Ryland and Fallon's story is full of intrigue and adventure. I love the book but hated leaving it hanging in suspence at the end. I can't wait for the next book.

Reviewed by Melinda Hills for Readers' Favorite Rylan Arnett has survived another battle with his clan’s greatest enemy, but the danger isn’t over yet. Although severely injured, Rylan manages to escape a group of English soldiers searching for him and ends up hiding behind the shed on a meager farmstead. Heart of the Highlands: The Wolf follows Rylan’s adventures that only heat up after meeting Fallon Montgomery, the young woman who owns the farm. Alone with her young son and an old man, Fallon is at the mercy of the local English lord, who has his own plans for her. When Rylan comes out of hiding after the English unit leaves, Fallon’s first instinct is to fight, but she sees that Rylan is hurt and decides to take care of him. This is the beginning of a convoluted tale that is Book 2 in the Protectors of the Crown Series by April Holthaus. Unanswered questions, years of secrets, and political intrigue keep the characters moving like pieces on a chess board as Scottish clans and the King of England play out their desires, using all those around them as mere pawns. Well-described settings, realistic characters, and a subtle yet steady rise of passion combine to make Heart of the Highlands: The Wolf by April Holthaus an exciting story. Never knowing who is on which side maintains tension and some revelations come as tremendous surprises. With a large cast of characters, it may be better to read the Protectors of the Crown Series in order, but Heart of the Highlands: The Wolf is still an excellent story, especially as the heat between Fallon and Rylan eventually explodes to their mutual satisfaction.

"The Protectors of the Crown This series follows a group of five warriors who live their life protecting their king and country. The historical setting is Scotland 1537-1538 during the reign of James V of Scotland." Heart of the Highlands: The Wolf (Protectors of the Crown Book 2) by April Holthaus is an enticing and very enjoyable Medeival Scottish Romance. While, Book 2 in her amazing "Heart of the Highlands" series, it can be read as a stand alone with no issues. See Book 1,"The Beast". Fallon and Rylan, aka the Wolf, face turmoil, danger and their attraction to each other as they come to grip with their circumstances. Rylan is one of a secret group, of Protectors of the Crown. He is also considered an outlaw. He and Fallon have secrets of their own. Fallon and her young son, are not what they same. Ms. Holthaus had me captivated with the first page and held me entranced and in awe the whole way through, to the last page. Highly intoxicating! Well written, fast paced with engaging and well-developed characters, who will hold your heart and your attention, as you watch them grow. Sparks fly, passion ignites, danger lurks, as the Protectors of the Crown do their best for King and country. But will Fallon and Rylan face their demons, come to grips with their past to find their HEA? Or will they lose all to the danger that lurks? You must read "The Wolf" to learn more of Fallon and Rylan's story! Filled with intrigue, suspense, mystery, and romance. Of course, I adore small children thrown into the mix, they make life so enduring. A mother will do anything for her child. Ms. Holthaus is an incredible author, who draws readers into her stories with her captivating storyline, and her enticing characters. "The Wolf" is a definite keeper, a story not to be missed.
