army, gets his deployment orders, they agree to break up. While Brett is overseas, Emily discovers she’s pregnant. She wants to tell Brett the news but is conflicted. Being a single mom is more challenging than she ever thought possible, but she takes on the responsibility. When Brett returns home a few years later and discovers he’s a father, will he turn his back on his son and mother to his child? Brett, now home from his deployment and suffering from PTSD, doesn’t know if he can trust Emily fully. She kept her pregnancy from him and while he still loves her, he keeps her at an emotional distance. He loves his son, Tyler, and would do anything to protect him. When Tyler’s imaginary friend turns out to be an actual ghost, Brett will have to slay his own internal demons or risk losing Emily forever. While this is a good second-chance romance, it’s a fantastic ghost story. I found Emily and Brett’s relationship an emotional roller coaster and at times a little over the top. Brett’s got trust issues and I get that, but he loves Emily and their child, doesn’t he? Then he needs to trust in his love and stop punishing Emily. My favorite sub-plot in Haunted Souls is the ghost story. Who is this imaginary friend of Tyler’s and what does he want? Is he malevolent or is he just looking for his family? Beautifully-written suspense by Kathryn Knight had me clinging to my tablet, wondering what would happen next. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Haunted Souls. Knight is a brilliant storyteller with a gift for creating realistic characters and events. I look forward to reading more from her. Highly recommend! My Rating: 4.5 stars

Reviewed by Robin Goodfellow for Readers' Favorite Haunted Souls by Kathryn Knight is a tale about forgiving and loving yourself, despite the guilt that weighs you down. Emily Shea had just introduced Sergeant Brett Leeds to their young son, Tyler. The two haven’t seen each other in four years, and already the shock of parenthood begins to weigh upon Brett. While his parents are struggling with their tense relationship, as well as their lust for one another, Tyler, meanwhile, befriends an unknown entity named Josiah. With a past that won’t leave them alone, and an uncertain future at stake, Emily and Brett must work together to ensure the safety of their son, even if it means putting up with each other. Knight weaves a Gothic story about a couple that picks up the pieces of their past, and learns that, even with the harsh realities in the world, they can still find refuge in each other. To be honest, Brett irritated me quite a bit. Emily did everything she could to contact him, but he still blamed her. Even so, he does demonstrate a certain protectiveness towards her, and it’s clear that he still has feelings for her, no matter what he says. My attitude towards him changed when I finally realized the hell he’d gone through. Though his relationship with Emily and Tyler are slowly blossoming, he still has to deal with the nightmares he has, with Death carefully shrouding him in dark delusions. Then there’s Emily, who struggled with both her guilt and her worry over Tyler. Again and again, these characters show that, despite everything that’s happened, family is still family. Even if you’re separated by time, or memories, or even death, family is always going to be there for you. This idea of family is an overarching concept of the book. Emily and Brett were still able to find one another, though there is a lifetime of sorrow between the two. A parent’s love for their child, friendship, and even romantic love are all interwoven within the words. Knight explores all aspects of that mysterious force, and shows that love is truly timeless. From the characters to the theme of love, Knight creates a dark, yet tender world that will leave the reader breathless.

I really enjoyed the book but I didn't like that everything was the woman's fault. Plus, a little too much sex. This book is for adults.

Emily is a single mom and the man who's the father of her son is back and stationed in his hometown, also where she currently lives. Her son is sensitive only until they visit a haunted jail she doesn't realize HOW sensitive. Brett is back after a tragedy overseas with his EOD crew and he's shocked and angry to find he's had a son and had no clue. I enjoyed this unique romance with paranormal elements. Emily's son, Tyler is fun and a great character for being the medium between their ghost and Emily. Brett and Emily's love story is explosive and entrancing from the current events to the bits of flashbacks throughout the story. Though they both feel they have to be forgiven for past events in their respective but separate years they both yearn for redemption and forgiveness. If you're looking for an enchanting romance that's so sexy it will have you running to the closest cooling source then I highly recommend Haunted Souls!

I am a fan of Kathryn Knight’s other books. Each one I have read, devoured, and loved. Haunted Souls is the same way. I received the book, started it, and could not put it down. I felt like there was a bonus story in this book. The story of Tyler and his ghost friend, Josiah, was the main story with the bonus of Emily and Brett’s love story. The ghost story gave me goose bumps so many times. I could not imagine being in Emily’s shoes watching her 4 year old son interact with a person only he could see. Yet, Emily never doubted Josiah’s existence. Josiah did not directly interact with Emily but he did let her know he was there, many times. With each of these times I reacted in fear for Tyler and awe of how calm Emily managed to stay. I believe I would have acted more like Brett. The disbelief of what his son was saying and being unsure how to react. I am thankful that Tyler had his mom to protect him, believe him, and help him get Josiah back to his mother. Emily and Brett’s story was not unique in that a soldier comes home on break. Girl gets pregnant and soldier goes back to war. The difference is how Emily handled it. Instead of freaking out, she did what she had to do to keep her baby safe. The choices she made were not easy. I admired how she became a single mom, struggling, yet never giving up. I also admired how she handled Brett’s coming home and finding out about Tyler. She didn’t place blame, in fact she shouldered more blame that she should have. She trusted that Brett would be able to step into their life and put Tyler’s happiness first. Brett did not disappoint either. He became the man that both Emily and Tyler needed. Kathryn Knight wrote their love story in very real terms. It was not instant fall back into a relationship. There were trust issues to deal with, histories to come to terms with, and a friendship to reestablish. The attraction was still there, but both knew they needed more to become a family. I certainly recommend checking out Haunted Souls.

This is a second chance romance with a ghostly challenge! After a seriously hot fortnight affair, Emily Shea and Brett Leeds knew they would both go their separate ways - Emily to study to become a vet whilst Brett going to training in the military. What neither had anticipated was that Emily would become pregnant and give birth to their son, Tyler. Four years after they last met, Brett returns to his hometown where she lives and now Emily is going to inform him of his son's existence . . . . Brett is determined to get to know his son, resenting the four years he has missed knowing about him but also starting to understand why. However there are other, possibly more worrying, concerns - like Tyler's new ghostly friend who has moved into the family home with Tyler and just what is wrong with the mother of Tyler's best friend from 'school'? This is an enthralling story with so many threads interwoven in it making a complex but highly engaging story. The struggles of being a single Mum, the stresses of witnessing the death and injury of close friends whilst on military duty, the drama of their new joint parenthood, abusive relationships and the impact of a twelve year old ghost haunting a child all intertwine to make this superb story I have no hesitation in highly recommending. With well crafted characters, packed with angst, turmoil, danger and romance, I am so happy the author invited me to read this captivating novel - I'll certainly be looking out for other novels by her in future! Many thanks to the author for gifting me a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
